What is the point of this married person allowance?

When so many cuts are being made to so many vital services can anyone tell me what the need or purpose of this is?

Do you mean when your personal allowance can be part transferred to a spouse?

Yes. I believe it is called Married Couples Allowance

I agree OP. It's only available to a very specific subset of married people anyway, so the name isn't even accurate.

It's also stupidly convoluted, requiring that people earning between a certain amount know about it and claim it. Needless administration.

Simpler, more automatic (so more of those entitled actually get it with no barrier)) taxationed - this is one of the many bonkers examples we put up with.

The UK government is quite bad at giving with one hand and taking away with the other, introducing inefficient paperwork/agency work in the meantime.. with no real net gain to the end user/citizen/etc.
