To not take DS to the hospital?

challengethethought · 01/01/2019 22:09

I posted on a Mum page (Facebook) asking what I could give one year old DS to comfort him. By that I mean things like home remedies for soothing, like honey and lemon.

He woke up about an hour ago, crying like mad with a barking cough and loud chest. Finally got him to sleep and he's wheezing and making odd grunts.

NHS advice online is just to keep an eye and don't worry. Most likely Croup by the sounds of it, not serious unless he appears to be struggling for breaths.

I've been hounded by mums on the FB page to take him to A&E! Literally every one of them. Someone's even said "Take him to A&E for fuck sake, NEVER play with a child's life!"

AIBU to not take him? Sad

A 3 year old child at my ds nursery almost died from croup as she stopped breathing. Don't risk it.

Lwmommy · 01/01/2019 22:18

Its the wheezing and bad breathing that give cause for concern?

Have you counted how many respirations he is doing? Watch his chest and stomach and count how many, if its 60 or more a minute he need s medical treatment

Ask 111
That’s what they’re there for

NHS online advice is really for non-urgent advice and info

If older, maybe trust your gut feeling -but 1 year old , hmm, no, also get advice

challengethethought · 01/01/2019 22:19

kay Because NHS info says it's completely fine

I’d take him

DanielRicciardosSmile · 01/01/2019 22:20

Also, friend's DD suffered with croup quite regularly at that age and it usually ended up with her having to see the Doctor.

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/01/2019 22:20

That sounds like my DS when he had bronchiolitis and ended up in hospital very unwell. NHS online is general advice not specific advice for your child. My DS2 ended up in hospital with bronchiolitis and it seems very similar to what you're describing. If he's still like this tomorrow could you take him to an emergency GP appointment at least? And obviously to A&E/out of hours tonight if he worsens.

ChristmasSnow · 01/01/2019 22:20

A baby with any type of breathing problems needs to be seen by a doctor.

What is his resp rate? Count his breathing, one breath is in and out

Do not listen to NHS advice from a website
I waited for a 111 doctor to call back if my partner hadnt taken me to hospital, i would 100% be dead

kaytee87 · 01/01/2019 22:20

If you're so sure op why are you posting here?

WellBHoise · 01/01/2019 22:20

You may not think he needs to go to A&E but if he’s wheezing why would you not at least phone 111 for advice rather than just reading online?

BeardedMum · 01/01/2019 22:20

A&E. Don’t mess around with croup (from experience).

Bluemascara4 · 01/01/2019 22:21

Another vote for 111 . Please call them .

trudeie · 01/01/2019 22:21

It literally says on the NHS website if there's nothing like wheezing. You have said yourself that he's wheezing. Did you read it properly? I'd take him if he's having any trouble at all breathing, I wouldn't associate that with a regular cough, rather than asking if you're being unreasonable not to on MN.

mumof2sarah · 01/01/2019 22:21

Awww OP it's so hard when your children are ill and you don't know how to help them then to get people telling you what to do and being quite rude as well can be daunting. Do what YOU feel is right, or ring the actual nhs direct service. Croup can be an awful thing. My dr always says best thing for that is to sit in a bathroom with a hot shower running to breathe in the steam and to put a pillow under cot mattress to raise them up a bit. If you feel like your child doesn't need to be seen tonight then take it hour by hour and just let him get into a position he's comfy in. Don't take any negativity to heart my lovely I hope your son feels better soon xxx

Sirzy · 01/01/2019 22:22

A website can’t hesr his breathing. It can’t count respiration levels. It can’t check saturation levels.

I don’t know why you asked though given you have now asked it at least two places and been given pretty unanimous advice yet your still determined to ignore it

MyDcAreMarvel · 01/01/2019 22:22

For goodness sake that link does not say your babies symtoms are fine at all! He is wheezing .

ViolaLucyofTirol · 01/01/2019 22:22

When he breathes is it his chest or stomach going in and out? I'm trying to remember what they asked when we had similar- but like pp I called 111 and we ended up being admitted. Drs said to usthey would rather see and discharge rather than a sick child become worse.

Queenofthestress · 01/01/2019 22:22

Fucking hell, 1 year old and wheezing like a summer time gnat means you need to get him seen. Hell, I would take my 5 year old if he was wheezing like that

ChristmasSnow · 01/01/2019 22:22

OP The recent link you have put on is a standard cough, not a baby that is wheezing and struggling

Alb1 · 01/01/2019 22:22

The NHS advice pages (like 111 online) don't apply to children under 5, they advise you to phone 111 instead. Why bother posting and then ignoring everyone?

TokyoSushi · 01/01/2019 22:23

Please call 111 OP

kaytee87 · 01/01/2019 22:24

@mumof2sarah steam isn't advised for croup. Cold, fresh air is.

Op the website states if your baby is having trouble breathing then they must be seen. Wheezing is trouble breathing. Ffs

challengethethought · 01/01/2019 22:24

What is his resp rate? Count his breathing, one breath is in and out

It's 21 resps per minute
