To not understand people that dont eat leftovers?

I've seen a lot of people say this, and wondered why? What could eating leftovers possibly do to you? Is it a fear of poverty in some way?

My sister knew a girl that would roast a chicken for Sunday dinner and only eat the breasts and throw the rest away. To me, that's madness, I'd get at least 2-3 dinners and a soup out of a large chicken.

DH used to be like that until he met me and I shamed him into being less wasteful. (Though he shames me about it now...)

Dinner is repurposed for lunchboxes with a bit of salad and if bones into stock.

Leftover wine sometimes chucked into stews and if I have any old fruit getting a bit soft, gets chucked into a crumble.

If I can be bothered, leftover /failed cake will be mixed with alcohol, dipped into chocolate for cake balls. Lol.

Volcanoblast216 · 17/03/2019 13:43

Well could I have all the food you're going to put in the bin?

WorraLiberty · 17/03/2019 13:46

The food will be 2.5 months old now...

Volcanoblast216 · 04/04/2019 20:53

@batsarecool girl, you are my hero! After Xmas we had tons of food left because we hosted family. We overcooked a bit but decided we didn't want any of it anymore. We we're done with it all and it all went into a few bin bags because you need to use a few when you're throwing away more than
half a turkey. All the desserts, veg, everything went in the bin and I was so glad to see it go. The next day I was bringing more rubbish out and there was a guy going threw my bins. I guessed he smelled the food and asked whether I was throwing it all out. I told him it's in bin bags so yeah I don't want it. I told him he could take everything and be my bin man because I just wanted my bins emptied and don't care who empties them. He took all the rubbish and I was happy. Was it wasteful to throw away at least 5 days worth of food, yeah but we didn't want it so it needed to go

Chesneyhawkes1 · 04/04/2019 20:55

Never have any. Have 3 dogs so whatever is left they eat 😋

TheDogsMother · 05/04/2019 08:54

Leftover wine ??? 😂

Friedspamfritters · 05/04/2019 08:55

That would seriously piss me off what a waste!

Volcanoblast216 · 13/05/2019 10:08

Well if you'd like to stop by my house on bin day and get all the food out of my bins you're more than welcome to take it

Hecateh · 13/05/2019 11:38

Love leftovers
I live alone and had a gastric bypass 20 years ago so can only eat small meals. Cooking proper meals for one is just so wasteful and time consuming.

I cook about once a week and freeze at least 5 of my size portions (with soup it's often 20 portions). At any one time I have anything from 10 to 30 home made ready meals in the freezer. It's often pot luck what I get to eat as I can't be bothered to label them so sit's guesswork depending on the colour what I get.

I usually add fresh ingredients when defrosted - depending on the meal. Such as salad, potatoes or veg.

Volcanoblast216 · 04/04/2020 20:12

I know a family just like that and they just won't stop throwing food away because they cook fresh food every day. They actually told me if I really want the food that bad I could do them a favor and make more room in their bins by getting the food out of them

mrsBtheparker · 04/04/2020 21:03

My father would never eat the joint cold on Monday after a weekend roast dinner, my brother or I would make a point of calling in on Monday and coming away with a lovely slab of something!

Incrediblytired · 05/04/2020 08:09

Oh I can’t bear it. My BIL is the same, buys loads of food daily, over cooks every meal and then throws away loads - probably several meals worth every day, not even recycling food waste. I abhor it.

Pickupapenguinnnn · 05/04/2020 08:48

Some of the comments on this thread are shocking. Food waste makes me really sad. Was brought up to use up food and make good use of the freezer. I also agree that many meals taste better the next day because the flavours have marinated more. Maybe if a year's worth of waste was laid out in front of some posters here, it would lead them to rethink.

Scarlettpixie · 05/04/2020 09:03

I love leftovers. I often batch cook too.

Thehop · 05/04/2020 09:07

God, I’d go mad having to cook every meal fresh! Dinner always does a couple of lunches here, and curry/chilli/stew is always better the next day!

BananaPlant · 05/04/2020 09:27

I know this is a zombie thread but I wonder if anyone’s attitudes to throwing away food has changed now we are in lockdown.

I’m even more aware now of using what we have in the fridge. Made a lovely curry the other night with leftover chicken and veg.

longwayoff · 05/04/2020 09:35

The Resurrection of the Mumsnet Chicken 🐔. Just in time for Easter. Hurrah!

PineappleDanish · 05/04/2020 09:36

Obviously not @Volcanoblast216, who bumped a year and a bit old thread only to comment how brave and amazing she is for chucking loads of food away Hmm

Still not wasting food here. Still buying yellow stickers. Council have suspended food waste collection along with recycling at the moment and it feels so WRONG to put potato peelings and scraps in the ordinary bin.

teainthetardis · 05/04/2020 10:34

I love batch cooking - Sunday is my meal prep and pottering day.

Sceptre86 · 05/04/2020 11:13

I don't understand how you can not like left overs? If you are the original meal what is there not to like? Genuinely would like to know what it is about left overs that people don't like!

I made a curry with rice yesterday, there is enough left for us all to eat today. It saves me having to cook again today and nothing gets wasted. I don't see why you wouldn't either freeze left overs or be a bit inventive with them? For the households that cook just enough food, what if one of the kids friends wants to stay for dinner,if you have unexpected guests or you just fancy having another helping? We all have a responsibility to reduce food waste.

The Resurrection of the Mumsnet Chicken 🐔. Just in time for Easter. Hurrah!

I think MN chicken is actually a dinosaur 😂
Nice zombie

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 05/04/2020 11:20

Lots of food are actually better next day when the flavours have time to marry overnight!

Griselda1 · 05/04/2020 11:23

It was a bit scary when I read that someone had just finished their Christmas leftovers and a relief to realise that it was a January post.

Justnot · 05/04/2020 11:26

Long thread so may have missed mention of histamine intolerance. I allegedly have it - left over foods are higher in it. So not everyone can eat leftover food - or butter left out of the fridge to reference another MN debate.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 05/04/2020 11:32

I usually only cook what I need to eat so no leftovers normally. The only time I have leftovers (which I do eat) is Christmas Day and Boxing day when it's difficult to guage what guests may eat.
