To be pissed off hotel has stolen husband's jacket

Just got back from a Christmas holiday from Lanzarote. There was 10 of us in total and because of the sleeping arrangements in rooms myself and my husband had separate rooms next door to each other with a child each. He had brought his Superdry hooded jacket which was borrowed by our teenage daughter on the plane journey. She put it on the back of the chair in his room and it ended up being partially covered up by cushions from the bed which he put on the table next to the chair.
Completely forgot it was there. I saw it myself yesterday as I was clearing bits off the table to pack and could kick myself for not bloody moving it somewhere more prominent. Checked out and it wasn't until we boarded plane home he said I've left the jacket.
I immediately emailed hotel when landed as cleaners were waiting on corridor for us to leave the rooms and I was certain it would have been handed in. Hotel replied earlier and said sorry but no item was left!
So do I just suck it up? Just annoyed as it was expensive and also annoyed that we didn't notice and that hotel staff are capable of stealing.

Just ask again - it could be in cleaners cupboard waiting for someone to take to lost property etc. Part of me thinks that it’s unusual to leave a jacket so staff might have thought he deliberately left it as did not want it anymore. Another part of my brain is thinking what state was the room in that a man’s jacket could not be seen! But I guess cushions do take up space etc.

Update! The hotel has emailed me again after investigation and have confirmed nothing has been handed in but they understand our upset and are going to refund the cost of the jacket. Now that's good service

That's a good result, kind of suggests that they do know that someone took it or they are a very generous hotel

Good outcome.

DH left £100 gadget in a hotel. Never seen again. Was pissed off; cleaning hotel rooms is not an easy or pleasant job and is rubbish pay and hours. But not an excuse for dishonesty.

The upside of the loss of said item is that your husband is spared the ridicule of being a middle aged man in super dry clothing.

Daily Mash middle age men in superdry clothing

NotBeforeCoffee · 01/01/2019 21:30

Superdry is so 2003 anyway

Not much you can do but this is exactly what TripAdvisor and Facebook reviews are there for.
People will always forget things whilst on holiday. You're more relaxed, having a good time so it's a simple error.
What isn't acceptable is the staff who see that error as a chance to help themselves.
The hotel should also see it as a huge negative, not only will they lose the repeat booking of your group, but you're not going to recommend them to others either.
It's a service industry, taking advantage of the error of someone who indirectly pays your wages is inexcusable.

On the plus side, DH once left several outfits worth of clothes in a wardrobe in a hotel in Whistler, which they sent on to us in Vancouver, where we were spending a few days.

A hotel in Switzerland sent us two suit carriers back to Britain after DH forgot to pick them up whilst I was paying the bill.

They also put lots of chocolates in the parcel Grin.

Shockers · 02/01/2019 13:53

The suit carriers had clothes in them!

My DH left his iPhone sitting on the bed in a hotel in London. When we realised and went back it was gone and the room had been cleaned.

We were told that it was probably gathered up with the sheets and taken off site to be washed. When we asked if the washing could be checked we were told that the bedding from that morning was already being laundered and it would be in an industrial washing machine, also that it was so many miles away. Which all sounds plausible enough except that ‘find my iphone’ still showed it as on-site at the hotel and it didn’t go offline until the next day Hmm

I know it was his mistake to leave on the bed but it really leaves a bad taste in the mouth. We got offered £25 credit for a further stay (£300 a night minimum hotel)

I really think you should change the thread title. The hotel haven't stolen your husband's jacket at all. You have carelessly left your husbands jacket behind (you think) and the intel are unable to find it for you.

The onus is on you to look after your belongings. Accusing the hotel of theft is more than a bit off. Likewise taking the hotel's money to replace a jacket you lost is grabby.

Slightly off topic but in September my dad who is in a care home felt a bit cold I went to get him one of the two jumpers I had bought last year. Neither were there, after several weeks of enquiries...it is probably in the laundry although it had not been worn all summer etc...I have finally given up. My comment to the staff that his jumpers seems to have legs rather than arms did raise a bit of a Laugh among some

I’ve worked in hotels. Whose responsibility is it to return the item? Who will pay for the postage? Who will pack it up? Who will get in the car and use their own fuel in their own time to go to the post office and queue and Post the parcel. Should be the manager I would say or the head receptionist. Good luck with that!

I left my mobile phone on top of a toilet roll dispenser in a service station toilet cubicle on the French side of the Eurotunnel. The service station was nothing to do with Eurotunnel though. I phone Eurotunnel lost properly (using DH mobile) and received a call back a couple of days later saying they'd found the tel. number of the service station, someone had handed in my phone and one of the Eurotunnel staff was going to collect it on her way past when she went to France that coming weekend. They then posted it back to me for when I got home. Apparently the lost properly woman who organised it couldn't speak French and the service station manager couldn't speak much English but they'd managed to organise it all. I was so grateful. I did write to both the service station and Eurotunnel manager naming the women involved to say thank you.
