To be f***** off by DP food waste?!?!?

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/01/2019 11:33

So I’ll start by saying this- DP is generally wonderful! Could not knock him for anything else.

However, last night he treated himself to a pizza meal (expensive branded one)

Comes with two large pizzas and sides! (Not a rare occurance - about 1-2 a month but he’s otherwise very healthy)

I had 1 piece as not a huge fan!
General agreement is that he stash uneaten leftovers in the fridge to snack on for a few days! He’s really bad for not doing this!

I usually do it but as he’s been on nights I went to bed long before him and said ‘make sure you fridge the leftovers’

Came down this morning to an entire large pizza and 1/4 of another large pizza
A- uncovered
B- on the coffee table
😡

I told him last night that our resolution this year would be to cut down on waste! I HATE IT! I grew up (happy) but poor, in a house that didn’t waste food!

Yes I occasionally throw away old bits of half used food/ scraps from plates and any peels/left over fruit/veg gets thrown on the garden - but DP grew up rather wealthy and (in my opinion) a bit wasteful!

Whole pizzas!!! (3 tubs of humous got thrown this morning too as way over date) when we met he would actively ignore fridge food that needed eating in favour of take aways and then throw the fridge food out as was too out of date (he will eat things a few days over but not more than a week) he has got ALOT better since then!

Just before Christmas I had to throw a full £7 MnS lasagne as he kept saying he was going to have it the next day (so I didn’t eat it) then finally said ‘no it’s too far gone now bin it’

😡😡😡

It’s SUCH A WASTE!!! He doesn’t seem to feel it like I do!

AIBU to be annoyed by this?

I would let him eat the pizza.

Not the kitten though, onions can be poisonous for cats

OliviaStabler · 01/01/2019 12:49

Why doesn't he just order less food?

Our local pizza places have so many multiple pizza offers that is it far cheaper to buy two or three for the price of one and then put what isn't eaten in the fridge for the next day.

DishingOutDone · 01/01/2019 12:51

I can't believe the number of people on this thread that think this is ok and that there is something wrong with the OP for wanting it to stop.

Imagine if a woman posted:

"I order loads of takeaway food easily enough for a family then I eat a bit of it and leave the rest on the coffee table. I can do this whenever I like. My husband objects, but he's just a controlling arse, I mean our pets can eat a bit of it or if he's that bothered he can stick it in the fridge. We earns loads of money so who cares eh? I'm having a great time!"

how would that thread pan out?

RebeccaWrongDaily · 01/01/2019 12:54

i didn't say it was ok, i said it was NYE, seems a tiny thing to start the new year having a row about.
I also think she sounds a little OTT and a manic about this issue.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 01/01/2019 12:55

Have you ever lived in a shared flat? A survival rule: all flatmates are entitled to three totally infuriating habits.

If you move in (or have moved in) with your DP, this will be one of his three. Leave him to it. Don't put the pizza in the fridge, don't eat it, don't get involved.

Eliza9917 · 01/01/2019 12:58

He won’t eat unrefrigerated pizza today - it would be fine if it were plain toppinigs or pepperoni but it’s fancy meat feast ones so really don’t think it’s ok having been out since 8pm last night

I'd eat it.

He's an arse to be so wasteful.

Bananalanacake · 01/01/2019 13:01

But isn't the lasagne ok past its use by date if it's shrink wrapped?

adaline · 01/01/2019 13:03

I don't see a problem either. I'll eat leftover pizza that's been out for 48 hours even if it has meat on it - that stuff is so caked in preservatives anyway!

Why are you throwing away ready meals and sausages though? Just stick them in the freezer or cook them and then you have another few days in them.

adaline · 01/01/2019 13:04

Why should he be able to waste all that money? Why not just get one pizza?

It's often far cheaper to get a meal deal for two pizzas and sides than it is to just buy one pizza and one side.

starcrossedseahorse · 01/01/2019 13:05

The only issue I can see is that you let a kitten eat shit human food. You need to stop that happening.

Eliza9917 · 01/01/2019 13:06

We deliberately order 18" pizzas so we have some left for breakfast/lunch. Blush

Just be thankful he's bringing home 2 pizzas to share with you rather than buying a round on the way home if wasted money is the issue.

Does he buy pizza in preference to the "healthy" food shop which gets thrown out with the excess pizza? Sounds like you are over buying rather than throwing too much out. Before we had DC we kept the fridge empty and bought day to day.

I would eat refrigerated pizza for breakfast, but not with meat on.

llangennith · 01/01/2019 13:10

He's lazy rather than wasteful. Too lazy to make the effort to put the food in the fridge.

Absentwomen · 01/01/2019 13:11

Is your issue, OP, the fact that you grew up in hardship?

Food waste is a huge problem in this country and I am with you on that. I'm a frugal cook and my husband would die of a nervous breakdown if he was to know what I chuck in casseroles and soups.

You're focusing on him when you can control this. But, you keep referring to your childhood. Look at a bit deeper into this and resolve your issues. The pizza would have been fine.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 01/01/2019 13:11

Almost All of the food items you say you waste could have been frozen. So instead of binning them just put them in the freezer.

Missingstreetlife · 01/01/2019 13:15

I put everything that will freeze in the freezer, then get it out as needed, it doesn't stop it all though, veg is the worst. Would pizza freeze, you could warm it up in the oven?

Aridane · 01/01/2019 13:15

I never knew people actually put left over takeaway pizza in the fridge! Thought you left out on the counter and ate again Later in the evening or the next day

LetBartletBeBartlet · 01/01/2019 13:16

The tomato sauce is also bad for the kitten.

I know it's going OT, but you're going to make it poorly if you keep doing this. Then you can also add in vet bills as a going concern.

The4thSandersonSister · 01/01/2019 13:16

It's just a pizza, and I think your 6 figures can take the hit every once and a while on the food wastage front. There is an element of worthiness about "food wastage" in your post OP that can become very wearing. Unclench and the petty sniping about a left over - maybe kittened, maybe not pizza won5 b3 such an issue. Photo of kitten please.

category12 · 01/01/2019 13:17

Yes, bring on the kitten pics Grin

ragged · 01/01/2019 13:18

Just lie & say it was refridgerated all night? FGS, it's mostly salt, it won't go off quickly.

You're both control freaks being so fussy.

Onescaredmuma · 01/01/2019 13:18

I'd have eaten it cold for breakfast!! Ahh to be a student again Grin

C8H10N4O2 · 01/01/2019 13:23

I also hate food waste and its nothing to do with income - its about the waste.

The visual reminder might help him appreciate how much is wasted but will that stop him? Also wondering why does he buy two pizzas instead of one?

Do you plan a menu each week and shop for it or just randomly buy stuff? If the latter then you are pretty much guaranteed to waste food and its worth trying to plan your meals more.

The4thSandersonSister · 01/01/2019 13:25

With the amount of preservatives and additives it's most likely that it will be just the cockroaches and the takeaway pizzas that will inherit the earth.
