To not take DS to the hospital?

challengethethought · 01/01/2019 22:09

I posted on a Mum page (Facebook) asking what I could give one year old DS to comfort him. By that I mean things like home remedies for soothing, like honey and lemon.

He woke up about an hour ago, crying like mad with a barking cough and loud chest. Finally got him to sleep and he's wheezing and making odd grunts.

NHS advice online is just to keep an eye and don't worry. Most likely Croup by the sounds of it, not serious unless he appears to be struggling for breaths.

I've been hounded by mums on the FB page to take him to A&E! Literally every one of them. Someone's even said "Take him to A&E for fuck sake, NEVER play with a child's life!"

AIBU to not take him? Sad

Q But NHS advice is not to Confused

Are we just suppose to ignore it?

I think you know him best so would take him if you felt it needed it.

Not what you wanted but if it is croup, wrap him up and take him outside. Apparently cold air can help. Both of my daughters suffer with it occasionally and it sounds horrific but they’re generally otherwise well with it. Hope he’s better soon.

justforthisnow · 01/01/2019 22:11

You lost me at "home remedies" and "odd grunts".
Bring him to a doctor.

Sirzy · 01/01/2019 22:12

Wheeze and grunts in a 1 year old needs checking.

Phone 111 at least. Better safe than sorry

loubluee · 01/01/2019 22:12

Is he up to date with his immunisations?

trudeie · 01/01/2019 22:13

YABU. Wheezing in a baby needs checked ASAP.

kaytee87 · 01/01/2019 22:13

If his breathing sounds odd (wheezing and grunts) then he needs to be seen.

Prop him up and open and window while you phone 111.

JudasPrudy · 01/01/2019 22:13

You don't know that it's croup though, only a doctor can tell you that. I'd take him to OOH, you don't want to take chances with a baby who is struggling to breathe.

beargryllshasabigrope · 01/01/2019 22:14

He's one. He's not a fairly robust 3 year old, or even close. Take the lad to be seen. He'll probably need a short dose of steroids if it's croup. Why prolong his suffering if you can go and get them tonight?

agnurse · 01/01/2019 22:15

If he's grunting that's REALLY not good. He needs to be seen.

Children can compensate for a very long time, but once the work of breathing becomes too hard, they can very quickly stop breathing. Once that happens it's very hard to get them back.

If you bring him in they can treat him. Usually this would involve oral steroids and inhaled epinephrine. (Albuterol/Ventolin doesn't work for croup as croup is an upper airway problem and Ventolin works on lower airways.)

PenApple · 01/01/2019 22:15

Maybe best phoning? As he’s so small they might want to check him.

And I’m not one to rush to doctor etc.

To not take DS to the hospital?
covetingthepreciousthings · 01/01/2019 22:15

I wouldn't take chances with a little one so young wheezing, I've experienced wheezing as an adult and it's not pleasant at all.

At the VERY least I think you need to call 111.

Merryoldgoat · 01/01/2019 22:15

Grunts and wheezing in 1yo I would definitely take to A&E.

Croup can worsen quickly and if you can’t see a doctor quickly go to A&E.

My baby had it and my GP saw him within an hour and said deterioration overnight needs a visit to A&E.

MrsDrudge · 01/01/2019 22:15

Agree with PP - wheezing/croup can occasionally be serious (but treatable). If he was mine I’d at very least call 111

challengethethought · 01/01/2019 22:15

Huge apology, he isn't grunting and hasn't done either. It's a sort of sob sound because he couldn't cough to bring up what sounds like phlegm.

Just looked and listened to loads of grunting noises babies make and he definitely hasn't grunted.

Very chesty though. Currently sounds like one of those summertime nats that make that annoying sound whilst you're trying to sleep

Spieluhr · 01/01/2019 22:15

Take him now. You can't be too careful with a baby and he's wheezing badly. He needs to be checked out. It could be a number of things and even 'just' croup can require treatment.

Aroundthesun · 01/01/2019 22:16

You do need to take him, he may need steroids for the croup. An OOH doctor's appointment would do though if you didn't want A&E.

I had to make many trips with DD when she was wee and croupy. I rang NHS 24 and they always wanted someone to see her.

Luvey · 01/01/2019 22:16

I think trust your own instinct

kaytee87 · 01/01/2019 22:16

I don't understand why you wouldn't just phone 111?

CatToddlerUprising · 01/01/2019 22:17

My daughter sounded like she was just grunting at that age- turned out to be see saw breathing resulting in blue light ambulance on oxygen and nebulisers. Please- as someone who has called an ambulance for my daughter’s breathing multiple times (as directed by her consultants)- take your child to A&E. If I hadn’t taken DD to the GP- she’d be dead.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 01/01/2019 22:17

I would phone 111 and speak to an actual medical professional, they can surely give better advice than randoms on the internet.
Sympathy though, my ds2 had croup a few times as a wee one and it was horrible (he needed steroids at least twice, so another reason to seek medical help).

Alb1 · 01/01/2019 22:18

You need to atleast phone 111 and let them tell you. If your concerned enough to post on 2 websites then phoning 111 really isn't much extra effort and is the best option for your child. I hope he feels better soon Flowers

DanielRicciardosSmile · 01/01/2019 22:18

At that age I'd definitely be ringing NHS direct at the very least. DS was a year old when he had his first bad bout of wheezing and we ended up in hospital via the out of hours GP service with him having his first nebuliser. Diagnosed as asthmatic 2 weeks after his 2nd birthday.

I'm not saying ring 999 or take him to A&E but I'd definitely be seeking medical advice.

Forkrightorf · 01/01/2019 22:18

Sorry OP but I think you should go too. I avoid the GP or OOH wherever possible and treat everything at home if I can but wheezing does need to be looked at I'm afraid. Hope he's better soon.
