To be pissed off hotel has stolen husband's jacket

Just got back from a Christmas holiday from Lanzarote. There was 10 of us in total and because of the sleeping arrangements in rooms myself and my husband had separate rooms next door to each other with a child each. He had brought his Superdry hooded jacket which was borrowed by our teenage daughter on the plane journey. She put it on the back of the chair in his room and it ended up being partially covered up by cushions from the bed which he put on the table next to the chair.
Completely forgot it was there. I saw it myself yesterday as I was clearing bits off the table to pack and could kick myself for not bloody moving it somewhere more prominent. Checked out and it wasn't until we boarded plane home he said I've left the jacket.
I immediately emailed hotel when landed as cleaners were waiting on corridor for us to leave the rooms and I was certain it would have been handed in. Hotel replied earlier and said sorry but no item was left!
So do I just suck it up? Just annoyed as it was expensive and also annoyed that we didn't notice and that hotel staff are capable of stealing.

I was really lucky a couple of weeks ago. Checked out of a hotel in London, realised about 15 mins later that I had left my apple watch in the room! We ran back to the hotel and they found the watch and gave it back to us. TBH I had fully been expecting it to have disappeared, given the temptation of being a cleaner on minimum wage who finds a high-value item. DH and I were so pleased we left a £20 tip with a thank-you note for the person who found it.

Santaisfastasleepatlast · 31/12/2018 16:29

Secret you are quite insulting....
Lowly paid cleaner here, lots of rooms over Christmas, lots of gifts around . High value or not I am not a fucking thief!!

BoglingToAswad · 31/12/2018 16:38

Maybe you shouldn't judge others by your own standards.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 31/12/2018 16:40

Yulebealrite

As soon as I posted I thought that looks wrong! All the clothes we'd taken for a weekend.

(I'd need a Transit van just for my skirts alone! I like a skirt, me.)

thebaronetofcockburn · 31/12/2018 16:40

It sucks but your chances of getting it back are very slim.

Touchmybum · 31/12/2018 16:43

Frustrating I know, but your own fault at the end of the day.

We always check and double check, and DH and I check on each other's checking - it's actually not that difficult, once you have everything packed up, and tidied up after yourself, to have a good look through drawers, wardrobes, under beds, etc.

Daughter managed to leave a relatively expensive bracelet in a tray in security in Leeds airport. She was very fortunate to get it back.

NotTerfNorCis · 31/12/2018 16:47

Give them a bad review on TripAdvisor. Just don't say the jacket was stolen, only that you left it there and it 'vanished'.

HeebieJeebies456 · 31/12/2018 16:48

@HeebieJeebies456 Typical troll-like response!!!

Hardly. I think your response is typical of an enabler.

I've never forgotten about packing a 'designer' - or any - item that i really liked or was expensive.
I'm very used to doing my own mental work and not relegating it to someone else.
As for being 'anti man', what a joke! Grin
I just have no time for lazy, inept men who can't do something as basic and simple as looking after their own stuff - he couldn't even be arsed putting it over a chair or hanging it up.
That's how little he actually thougt/cared about his stuff.

No doubt he's used to OP doing all the wifework and mental load whilst he 'helps' Hmm

maddiemookins16mum · 31/12/2018 16:49

The hotel hasn’t stolen anything.
Try emailing them again or phoning. Did you book through a package operator?
Just as an aside, what will you be wanting the hotel to do if it turns up?

bouncydog · 31/12/2018 16:52

Left my iPhone charger at Premier Inn in the City. Noticed the day after I left so called the hotel on the off chance they had it. Desk clerk promised to investigate and rang back 10 minutes later advising housekeeping had it and they were going to post it back, which they did free of charge!

Secretlifeofme · 31/12/2018 17:07

@santaisfastasleepatlast sorry, I didn't mean to be insulting at all Blush was just pleasantly surprised but maybe I worded it badly. My apologies to anyone who may have felt offended by my comments Flowers

CoughLaughFart · 31/12/2018 17:21

Op. i bet the jacket was just thrown in the laundry. It wasnt stolen it was left so your angry is wrong. Just a side note ive only just learnt superdry isnt a type of nappy like i thought as i know others think that but a brand of clothing. Might make your husband feel better about losing his jacket.

