To tell these smokers on the next sunbed to not smoke

Loveweekends10 · 02/01/2019 14:24

Have been relaxing on my sunbed ( on holiday abroad). Couple just arrived. Sat down on next sunbed and have been chain smoking since. Im asthmatic- do I tell them? Or do I move? Why do they think this is ok when all the public health warnings tell them it’s not?

Just move

As an aside I just went to a resort where smoking was not allowed in the public outside areas too - a good idea

MarshaBradyo · 03/01/2019 06:47

Not that I’ve encountered it much without that (or maybe more places do I just didn’t see their notice on it)

AGHHHH · 03/01/2019 06:48

I thought this ^^ was referring to cigarette smoke AGHHHH. Did you mean to be so rude?

Oh, then I completely misunderstood your comment and thought you were being a passive aggressive smoker mocking my sense of smell! Sorry Blush

LoniceraJaponica · 03/01/2019 06:51

Apology accepted. My parents were very heavy smokers (it killed both of them as well). I hate the smell of cigarette smoke.

NashvilleQueen · 03/01/2019 06:57

Non-smoker here and I don’t personally enjoy the smell of cigarettes myself. That said the language on this thread towards smokers is appalling and rude. I would accept that outside is pretty much the only place they can go to smoke and move if I found it to be spoiling my day. The vitriol is unnecessary.

AGHHHH · 03/01/2019 06:59

Me too, I came home early from a relatives at Christmas because they chain smoked constantly and wouldn't open a window despite knowing it really bothers me. I tried to stay upstairs out of the way but they kept shouting up at me questioning my whereabouts. If I dare mention it's because of the smoke they instantly turn defensive and shout at me and say go then if you don't like it. So I did 😁

People tell me I stink when I've been there and despite keeping my coat upstairs, still stank after.

Yes, that's really funny how smokers think they can smoke when there is no signage ordering them not to.
Yes by all means you sanctimonious non smokers sit outside trying to eat amongst the traffic belching out obnoxious carcinogenic fumes.
Then complain about the smokers

AGHHHH · 03/01/2019 07:13

It's not sanctimonious. There being traffic is a poor argument.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 03/01/2019 07:15

Meh, its a non issue, just move if you dont like it, smokers are allowed to smoke as long as its outside, not really breaking news considering they banned people from smoking inside over a decade ago!

Smoking will never be banned, and if you think it will how naive you are.

onlylonely · 03/01/2019 07:16

The amount of tax smokers pay is huge. It more than covers the whole NHS doesnt it? Let’s be grateful to them for that at least.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/01/2019 07:16

"Yes by all means you sanctimonious non smokers sit outside trying to eat amongst the traffic belching out obnoxious carcinogenic fumes."

The point that you seem to be spectacularly missing is that traffic fumes are a lot less noticeable than cigarette smoke.

And I don't eat outside on busy streets anyway.

And disliking cigarette smoke is not being sanctimonious Hmm. I hate the smell of parsnips. Does that make me sanctimonious?

The entire world does not recolve [sic] around you. - @knittedjest
It doesn't revolve around the smokers either, but you can bet they wold act more entitled then the non-smokers.

What is it with non smokers who make pathetic sweeping generalisations? - @SillySallySingsSongs.
Do you see what you did there? [hint, sweeping generalisation]

MarshaBradyo · 03/01/2019 07:26

Are you next to the pool? There might be a no smoking near pool sign somewhere

Bellatrix14 · 03/01/2019 07:29

I don’t know where you are on holiday, but depending on the country you’re in (and where the smokers are from) you might look far ruder asking them to move.

I studied abroad for a year and went to a barbecue on the second or third night to get to know people. I was sat eating (long trestle tables like Hogwarts) with another girl from the UK when two girls from a different country (ie not the UK, or the country we were in) who we knew vaguely came and sat down in the seats next to us, said hello, and started smoking strong cigarettes as we were eating.

I was not massively impressed, but culturally for them it was not considered rude/odd to smoke next to someone who was eating without checking whether it was OK first.

Your sunbed smokers might have very different attitudes to you!

Aragog · 03/01/2019 07:54

I think you just have to move yourself. Unless it's actually banned in the area there's no other solution. Sadly it's their right to smoke and breathe the toxic fumes over other people.

We are abroad at present and smoking seems to be more prevalent than at home. As the weathers nice it is good to be able to sit outside to have a drink or eat. However before doing so I really have to have a good look around. I can't eat and drink with the smell of cigarette fumes next to me. It spoils my meal in a way that other smells, such as the persons food next to me, don't. And a lot of places here don't have that much room inside either.

It's the same as I wouldn't choose to sit right next to a busy road with choking petrol or diesel fumes either.

I do think it should be banned in more places, or have clearer distinctions between smoking and non smoking sizes, even more so in areas where food is served. It's just common courtesy really. But I guess people who do smoke probably don't smell how bad it is for those around them, or how much their own clothes and hair smell of the smoke too.

user1471426142 · 03/01/2019 07:57

I agree it’s vile but sadly you will probably have to move. It’s one thing I look at carefully now re holidays as it is more culturally acceptable in lots of places. There needs to be better segregation of smoking and non smoking areas so the smokers can enjoy their holiday and the non-smokers the same.

Sadly a lot of smokers are inconsiderate. Last time I was at my hospital there were about 20 people clustered around a 2m high no smoking sign blocking the path into the main building. When I took my newborn home last time, I had to walk through lots of puffs of smoke as people were lining the route to the car park. It is behaviour like that that makes people say smokers are selfish.

SoloD · 03/01/2019 07:57

You may have to move, but they most likely will spend their last few years having to drag around a bottle of oxygen around with them as they fight for every last breath. Not a nice way to go...

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 03/01/2019 07:57

I understand some people dont smoke
'Some' as in almost everyone.

Can you link the evidence to this?... because I will think opinion does not equal fact

Currently on average in the UK 6.1 million people still smoke ...

Across the world, the percentage is 20% of the global population, and thats just counting those who smoke everyday, not your stress, or social smokers....

Racecardriver · 03/01/2019 07:59

Move while glaring pointedly. Smoking is very antisocial

SoloD · 03/01/2019 08:06

@onlylonely

It covers the cost of smoking-related diseases but probably not the other illnesses, contributed to by smoking and the other social harm caused by tobacco (cleaning up cigarette butts, time off work for smokers due to illness, additional breaks etc).

Where the NHS does win is that smokers tend to die much earlier so reduce long-term care costs and don't take their state pension for so long.

So it may even out over time.

TheStoic · 03/01/2019 08:10

This is so annoying. I’m at a resort now where there is no smoking allowed in the pool area.

So one woman slips outside the fence, smokes there - with all her smoke blowing back over the fence - then comes back in when she’s finished. Dozy mare.

Jaxtellerswife · 03/01/2019 08:14

@TheStoic she's not a dozy mare, she obeying the rules, surely?

TheStoic · 03/01/2019 08:19

Yet not understanding the purpose of them. Only a complete thicko would not understand that. Or an asshole who doesn’t care.

Perhaps the sign should say No Smoke in the Pool Area. Although as a smoker, she’s clearly not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Lizzie48 · 03/01/2019 08:51

@redredrobins

One of the reasons why the smoking bans was introduced was to protect the bar staff from having to breathe in the fumes from the smokers. Yes, it's a private pub and punters can choose to go elsewhere, but for the pub to stay open there have to be some people who work there and who have to breathe in second hand fumes, so that you can enjoy going to your local to drink and have a fag.
