To be pissed off hotel has stolen husband's jacket

Just got back from a Christmas holiday from Lanzarote. There was 10 of us in total and because of the sleeping arrangements in rooms myself and my husband had separate rooms next door to each other with a child each. He had brought his Superdry hooded jacket which was borrowed by our teenage daughter on the plane journey. She put it on the back of the chair in his room and it ended up being partially covered up by cushions from the bed which he put on the table next to the chair.
Completely forgot it was there. I saw it myself yesterday as I was clearing bits off the table to pack and could kick myself for not bloody moving it somewhere more prominent. Checked out and it wasn't until we boarded plane home he said I've left the jacket.
I immediately emailed hotel when landed as cleaners were waiting on corridor for us to leave the rooms and I was certain it would have been handed in. Hotel replied earlier and said sorry but no item was left!
So do I just suck it up? Just annoyed as it was expensive and also annoyed that we didn't notice and that hotel staff are capable of stealing.

Years ago on a holiday to Rhodes I left a jacket on the transfer coach. Took a few phone calls to track it down and arranged to pick it up at the airport for the flight home. When I got it if had a cigaret packet in it and I heavily suspect had been on more of an adventure round Rhodes as I had 😂

0lapislazuli · 31/12/2018 09:51

It sounds like either one of the cleaners took it, or they handed it in but it then disappeared. They wouldn’t have missed it in the location it was.

You never know, it could be misplaced and not stolen. Ring again to see if it’s turned up.

grumiosmum · 31/12/2018 09:52

You are very unlikely to have something taken from your room while it is occupied because that would definitely be stealing - even if you hadn't used the in-room safe. However, once you have vacated the room & checked out I suspect different standards apply.

People often leave unwanted stuff in hotel rooms. I have left books, magazines, and on my last trip a pair of trainers as I'd bought some new ones and didn't want to lug the old ones back on the plane as we were hand baggage only.

The cleaner may well have assumed you didn't want the jacket - it's unfortunate, but maybe you will be more careful next time. DH & I always each carefully check a room after we've taken the bags out to make sure nothing is forgotten under the bed etc...

At least it's not an irreplaceable item of sentimental value.

diddl · 31/12/2018 09:59

Op might still have been at reception checking out when it was spotted!

As said though, cleaners are an easy target to blame-they might have handed it it, or it might have been swiped from the cleaning trolley before they got the hance!

Jessbow · 31/12/2018 10:06

I am sure many people take stuff on holiday that they do not intend to bring home and leave in the room for cleaners to dispose of/throw away.

Like anything else left, I expect it was just put in the rubbish bag and has gone.

RhiWrites · 31/12/2018 10:10

A new expensive jacket from a known brand is but rubbish. It’s clwarlt left by mistake though.

hooveringhamabeads · 31/12/2018 10:22

I did this once on holiday in Majorca. I stupidly completely forgot to empty the wardrobe, which had my 5 favourite dresses in it. It was the very last week that they were open for the season, so I was hopeful of getting them back. Emailed them several times and they completely denied any knowledge of my dresses. It was very annoying but there was nothing else I could do.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 31/12/2018 10:27

I once lost a ring in a hotel and suspected it might have rolled under the very big and heavy wardrobe. The cleaner didn’t find it at first but they did a proper search and sent it on. That’s how it should be. I’ll always recommend that place.

SerenDippitty · 31/12/2018 10:28

I left a pair of evening trousers hanging up in a wardrobe in a posh hotel. They swore nothing had been left. I’m really extra careful these days and double check everything before leaving the room.

diddl · 31/12/2018 11:33

I have been known to take a list of clothes...

luckylavender · 31/12/2018 11:52

They didn't steal it though did they? You left it behind, which is annoying of course.

Santaisfastasleepatlast · 31/12/2018 11:58

We had booked a holiday cottage in Scotland, nearly £1500 for ten nights.
On return we rebooked for the next year, deposit £400.
Few days later discovered ds had left his ds!! (game not a dc!) Emailed the owner and she said she would post it out.
Sent us an invoice for £3.75!!
She sent it to wrong address and we didn't get it.
On return to the cottage it was there.

