to think that 2 hours isn't that far?

An old friend thinks that 2 hours is a long way to drive to meet up for the day (it would be 2 hours back as well).

I don't think 2 hours is bad if it's only very occasionally and if this is a half way point between us.

Would you drive 2 hours to meet an old friend a couple of times a year? Or AIBU?

It's quite far, but it's something me and my friend do once a year with our children. It's worth the trip.

Squirrelblanket · 30/12/2018 21:30

No I wouldn't, it would be too far.

SkylarkMA · 30/12/2018 21:30

@Alexindisguise it would be once in a blue moon. It's not so far that I wouldn't do it every so often (every 4/5 months)

I don't think it's that far but I'm a professional driver and drive for 9-10 hours a day.

MirandaWest · 30/12/2018 21:31

I’d do it

EhlanaOfElenia · 30/12/2018 21:31

As an Aussie, not too far at all! But I've noticed that here in the UK the same people who would happily fly to the continent for the weekend, wouldn't spend a few hours driving somewhere. Completely bizarre to me.

SkylarkMA · 30/12/2018 21:32

@TheVoiceOfRaisin I often drive 4/5 hours in a day so not sure if IABU because I'm so used to it.

Defo not far for a day's outing. Maybe a bit for a meal.

halfwitpicker · 30/12/2018 21:32

Depends what time you are leaving, returning etc and what you're doing in between.

Cheesycheesytwist · 30/12/2018 21:32

I do this loads to see friends/family (with 3 young DC) and it's totally fine. The only time I suddenly feel it's a bit far is when it's something I don't really fancy anyway Wink

RiverTam · 30/12/2018 21:32

To meet a good friend occasionally? Yes, I'd do that though I'd also look for public transport options or staying overnight.

Grannyannex · 30/12/2018 21:32

It is far. Can she stay overnight?

Outwards · 30/12/2018 21:32

Depends...two hours to get to the seaside, not far. Two hours to get to MILs...too far....

Wink
SkylarkMA · 30/12/2018 21:32

@EhlanaOfElenia my friends in America say the same!

OP posts:
Turkeycondundrum · 30/12/2018 21:33

I'd do it just me or just me and DH, but not with my kids in tow.

It is a long day though so I wouldn't do it that often. Maybe 3 times a year?

RollerJed · 30/12/2018 21:33

EhlanaOfElenia agree 😂

SushiMonster · 30/12/2018 21:33

Yeah I’d drive a 4h round trip to see a friend.

Unihorn · 30/12/2018 21:33

2 hours each way would probably be my max in a day. With young children I wouldn't do more than about an hour each way though.

PaquitaVariation · 30/12/2018 21:34

It’s not too far but I’m used to driving four hours in one go and driving that home again on the same day, whereas I discovered, when organising a conference trip that my colleagues wouldn’t even consider that.

RandomMess · 30/12/2018 21:34

I used to found it fine. More than 2.5 hours just drags though!!!

After 3 hours driving I get grumpy Grin also means that you need to stop etc

BackforGood · 30/12/2018 21:34

I drive 2 hrs to visit a couple of people, to go for the day but I think going to someone's house for lunch, the afternoon and then tea and then driving home is different from meeting at a pub / cafe / coffee shop and going back again.

I would as a one off, for a special reason, but, in truth I wouldn't be too keen.

budgiegirl · 30/12/2018 21:35

I’d do it - my mum and sister live just under two hours drive away - I drive down with three kids to see mum and/or sister for the day every couple of weeks.

MakeAHouseAHome · 30/12/2018 21:35

No way I would do that and not stay overnight somewhere.

cardibach · 30/12/2018 21:35

Two hours’ drive isn’t far at all. I live rurally and have to drive one hour for even half way decent shopping. I have often driven two to go to the theatre and come back afterwards. I don’t think it’s uncommon to commute for that long (though I wouldn’t fancy that myself).

Deadbudgie · 30/12/2018 21:35

2hrs? We regularly drive that far (and further) to see family and friends. Would she be more amenable to driving 4hours to yours and staying over?
