To not take DS to the hospital?

I posted on a Mum page (Facebook) asking what I could give one year old DS to comfort him. By that I mean things like home remedies for soothing, like honey and lemon.

He woke up about an hour ago, crying like mad with a barking cough and loud chest. Finally got him to sleep and he's wheezing and making odd grunts.

NHS advice online is just to keep an eye and don't worry. Most likely Croup by the sounds of it, not serious unless he appears to be struggling for breaths.

I've been hounded by mums on the FB page to take him to A&E! Literally every one of them. Someone's even said "Take him to A&E for fuck sake, NEVER play with a child's life!"

AIBU to not take him? Sad

Okay, calling 111. He's not even doing the odd snore now but I'm concerned because someone on here has said that 20/21 resps a minute isn't normal range. So I'm on phone now....

Ironically, he seems very calm and his usual sleeping self. I'm calling because of the breaths per minute thing.

I'll update when I can Thanks

If you have absolute faith in that website, why ask?!

Schuyler · 01/01/2019 22:38

YABU to not phone NHS 111 and let them make an assessment. I would never mess around with a baby and breathing.

brizzledrizzle · 01/01/2019 22:39

Hope he's OK op. glad you are calling them.

Schuyler · 01/01/2019 22:39

Sorry, cross post. All the best and hope he’s ok. Flowers

Crunchymum · 01/01/2019 22:39

Dc1 was in for 3 nights when he was 13 months with viral induced wheeze.

Sent from the GP to A&E (taxi not ambulance) but my child was very ill.

I had made the decision to wait for the GP appt, felt so guilty!!

111 will send you to a&e but I would still call them.

Thehop · 01/01/2019 22:40

Good luck OP

madmum5811 · 01/01/2019 22:40

Have you been drinking tonight and worry that you will be judged by medical professionals?

kalefire · 01/01/2019 22:40

I thought resp rate lowered when asleep anyway?

Still never a bad idea to call 111

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 22:43

Have you been drinking tonight and worry that you will be judged by medical professionals?

WTF is that all about?

Squidgee · 01/01/2019 22:44

croup can be deceptive. my DS had it regularly and his oxygen levels always bombed and he ended up needing nebulisers in A&E.

If it is croup, and he is struggling, one thing that can help (As long as you keep him bundled up) is the cold air outside, so taking him outside for 10-15 minutes can provide some relief (but please be sure its croup and nothing else!)

TeslasTeaCup · 01/01/2019 22:44

Bronchiolitis - look it up. My friend's baby died from it. Chest infection? Pneumonia?

You really should be doing the responsible thing and at least take your baby to see the gp.

SovietKitsch · 01/01/2019 22:44

I know it must feel horrible OP when everyone piles on to tell you YABU, but particularly with a small child you don’t fuck around with breathing difficulties. My nephew was taken in with a grunt - his mum and dad hadn’t been worried and hadn’t hurried there, and he arrested within 30 mins of arriving. If they hadn’t been there, the consequences don’t bear thinking about. A&E NEVER mind seeing a baby with breathing difficulties. I once thought I was overreacting with one of mine and he had pneumonia and was kept in for a week Blush

kissmewherethesundontshine · 01/01/2019 22:44

Glad you are calling 111 OP, hope he is ok Thanks

Mummy2one2016 · 01/01/2019 22:45

My lb had croup at 1. What we thought was an innocent little winter cough which he had seen the Dr for. Ended in our baby waking up weasing and unable to catch his breath. 111 sent an ambulance, scariest thing I've experienced. Thankfully after the steroids he was back to his usual self.

urkidding · 01/01/2019 22:47

My doctor drove me to the hospital when my daughter had it, she was really worried. My daughter had a very high temperature.

Carbsnomarbs · 01/01/2019 22:47

Hope he’s ok!

It’s good to know that there are people out there who don’t waste Drs/A&E etc time but when it comes to children who can’t articulate just what’s going on and are having breathing issues no Dr is going to tell you off for wasting time!

Jenasaurus · 01/01/2019 22:48

my son had these symptoms and was blue lighted from the GP surgery to hospital with hypoxia, he had to stay in 3 days and had steroids etc. he was 2 but he still struggled, don't take the chance

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 01/01/2019 22:48

Please take him to A&E or at least ring 111. My DS had what you’re describing at the same age and was admitted to hospital on oxygen. Take him.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 01/01/2019 22:48

Hope he's ok Flowers

HappybutsometimesGrouchy · 01/01/2019 22:48

Really, he's suddenly much better now? OP, could you sleep soundly tonight knowing your baby has such a bad chest? Personally, I would be unable to sleep with worry. Just call the out of hours ffs. Why on earth take that risk with such a young child Confused

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 01/01/2019 22:49

Sorry, cross post.

Bouncingbelle · 01/01/2019 22:49

Thank god you phoned. It could be bronchiolitis and it could get serious. You cant take chances with babies who cant verbalise how they feel!!! Hope he is ok.

WellBHoise · 01/01/2019 22:49

Well done for calling for advice

HappybutsometimesGrouchy · 01/01/2019 22:50

Apologies OP, didn't see your last post. I'm glad you've called and hope your DS is ok.
