WhatsApp groups, Facebook groups etc, etc?

I think that although they come in handy sometimes they actually encourage people to write every little bitch and moan that comes into their head on there. And even tag staff to embarrass them. Eg 'Titania, can you shed any light on why my work space was left in such a mess today?' This hasn't happened to me (yet!)

I presume workplaces ran themselves perfectly well before the introduction of these insidious groups which are a haven for the passive aggressive.

AIBU?

I'm only in a couple, which only have lovely members, so don't have this problem but I can see how rubbish it could be! And also breach GDPR really really easily.

SwedishEdith · 31/12/2018 14:57

Are these just between workmates or set up formally by the employers with all staff expected to join them?

ElektraLOL · 31/12/2018 14:59

They are set up by employers and staff are expected to join them.

I wouldn't join them. If it's a requirement, a work phone would be provided.

I use Twitter for professional development, but that's my choice. And I switch off notifications in holidays (I'm a teacher).

ElektraLOL · 31/12/2018 15:04

I find that it just causes me anxiety not knowing what will appear. I have various different experiences of these groups now and they are all the same. People sending photos of a situation and whining, etc. I'm on the spectrum so it's probably worse for me.

We have staff meetings. I feel that should be fine. I would expect my boss to speak to me directly if we needed to discuss something important.

If I leave the groups I'm worried that I would be accused of not being a team player.

Passive, aggressive would get the thumbs down where I work because they are open to the public as a marketing tool.

SwedishEdith · 31/12/2018 15:06

So, not everyone is a team player - lots have to fake it. Just switch off the notifications. You won't be the only one.

ElektraLOL · 31/12/2018 15:08

Ah, you see ours are closed groups.

We have a work WhatsApp group but it is kept purely for official stuff, petty bitchiness would be clamped down on hard and fast by management.