Wish I had asked her for the postage back tbh!!
Tight arse imo.
And not convinced it even left the place!!

diddl · 31/12/2018 12:02

Something left behind doesn't necessarily mean that it is not wanted & it is someone elses to take though-especially when the owner phones to ask about it!

gamerwidow · 31/12/2018 12:06

No one has stolen your DH coat. You left it behind and it hasn’t been found. It’s an easy mistake to make and it’s really annoying but it’s your DH fault he hasn’t got his coat no one else’s.

nevermorelenore · 31/12/2018 12:18

TBH, it’d probably cost a fortune to post a bulky coat back to you from lanzarote. They probably don’t want the hassle. It’s annoying, but at least the sales are on.

OutragedERIC · 31/12/2018 12:22

It’s crap but look after your stuff better. You know where you last saw it, you have no idea what actually happened beyond that.

There’s not really much more can be said is there?

Lifeofsmiley · 31/12/2018 12:29

What sycamore said

InSightMars · 31/12/2018 12:32

DH once left his sunglasses in the little overhead box in a rental car. It was early in the am when we dropped off so he hadn’t needed to wear them that morning. He remembered as we were waiting to board the shuttle to the airport ie we were still in the rental car lot. He ran back down to where we had dropped the car literally minutes earlier to be told it had gone to the valet, they called the valet station, they said there was nothing in the car. Clearly one of the people who had access to the car in those minutes was a thief.

Same as a pp with a dress, I left a new sweater (still had the price tag) on the back of the room door when we left a hotel, I’d meant to put it in hand luggage to wear on the plane because I always get cold. Again, I ran back to reception while DH was loading bags into the car so literally minutes after we left the room to be told no, nothing found.

It is ridiculously sanctimonious for bleeding-hearts to say be more careful and it’s wrong to accuse low wage-earners of theft, no one’s accusing all low wage-earners of theft, but some are - if they steal things they are fucking thieves!

GenerationSnowflake · 31/12/2018 12:41

if a grown man can't look after his belongings then he doesn't deserve them..
flipping rude, adults do forget things and make mistake, but don't let that go in the way of your anti-man war.Hmm

InSightMars · 31/12/2018 13:02

Precisely, GenerationSnowflake presumably these practically perfect in every way people never forget to pick up their phone or wallet as they leave the house and have to run back in or never mislay something in their own homes. When traveling, airports, rental cars, hotels you’re out of your comfort zone of normal learned behaviors, you’ve got a dozen unaccustomed things to bear in mind, passports, boarding passes, doing last minute checks of luggage, it’s easy to momentarily overlook things.

BoglingToAswad · 31/12/2018 13:19

I once had a grown man shouting at me, telling me I was a 'dirty thief' and so were the cleaners, because we could not find a laptop which he was absolutely sure he had left in his room. He knew he had left it there because he had seen it on his way out apparently. Ten minutes later he found it in his car, and only then did he remember that when he had seen it on the way out of the room he had picked it up! Grin

Variations of this situation have happened so many times I've lost count, people pick things up or move them on autopilot then only remember when they find it. Why do people immediately jump to the staff stealing though, rather than something being misplaced, thrown in with laundry or lost elsewhere?

BirdieInTheHand · 31/12/2018 13:27

Years and years ago I left some super expensive PJs on the side of the hotel room bath. Called within minutes of checking out and they "hadn't been found" Hmm

These days I stay in hotels pretty much every other week. I always leave stuff by mistake and I remember the ones that are brilliant at returning.

WatcherintheRye · 31/12/2018 13:27

Taking a more charitable view, it could have been returned to her, as incorrectly addressed, then as she knew you had booked again and didn't have your correct address, she just left it there for you when you were due to come back?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/12/2018 13:34

sadly this happened to my sons i pod in california, even had a photo of it on the bedside table just before we left, reached the airport and he realised he had not picked it up, contacted the hotel who said nope not there. he was so upset.

Mummylife2018 · 31/12/2018 13:37

@HeebieJeebies456 Typical troll-like response!!!
