To not understand people that dont eat leftovers?

Eliza9917 · 01/01/2019 15:14

I've seen a lot of people say this, and wondered why? What could eating leftovers possibly do to you? Is it a fear of poverty in some way?

My sister knew a girl that would roast a chicken for Sunday dinner and only eat the breasts and throw the rest away. To me, that's madness, I'd get at least 2-3 dinners and a soup out of a large chicken.

we also don't really have leftovers.
we serve small(ish) portions and whoever is still hungry can have a piece of fruit.

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 16:17

as I know it's not going to taste good.

Some cooking classes might be the answer for you then.

Stews, casseroles, curries are well known to taste much better a day after cooking.

MyBreadIsEggy · 01/01/2019 16:17

Leftovers are brilliant!
One of my DCs has multiple food allergies, so I tend to make huge, safe lasagnes/pies/pasta bakes/curries etc then freeze the leftovers in DC-sized portions. Ideal for the days where DCs need a quick dinner, as it’s not so easy with all his allergies to just pick something up from the supermarket that’s ready to heat up and eat.

Also, I think curry always tastes better second time around. Don’t know what it is, whether the spices penetrate the meat more overnight or something, but it just seems to be more flavoursome once it’s been refrigerated and reheated.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:18

And I also have a food waste digester so literally have zero food waste in our home

woodhill · 01/01/2019 16:18

Because it's a waste of money to throw stuff away and it is so easy and saves time and fuel.

Gammon - roast for 6, sandwiches, cold with mash potatoes and roasted veg then cold again with baked potatoes and beans.

Made fish pie Sunday for 4, leftovers, my dinner tonight with fresh vegetables.

Also freeze things and use in week when I am working e.g. bolognaise or chill.

More healthy than ready meals

GabsAlot · 01/01/2019 16:19

it is a waste al this but what if

what if i get run over do i never go out again?

store th8ings properly and you wont die

Eliza9917 · 01/01/2019 16:19

Only 2-3 dinners and a soup OP?! I get at least 10 meals for 4 out of my mumsnet chicken

We're greedy and if we let her, the dog would eat a whole bloody chicken herself.

We rarely have leftovers unless it's a soup, big tray of lasagna or fish pie etc, but if we do, they go in the fridge for eating or into the freezer for later.

this is snowflake behaviour. Also evidenced by rigid adherence to best before dates. More money that sense.

woodhill · 01/01/2019 16:20

Hopefully you won't Gabs 😊

tilder · 01/01/2019 16:21

The only reason we're so wasteful in this country is because food is so cheap. We'd change our tune if food took up, say, 70% of our disposable income.

This.

I don't get it myself. Really wasteful and, if meat, disrespectful.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:22

I didn't know so many people were offended at the leftover habits of others Confused I'm not having that food tastes better reheated. Anything with cheese left over or reheated is gross, grey cheese yuck! We don't really eats stews or curry either

Fairyliz · 01/01/2019 16:25

I love leftovers! All that delicious food without the faff of cooking and cleaning up.
For example I adore home made lasagne but it takes so long making the meat sauce and the cheese sauce and then all of those sticky pans to scrub out.
With leftovers just heat it up and off you go.

Eliza9917 · 01/01/2019 16:26

This isn't a thread about the mn chicken, it's about any leftovers.

@E20mom But why don't you like leftovers? What is it about them that you don't like?

@ThePinkOcelot We get 2-3 meals as there are only 2 of us. And this was before we got our current dog.

We'd have roast chicken, next day a curry, next day salad or soup for example.

Missingstreetlife · 01/01/2019 16:27

People used to be sniffy about a doggy bag because they thought it was cheap. Less so now I think, and you don't have to pretend it's for the dog!
Lots of the above isn't even leftovers it's just good management. So many people don't know how to cook from scratch.
If it's making your fridge smelll you haven't wrapped it right.

dontneedthedrama · 01/01/2019 16:27

I think a curry or a chilli actually tastes better the next day . I never buy ready meals .

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 01/01/2019 16:27

I dont find food in the UK cheap, I've been all over the world and would say by experience UK food are is very expensive.

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 16:27

i didn't know so many people were offended at the leftover habits of others

I'm not offended. I am appalled at the waste of food however.

Nothisispatrick · 01/01/2019 16:27

If your cheese goes grey when you reheat it you’re going something wrong

Orangeyouglad · 01/01/2019 16:27

I on purpose over order from take outs just for the leftovers, I always over cook when making lasagna or spaghetti bolognaise and put it in the take away pita and freeze it for a easy dinner when everyone wants something different

MacarenaFerreiro · 01/01/2019 16:29

I also have a food waste digester so literally have zero food waste in our home

Eh? Food waste which is ground up and put into waste water is still food waste.. Unless by "food waste digester" you actually mean "labrador".

We're having roast chicken joint things for tea tonight. (Yellow sticker bargain yesterday in Tesco, 75p each rather than £5. Bargaintastic). each serves 4, there are 5 of us and we're cooking 2. There will be leftovers. So tomorrow the leftover chicken will be a pie, or maybe a pasta bake. If I'm not feeling inspired, I'll freeze it.

I would never dream of chucking the extra away though, or putting it through a macerator thing.

AnyOldPrion · 01/01/2019 16:29

Had the last of the stuffing, gravy and meat from Christmas dinner yesterday. Maybe we need to go back to food rationing!

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 16:29

by experience UK food are is very expensive.

It is changing, but comparative data shows that brits and Americans pay less for food as a percentage of their disposable income than other countries.

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2019 16:29

I’m having leftover beef stew today which I made the other day from leftover Christmas dinner. Grin

Love me a leftover meal.

Madcats · 01/01/2019 16:29

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without bubble & squeak. The family were warned that I expected there to be leftover spuds etc.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 16:30

Well I agree @LaurieMarlow that chucking food out is very wasteful, hence why my food waste digester is my favourite thing in the house (well the garden) Grin but because we're not in the "leftover" camp I tend to cook things knowing I'll get the portions right, personally.
