I'm currently looking for a holiday so of course I'm reading trip adviser reviews.

I can't believe how many people leave poor reviews over the stupidest of things.

Quite a lot will leave bad reviews when they haven't even stayed at the place, but they've taken the hump because it was fully booked or a tour operator mixed up the bookings.

Or complaining about the weather, as if that's the hotels fault.

One that made me cry with laughter was the one who complained that no one spoke English well - in Spain.

Another left a hotel one star because they tv remote was faulty and they could hear someone from the kitchen putting the recycling out throughout the day. Apparently everything else was great, but they felt those two minor complaints warranted a terrible review.

The most bizzare one I read was a review of a hotel we have stayed in several times when the dc were young. It is a family hotel which prides itself on catering for families. They don't hide the fact that they run a busy children's club every day. Well one guest took exception to this and wrote that his holiday was ruined by the announcement that the children 's club was about to start every day. He also took a dislike to the "gay boy" who ran the entertainment programme!!!

I love one star reviews. I always read them to see if the thing people are complaining about is something that bothers me. And some of the stories are genuinely hilarious to read.

It really pisses me off when you look at the traveller’s photos and they have a whole bunch of someone’s holiday snaps. Great Bev, a selfie of you trout pouting in Trafalgar Square really helps me decide if I want to visit that hotel. 🙄

Waiter asked if everything was ok during the meal, they smiled, said yes

This means nothing. Often this is done barely before you start eating. If there is something totally wrong with my food that it’s completely inedible I will mention it but mostly they get a curt nod as this practice really pisses me off, and designed purely so if you have a later complaint, smug managers can say “but we asked and you said it was ok” rather than a genuine care about customer satisfaction. I find it’s only the cheaper places who do this. More expensive restaurants staff are more discreet than that.

I’ve waited so long for food and have no other option than to eat a substandard meal because I’m hungry and have things to do. If it’s only my meal that’s crap, I don’t want to sit watching everyone eat then have them watch me when mine turns up 20 minutes later. I will always tell them the food is crap if it is crap and will tell others too. Sadly managers seem to think I’m after a comp, when actually, I couldn’t care about getting my tenner back, I just want them to stop ripping people off by serving sub standard food.

@KenDoddsDadsDog I didn't know he went to prison for GBH! I am not at all surprised to find that he isn't a nice person in real life as well as behind the keyboard though...

alansleftfoot · 03/01/2019 15:05

'We thought we were going to Majorca, but they took us to Mallorca - never heard of it'.
Hmm

floribunda18 · 03/01/2019 15:05

Is that the actual guy who went to prison?

When people do 1* reviews, the CAPS LOCK goes on.

sulflower · 03/01/2019 15:06

When we are research holiday hotels I always start with the 1 star reviews. For a hotel in Langkawi we are considering there was this little gem:

"My main concern would be, that at such high costs I should also be able to swim in an ocean water, that doesn't pose a potential threat to my life, because even box jellyfish aren't uncommon in these waters"

SneakyGremlins · 03/01/2019 15:07

@PortiaCastis

Complaining about the tide? Grin

WhatsUpHun · 03/01/2019 15:13

@Dorris83
It's a great read though. www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g209968-d1026156-Reviews-The_Peacock_Bakewell-Bakewell_Peak_District_National_Park_England.html

Owner sounds like a right dickhead

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

If ever I could'nt wait for a review, this was it !!!

First of all I would like to thank you for choosing to review the Peacock Inn as your first establishment review, unfortunately celena2018 it is nothing but a pack of over exagerated lies. Nonetheless welcome to the fabricated world that is Tripadvisor.

TO START, I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT THAT IRONICALLY THE TWO REVIEWS ABOVE YOUR DRIBBLE ARE THE SAME ROOM THAT YOU OCCUPIED !! WHAT A FOOL YOU LOOK NOW!! "

ajandjjmum · 03/01/2019 15:17

As a PP said, TA can be useful if you use it wisely - ie. don't take any notice of the reviewers with one or two reviews to their name.

happystory · 03/01/2019 15:18

I've recently read a 1* review of a city centre restaurant because they couldn't find anywhere to park.....

FreezerBird · 03/01/2019 15:19

This is my absolute top favourite review of a local b&b. It has consistently awful reviews but this one is so barking.

TheFairyCaravan · 03/01/2019 15:21

Reviews that get my goat are the ones where people moan about their flights being delayed and only getting a bottle of water and a dry cheese sandwich and yet somehow that's the hotel's fault so they give them 1*. There's a whole section for airline reviews you fuckwits.

Enko · 03/01/2019 15:22

review about a local pub and mentioned how unfriendly it had been. (long story) It was by far the first to have commented that children were not made welcome.

response from another reviewer " obviously the ones who claims that they are child unfriendly have poorly behaved children as we have never had a problem with our child..."

err yes clearly everyone else is unable to raise a child to behave ...

Timmytoo · 03/01/2019 15:25

I really wanted to visit a restaurant in London when I lived there to experience the BAD service for a laugh. Apparently the female manager kept shouting "TOILET THERE". Refusing to give service and shouted ALOT. There were tons of those reviews and from people who went there just for the "experience " and reporting back 😂

XingMing · 03/01/2019 15:26

DS loves reading reviews of the place he works; he divides them between pre and post his arrival there. He was delighted to report that his services' reviews are on the up.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/01/2019 15:26

Mallorca is gorgeous, that Majorca though, total shit, the water don't taste like it oughta.

TooManyPaws · 03/01/2019 15:27

The ones received by tourist information can also be mind-boggling. Edinburgh got a complaint that the Castle was built too near to the shops.

tillytrotter1 · 03/01/2019 15:30

We once saw a review of a very nice cafe/bat we use a lot in Norwich, it talked out scruffy dated flock wallpaper and dirty carpets. It was quite clearly the pub next door, which indeed looks scruffy and outdated.

Our daughter used to manage a small guest house in Edinburgh and the expectations there were outrageous, no-one to carry bags, no ice machines, no complimentary shuttle to/from the airport and she was unable to magic-up tickets for the Tattoo for that Saturday night!

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/01/2019 15:31

TheFairyCaravan
I know this gorgeous, stylish hotel on a Med island.Wink

MrsJayy · 03/01/2019 15:31

I love it is a bit too Spainish reveiws well yes you are in spain you numpty Grin the best review i read for our resort was caters to Russians Confused

SneakyGremlins · 03/01/2019 15:38

@MrsJayy I think some people don't realise THEY are the foreigners Grin

abacucat · 03/01/2019 15:47

TillyTrotter I suspect that was americans? I think one of the issues is that in some parts of America, B&Bs and guesthouses is the name for a very posh establishment. So I think this leads to unreaistic expectations when coming to Britain.

MrsJayy · 03/01/2019 15:49

sneakygremlins you are right they forget Benidorm isn't actually the Uk Grin
