Ooh, shiny things.

Sorry what was your point? That I should get some Colgate? Adding to the shopping list now.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2018 21:30

What is it before i click the non clicky link.

Trinpy · 31/12/2018 21:35

Sparkling it is an advert with a woman walking past a massive handbag and stiletto while the voiceover asks whether it's your shoes or bag that makes you 'amazing'. No it's your smile after you use whitening toothpaste.

crispysausagerolls · 31/12/2018 21:42

Sorry for the lack of clicky link! Useless with technology (probably because I’m so concerned with my white smile, handbags and shoes!)

NorksAreMessy · 31/12/2018 21:43

sigh

I have been protesting this crap for FORTY years. I am tired now. Really properly tired

Nothisispatrick · 31/12/2018 21:43

You don’t need a clicky link, you can just click the image of the video.

crispysausagerolls · 31/12/2018 21:45

Also sorry if someone has made a post before about this etc but I have only just seen this advert somehow and was genuinely amazed to not have heard of it before now!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2018 21:45

Thanks. The image hadnt appeared earlier.

Trinpy · 31/12/2018 21:45

It's actually better than a clicky link imo because if you click on the video it plays without directing you away from MN.

And I agree with you OP. It's a load of sexist bullshit which reduces women to stupid stereotypes. Pretty standard for advertisements though unfortunately.

extremelymaturecheese · 31/12/2018 21:49

Colgate sell shit toothpaste. That is all. Grin

whatsnewchoochoo · 31/12/2018 21:54

I'm one of those feminists who argues with strangers about women's rights.

But it's a tooth whitening product? It's target market (and I'll bet largest market) is women who care about the way they look.

It would be a weird advert if it said "what makes you amazing is your intellect ... now don't you also need really white teeth"

Yabbers · 31/12/2018 21:57

Aren’t all beauty products advertised to women, ncouragung them to be their best selves by covering up their natural features? Not sure why this one is a problem.

crispysausagerolls · 31/12/2018 21:59

Come on whatsnewchoochoo , it’s extremely patronising to assume that heels and handbags are all that women bloody care about re their appearance. Additionally, why should tooth whitening products be geared only towards women? Men don’t care about their appearance too? It’s all just very gendered and sexist.

OP posts:
CoffeeMilkNoSugar · 31/12/2018 21:59

It's not just this one, Yabbers. Each and every one of these adverts is a huge problem.

crispysausagerolls · 31/12/2018 22:01

Maybe IABU then for just singling out this one; I can’t really explain why it has bothered me so much more than any others, but I just find it so explicitly and unashamedly sexist.

OP posts:
TornFromTheInside · 31/12/2018 22:01

Don't buy the product, then they'll come to the conclusion that their marketing doesn't work.

Sadly it probably does work which is why advertising has condoned and in some cases encouraged stereotyping for men and women for over 100 years.

MIdgebabe · 31/12/2018 22:17

Gendereed, sexist, yes,

Maximises sales, probably also yes

QuackPorridgeBacon · 31/12/2018 22:18

I don’t really get too worked up about adverts. They target a stereotype and hope for the sales from doing so. If you don’t like it then don’t buy it, maybe email them? If enough people are bothered things may change. Just doesn’t seem too bad really, people use accessories to look good, they are saying a great smile is better, is that so bad?

jessstan2 · 31/12/2018 22:22

I don't think the advert is that bad, it's been around quite a while. I'm not keen on it because the young woman with the fringe in her eyes and permanent smile irritates me somewhat, however it isn't really sexist.

brizzledrizzle · 31/12/2018 22:23

Most women seem to either a) not give a flying fuck about everyday sexism or b) not have the brains to recognise it. I`m not sure which is more depressing Angry

mumsastudent · 31/12/2018 22:27

misses point - I want to know if Kevin escaped from the truck - & ignores daft sexist advert

Poloshot · 31/12/2018 22:28

Ffs surely this is a wind up. What's sexist about it, talk about going out of your way to be offended.

HotSauceCommittee · 31/12/2018 22:29

There are fewer and fewer things that I can enjoy now that the scales have fallen from my eyes: Bond films (Quantum of Solace esp the other night), “ It’s a Wonderful Life” (no, it’s a Sexist Life)...everything is ruined for me.

Santaclarita · 31/12/2018 22:31

Are you all as bothered by the adverts that are sexist against men? Very rarely hear complaints about these kind of adverts.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/men/the-filter/sexist-male-advert-tracker-paco-rabanne-salad-dressing/amp/

I don't care about advertisements to be honest. I either skip them, ignore them or go and get a drink/food while they are on. They are there to sell a product and judging by how many people buy them, it works.

RedPandaFluff · 31/12/2018 22:36

I saw a Charlotte Tilbury clip on Facebook earlier, ending with "Give a woman the right make-up and she can conquer the world".

😒