Are you collecting Cunt Points like they’re Airmiles? If so you can stop - you have more than enough.

SirGawain · 31/12/2018 17:26

Just looked at the Superdry website for prices; unless it's one of the more expensive leather, or all weather jackets I wouldn't think it was worth the effort of taking things further. Annoyning but lost or stolen, it's your word against thiers.

Jaxhog · 31/12/2018 17:32

I did this with a pair of shoes in New Orleans. Never found, but travel Insurance paid up.

CoughLaughFart · 31/12/2018 17:39

A guest phones from home after checking out saying her £**s camera is missing so can the room be checked.
It wasn't found, so guest accused me of having stolen it.

Work was awful the next few days.
Work questioned me about the room, without quite accusing me, but even my close colleagues were off with me and giving me funny looks.

Several days later the guest phones back to let the hotel know that "silly me, I found it in one of my hat boxes, haha"

No apology. From her, or hotel management.

Was weeks before work got mostly back to normal for me.*

I'm sure this was distressing, but what was the guest supposed to do? Say ‘Oh well, bad luck’?

You were questioned; you were found innocent. If this is too stressful for anyone to go through, no one should ever report a crime to the police.

notacooldad · 31/12/2018 17:43

With all the stuff posters are saying they have left behind does nobody do a final walk through before they go through the door.
Without wanting to sound too fanatical before I leave a hotel room or apartment I always do a final check starting at the far side, working my way across the room, under the bed, between the bed if it's two pushed together, final check in every wardrobe, final check in the bathroom, check bathroom door etc.

Ive been doing this since I was 19 and left some pyjamas in Mallorca!!
I taught my lads. One of them ( when he was 12) refused and was gutted when he left his favorite shirt. He is now as fanatical as me for final checks!

BoglingToAswad · 31/12/2018 17:46

I'm sure this was distressing, but what was the guest supposed to do? Say ‘Oh well, bad luck’?

She was supposed to look for her camera properly before accusing the cleaner of theft.

foxtiger · 31/12/2018 17:54

My DS1 left a couple of t-shirts behind in a hotel (in England) in the summer, and although he phoned them several times they supposedly never turned up.

Presumably somebody took them, but it's hard to know who. It could have been the cleaner, or if they weren't in a very obvious place, maybe someone who stayed in the room after him. He let it drop after about 3 phone calls and I think he was right to do that, because it's just not possible to know where they've gone. We won't be staying in that hotel again anyway, because of other things we weren't very impressed with about it.

Jaxtellerswife · 31/12/2018 18:31

Cleaners in kos took our alcohol and we hadn't even come close to checkout lol. Spotted it in their cleaning cupboard, words were had.

CoughLaughFart · 31/12/2018 18:31

She was supposed to look for her camera properly before accusing the cleaner of theft.

Maybe she looked AND asked the hotel about the cleaners. Just a thought.

Santaisfastasleepatlast · 31/12/2018 20:37

Apology accepted Wine.
When I stayed in a local Possada in Brazil it was regular practice that all the toiletries were left for the staff . We left all our summer clothing items too. We handed them in at the end of the trip, never hand picked from our rooms!!

ChristmasFluff · 31/12/2018 21:04

NEC had my purse sat waiting to be claimed when I rang them, thinking it would be pointless.

An apartment owner in Yorkshire posted my son's Little Cow back before we even knew he was missing.

The cleaners in the Las Vegas Hilton left loads of booze in a wardrobe as part of a generally mucky room when we arrived. We weren't interested in it, so we left it too. For all I know, it could still be there.

HeebieJeebies456 · 31/12/2018 22:58

Grin Grin Grin

I'm sure he can replace it easily, almost all the charity shops in my city have Superdry hoodies and stuff for sale for less than a tenner.

BoglingToAswad · 31/12/2018 23:21

Maybe she looked AND asked the hotel about the cleaners. Just a thought.

But she didn't just ask. She accused someone of theft, before she had looked in all of the bags and boxes she had with her!

Do you seriously think it is ok to accuse someone of stealing your things before you have even properly looked for them?

I'm so glad I no longer work in hospitality full time. Grin

CoughLaughFart · 31/12/2018 23:28

I’m glad you don’t either.
