To not understand people that dont eat leftovers?

I've seen a lot of people say this, and wondered why? What could eating leftovers possibly do to you? Is it a fear of poverty in some way?

My sister knew a girl that would roast a chicken for Sunday dinner and only eat the breasts and throw the rest away. To me, that's madness, I'd get at least 2-3 dinners and a soup out of a large chicken.

If you think good in the UK is expensive I implore you to never nip into a supermarket in France!

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:31

*food

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2019 16:31

God yes, I prefer the bubble and squeak to the actual Christmas dinner.

nutellalove · 01/01/2019 16:31

I love leftovers. Hate reheating in the microwave though. It just ruins it. Has to be Hob or oven.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:31

@Nothisispatrick it goes grey when it goes cold (on a pizza anyway)

bunnyup · 01/01/2019 16:31

I find it grotesque to waste food...it's not about money..it just sickens me

I feel the same. With so much angst about recycling and plastic etc how can it sit so easy with people to throw food in the bin when people are starving to death and the planet is being changed forever to accommodate the amount of intensive farming required? Surely people who know they won't touch leftovers should at least try to not make more than they will eat?

Flusteredwintertime · 01/01/2019 16:32

I just don't like eating leftovers, it feels grim to me but that's just my opinion, can't explain it any better than that really. I have no valid reasons like worrying about how to reheat I just don't want to eat left over food.

I make enough food for the amount of people eating so I don't have leftovers (except for maybe scraps on the plate) I don't think it's lazy, I'm cooking properly every night instead of just reheating something from the day before.

My DParents on the other hand love making meals from leftovers and I regularly ate the same meal 3/4 times a week as a child - this is maybe why I dont like it now - just yesterday DM told me they made curries and soup with the leftover Christmas food, they loved it, I gagged at the mere thought of eating food that was cooked a week ago.

We have little food waste because I don't over cook meals and we pretty much devour everything. The only time food gets wasted is if its a takeaway and we've ordered too much, I won't keep it because none of us will eat it the next day.

tilder · 01/01/2019 16:32

Food waste is a massive environmental issue. Food production accounts for about 25% of greenhouse gas emissions. Plus the whole ethics of wasting animal protein.

So yes, i judge food waste.

Plus I don't understand the hygiene argument. If you can be hygienic with uncooked food, you can be hygienic with cooked food. It isn't complicated.

I get we all have hang ups, but food is a basic thing. Plus totally agree much food tastes better second time round. Other dishes need leftovers. Shepherd's pie made with leftover roast lamb is delicious.

bunnyup · 01/01/2019 16:32

Eh? Food waste which is ground up and put into waste water is still food waste.. Unless by "food waste digester" you actually mean "labrador"

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:33

@MacarenaFerreiro no I mean a food waste digester, it's turns all food and even bones etc into compost which I then use in my garden. No food waste at all. Never known a water based one!

Fairylea · 01/01/2019 16:33

I hate leftovers. I don’t want to have the same meal / thing for days on end, even if it’s made into something else. I just find it really off putting.

But I did grow up extremely poor- dinner was often soup and tinned potatoes and we would make a roast dinner last nearly a week (if we could even afford one!) so maybe some of it comes from that.

OlennasWimple · 01/01/2019 16:35

Surely one of the best things about cooking a big meal like Christmas dinner is having left overs for a couple of days that mean that there's no need to cook or it's very easy cooking?

MilkManiaMama · 01/01/2019 16:35

We eat leftovers every other day at least. My 11 month old daughter eats tons of leftovers and I'm not over cautious about what I save or how I store it. I regularly eat leftover rice reheated and I often leave it in a pan on the hob and reheat the next day, especially if it's winter and the house is chilly anyway.

We don't eat meat in our house, so it might be different if we did, but we've been eating carelessly stored leftovers for years and never had food poisoning or bad tummies.

LeilaDarling · 01/01/2019 16:37

My foxes 🦊 eat all our leftovers 😜

Knittedfairies · 01/01/2019 16:37

Someone upthread mentioned leftover roast potatoes. Leftover roast potatoes...

Notso · 01/01/2019 16:38

It's the reheating of things like lasagne, pie or a roast dinner that I've never mastered. It's fine for me as I'll eat them cold or badly microwaved but DH and the kids won't.

Also cooling quickly, plain rice or pasta are easily run under the cold tap.
How do you cool other food quickly when it's s hot day or you've got the heating on?

Thankfully as a family of 6 there's rarely much leftover anyway and if there is it's usually me who eats it for brunch the next day.

Gth1234 · 01/01/2019 16:39

"If you think good in the UK is expensive I implore you to never nip into a supermarket in France!"

Not such a difference nowadays. Some things are rather cheaper in France,.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:39

My food waste digester Johanna (we only paid £25 as our local council were offering a huge subsidy about 8 years ago). She's still going strong and I haven't bought a single bag of compost since we got her!

Yeah. Don't often have those in this house either. On Boxing Day though we had leftover turkey, stuffing, carrots, parsnips, bread sauce and gravy. I think there was one roastie each.

Still delicious though.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 01/01/2019 16:40

I wish DP wasn’t so geeedy and we had more leftovers! The best things we’ve eaten this Christmas were the Christmas dinner paninis on Boxing Day then the next day a hash of everything left with a fried egg and ketchup 😋

formerbabe · 01/01/2019 16:42

I sometimes heat up in the oven...wrap in foil...I add a knob of butter/drizzle of oil with a tablespoon of water...stops it drying out.

GertrudeCB · 01/01/2019 16:42

After over 20 years I've persuaded DH that leftovers are great - his dmum and ddad saw them as something that poor people needed - good quality storage boxes are a must. You cannot beat yesterday's chilli reheated over a baked spud for a quick and easy lunch.
Also doggy bags - restaurant potions are usually far too large for me.

Bertiebitch32 · 01/01/2019 16:44

I batch make meals I.e curry , chilli , lasagne etc ready to re heat or pop in the oven if it's shepherd pie or lasagne. Now if I've got plenty of meat left from a roast if I can't think of a meal to bash together and freeze it gets frozen in gravy for an easy midweek roast. Iv been sat starving without food any money before and thought about all the perfectly good food I've wasted so I don't waste a thing now as soon as it's cooled it's frozen then adequately re heated and no it doesn't taste awful if done correctly. I'm guessing people that don't eat left overs don't eat ready meals? And yes I'm poor Grin

chillpizza · 01/01/2019 16:45

I only eat take away pizza and Chinese left overs. I genuinely didn’t know what buble and squawk was until a couple of years ago. It just was not the done thing growing up and to be honest most of the time sounds revolting.

Ringdonna · 01/01/2019 16:46

Some leftovers but not many. Hate the doggy bag thing in the US.
