To be f***** off by DP food waste?!?!?

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/01/2019 11:33

So I’ll start by saying this- DP is generally wonderful! Could not knock him for anything else.

However, last night he treated himself to a pizza meal (expensive branded one)

Comes with two large pizzas and sides! (Not a rare occurance - about 1-2 a month but he’s otherwise very healthy)

I had 1 piece as not a huge fan!
General agreement is that he stash uneaten leftovers in the fridge to snack on for a few days! He’s really bad for not doing this!

I usually do it but as he’s been on nights I went to bed long before him and said ‘make sure you fridge the leftovers’

Came down this morning to an entire large pizza and 1/4 of another large pizza
A- uncovered
B- on the coffee table
😡

I told him last night that our resolution this year would be to cut down on waste! I HATE IT! I grew up (happy) but poor, in a house that didn’t waste food!

Yes I occasionally throw away old bits of half used food/ scraps from plates and any peels/left over fruit/veg gets thrown on the garden - but DP grew up rather wealthy and (in my opinion) a bit wasteful!

Whole pizzas!!! (3 tubs of humous got thrown this morning too as way over date) when we met he would actively ignore fridge food that needed eating in favour of take aways and then throw the fridge food out as was too out of date (he will eat things a few days over but not more than a week) he has got ALOT better since then!

Just before Christmas I had to throw a full £7 MnS lasagne as he kept saying he was going to have it the next day (so I didn’t eat it) then finally said ‘no it’s too far gone now bin it’

😡😡😡

It’s SUCH A WASTE!!! He doesn’t seem to feel it like I do!

AIBU to be annoyed by this?

Someone like that used to practically live with us, it caused so much tension in the house and my poor credit card with all the part nibbled then binned take aways

thebaronetofcockburn · 01/01/2019 13:37

I'd have eaten it.

howabout · 01/01/2019 13:40

No impact on the credit card if it was, as seems likely, a 2 for 1 Deal.

Been with my DH almost 30 years. Rather have him slightly wasteful than overweight from plate finishing - he won't eat left overs and doesn't like to risk going hungry.

tryinganewname · 01/01/2019 13:43

I never refrigerate pizza.. I just close the lid and leave it in the kitchen for breakfast the next day Grin

Belenus · 01/01/2019 13:49

Stick a list on the fridge with the cost of all the food that’s been chucked away so far. Do weekly totals. Can be quite an eye-opener

Even on a 6-figure salary, just imagine throwing £10 notes in the bin. I'm careful with food anyway but doing that made me even more careful. You wouldn't willingly throw money in the bin, so why throw away food that has cost that much?

ToEarlyForDecorations · 01/01/2019 13:49

*I would let him eat the pizza.

Not the kitten though*

That's a relief.

DerelictWreck · 01/01/2019 13:52

If you throw that pizza away then it's you wasting the food!

It will be fine - throwing away perfectly good food because you don't understand best buy dates or dislike uncovered food etc is just as bad as ordering takeaways and not eating them all. Sounds like you both need to change if you're going to waste less.

hedgehoglurker · 01/01/2019 14:45

You are right, no way would I eat it - kitten or not!Shock

indecisivepigeon · 01/01/2019 14:59

YANBU but nobody would tell me what “our resolution” would be.

If I wanted the expensive pizza I’d buy it.

Belenus · 01/01/2019 15:00

In the UK winter climate there's no problem with food being left out overnight, unless you have your central heating on stupidly high (in which case there's another easy way to cut down waste). But I would be wary of eating something the kitten might have walked over or helped itself to. I'd probably just shove it in the fridge and tell him it had been there all night and was fine

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/01/2019 23:24

Update-

Pizza stayed on coffee table ALL day as the house is a total PIT and DP has been ignoring it (I assume in hopes/ expectance that I will sort it 😡) it’s also been very warm in here today, unusually so, not sure why 🤔

Just went down stairs to find DP eating the pizza!

😮 Am I the only one who is horrified that he’s eating meat feast (and one with feta cheese) pizza which has been left at warm room temp since 8pm last night - uncovered and potentially kittened?

OP posts:
MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/01/2019 23:27

Also we don’t throw away food because it’s ‘out of date’ - will generally eat things a few days over as long as seems fine but obviously apply common sense!

I ate tomato’s yesterday 8 days over BB- totally fine!

The issue is that he’ll say ‘I’ll eat it tomorrow’ until it’s obviously become inedible

Best before dates can basically be ignored as they're used on items which would take a long time to go off to the point of being dangerous and are a guide to when flavour and texture deteriorate. Use by dates I pay more attention to but if it's coming up to the use by date and isn't eaten, just freeze it.

With fruit and veg I ignore any date stamp and use my eyes and nose to work out if it's OK to eat.

I'm not horrified, I'd leave him to it. If he's ill, it's his problem. If he's not, well great stuff he hasn't wasted the pizza.

Aridane · 02/01/2019 06:54

Great - so no food waste!

So if your AIBU now about your huasband's food storage practices?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 02/01/2019 07:25

Yanbu. He sounds infuriating. I really like Trethew's idea of keeping a tally of the cost on the fridge.

SuchAToDo · 02/01/2019 07:58

Why is he buying the larger size pizza if it's only him having it and if he isn't eating it all, why doesn't he buy a medium/small/personal size pizza then there is less to no waste after he has eaten what he plans to eat and it costs less to buy so it's less money wasted and less leftovers wasted too

adaline · 02/01/2019 08:00

Meh, I'd eat the pizza.

That stuff has so much preservatives in it that it's unlikely to do you any harm. Plus the kitten already treads in everything and gets fur etc. everywhere anyway so I wouldn't let it stop me.

I let my cats eat off my plate anyway 😂

malificent7 · 02/01/2019 08:25

Yanbu op...food waste is disgusting. It's the principle too. In this day and age with people going to food banks....it's unacceptable. I'd take this into your own hands and invest in some good tuperware.

Eliza9917 · 02/01/2019 09:46

Did he get ill op?

Bertiebitch32 · 02/01/2019 10:29

Yanbu but I hate waste and throwing leftover pizza away is a sin! Um I want pizza now a spicy meat feast 🤤

MsHopey · 02/01/2019 10:47

I'd still eat it. I don't refrigerate pizza because I like it room temperature and I don't like to reheat it.
I will eat it at room temperature for about 24 hours after it was delivered.
I'm still alive to tell the tale.
And I mainly have chicken pizzas 😁

adultchildalcoholicparents · 02/01/2019 12:25

I have a completely irrational reaction to food waste - it makes me feel physically ill.

I know it's related to food insecurity during my childhood when food waste meant we didn't eat and didn't know when we would next.

I can watch people drink alcohol beyond the point of excess which is i) waste of money/alcohol; ii) not going to make them feel better (probably worse) or possibly lead to unpleasantness. I dislike it but it doesn't make me feel physically ill the same way that food waste does.

I've just finished breaking down 30 cauliflower that someone gave me. Couldn't waste a bit of it - so, besides the obvious, grated core for fermented coleslaw, the leaves frozen for greens and hours of work because I couldn't see it wasted. It's ludicrous.

Sometimes, these things just aren't rational but I'm prepared to live with myself on this issue.

Footloose80 · 02/01/2019 12:32

I have the same issue op. I feel your pain.

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 02/01/2019 12:54

@adultchild
I think that’s it isn’t it?

Food insecurity in childhood - mine wasn’t as bad as yours but it’s horrible to see food wasted!

My auntie slices any uneaten pizza up, wraps individually then bungs in the freezer on day of being cooked. Then just dry fry in pan for a few minutes as and when you need it---- straight from frozen.
