to think Duchess Kate is worryingly thin?

Just saw pictures of the Royal Family coming out of Church at Christmas and was struck by how incredibly thin Kate is, especially around the waist and hips.

I'm sure I will be accused of just feeling jealous, but honestly I would be concerned if I saw an 18-y-o girl that skinny, let alone a woman in her 30s with three children. I can't imagine how severely you have to diet to be that thin so soon after giving birth. I know she is naturally slim but even so, I am worried the constant media attention is having a bad effect on her self-image/mental health.

Just to combat some of the comments about her being bigger when she was younger. I'm 38 now and look significantly slimmer than I did in photos in my 20s. I had a rounder face back then and was definitely heavier. I don't diet. I had my DD in my early 30s (also had HG actually) and I've probably just skimmed down because I'm more active with a busier lifestyle. Not all women get heavier as they age

formerbabe · 29/12/2018 23:07

well, being thin and toned does require commitment and work, so they have a point. No one gets toned by seating on their sofa

That was my point. I reckon Kate works incredibly hard to stay thin. However, many posters on here are trying to say she's naturally that thin.

MsTSwift · 29/12/2018 23:07

It’s a posh thing. My grand friend has the same figure.

Rawlins11 · 29/12/2018 23:07

I am naturally very thin, 5 ft 5 and weigh about 7 stone, this kind of jealous judgemental bollocks is inapproppriate at best. No one decent dares to make a comment about over weight people, so what's really going on here 🤔🤔

DameFanny · 29/12/2018 23:07

Yabu to say anything about her weight, healthy or not. What's absolutely not healthy is making a big thing of other people's weights, encouraging disordered thinking and disordered eating.

And I'm pretty sure a member of the royal family in the 21st century has actual medical professionals around for any actual medical problems.

Have a word with yourself.

Batteriesallgone · 29/12/2018 23:08

I was told by my physio that diastasis recti is an almost certainty once you hit three kids, to a greater or lesser degree.

I reckon many women in this country - because we don’t get physio as routine, after birth - are suffering from this and think they are fat.

I couldn’t believe the difference in my body after physio and Pilates. No diet involved and the exercise was hardly overkill but my ‘tummy’ disappeared (almost!) completely. Also my posture improved immensely so even stuff like my double chin disappeared because I was holding my head up properly. I really had no idea how slouched I had become. It’s amazing the difference good after care can have post pregnancy.

EmeraldShamrock · 29/12/2018 23:08

@RiverTam I think she looks great. Another fit slender lady. See how body shaming the slim seems acceptable.

Nothininmenoggin · 29/12/2018 23:10

SerenDippitty How on earth do you know she was a stone heavier at college? The most ridiculous statement yet. Kate still looks amazing. No doubt she does exercise has a PT and eats healthily. So what I just don't get why everyone is so obsessed by her weight. There are more serious issues going on.

onlyindreams · 29/12/2018 23:11

How come you never see threads along the line of 'Prince William is really starting to show his age. He's far too bald

I often wonder that too, but unfortunately women are always more critical of other women. Perhaps they just aren’t that interested by how the men look. Hmm

twattymctwatterson · 29/12/2018 23:11

formerbabe what I've seen the majority of people on the thread saying is that she's not "worryingly thin" she doesn't look unwell and she's obviously fertile. A pp is right in that we don't start threads discussing how worried we are when a celebrity puts on a bit of weight. I believe that Kate is naturally thin but that she obviously works to stay in the shape she's in. I'm sure her mother and sister are the same.

Rawlins11 · 29/12/2018 23:11

It must be time for slim women to be told we're not 'real women'. Haven't heard that one for about a week and it would be a shame not to hear it again before 2018 is over.

WinterfellWench · 29/12/2018 23:12

@formerbabe

Teenage girls are often very slim like that but rarely women in their thirties.

You HAVE to be kidding me..... !!! On any thread about weight or obesity on MN, (or if someone posts to say they are size 18, and 13 stone and their DH doesn't fancy them anymore,) 4 out of 5 women come on it and claim to be 5 foot 10, seven and a half stone, and a size 4, and they say, well you ARE HUGE, and need to work on your health and your diet!!!

Happens.

Every.

Time.

Don't tell ME there aren't thin women (as thin as teenage girls!) around, coz MANY women on here claim they are tiny, fashion model builds!!! All the time on here!

formerbabe

And what a lot of the posters on this thread are doing is what angsty, middle class, privately educated girls used to do at school... subtly try to put down women who aren't stick thin by saying that thin women aren't that thin, they're just average and don't put any effort into it...therefore if you're not thin, it's because you're a greedy cow.

Eh? Confused

DameDoom · 29/12/2018 23:13

She must be in excellent health what with the best nutritionists known to man at her beck and call therefore she can be pencil slim without too much effort and with all the health benefits the world's best diets can give. She is very slim which is different to being skinny.

IDontNeedNoPyjamas · 29/12/2018 23:14

I lost a lot of weight when I was breastfeeding, to the point where people would ask if I was ok. I've put it back on now but I am still slim (people think it's ok to call me skinny). I weigh less than I did when I was 18. I don't really work at it other than keep active and don't really overeat. I don't monitor what I eat particularly, I just stop when I am full and don't really eat out of boredom. I find it hard to eat when I am stressed and lose weight then. Kate has been sporty and slim all her life. I imagine her life carries a fair amount of stress, from all the attention she constantly gets (yes I know she has it easy in other ways).

Op... you'll get loads of responses from the body shaming neurotic types saying that we're all too fat nowadays and Kate is a normal size and perfectly fine.

Personally I think she looks incredibly thin....far too thin. I imagine it must take a huge amount of discipline.*

I readily admit I haven't read the full thread but didn't take long for this peach to raise it's offending head. First page. How boringly predictable.

Personally I think the huge amount of discipline it takes to maintain a healthy wait is bollix. Personally I think your claim that 'body shaming neurotic types' feeling she's perfectly natural is because you're overweight. I'm 5'5 and weight just over 8st and am sick to the back teeth of plump/overweight people thinking it's ok to say I look too thin/stick insect etc - I eat a varied diet, am admittedly always on the go and am healthy.

It's not ok to tell fat people they're fat, it's not ok to comment on anyone's weight. Why do some overweight people deem it ok??

Blondie1993 · 29/12/2018 23:16

What a nasty thread! You would never get a group of guys bitching about how skinny another guy was! There is nothing worse than woman being dragged down by other woman. Completely agree with @DameFanny - this constant obsession so many woman seem to have with how thin/fat other woman are is unhealthy and frankly, pathetic.

Ps. I haven't even looked at any photos of Kate because I don't really care how thin she may or may not be Hmm

formerbabe · 29/12/2018 23:18

I never said she was worryingly thin. She is thinner than most people I see everyday in real life though.
She looks incredible.
My issue is with the posters who try to say that Kate isn't thin, the rest of us are just fat cows.

WinterfellWench · 29/12/2018 23:19

@Rawlins11

I also get sick of that 'only curvy women are real women' bollocks. So rude and offensive.

And whilst I do dislike fat-shaming, I am also sick of obesity being celebrated, all the BBW bullshit, and women who are thin being made to feel guilty for it (or that men prefer curvy/big women.)

Apart from being fat being unhealthy, the truth is that very few men prefer fat women. Slim, thin, curvy (like J-Lo,) and athletic. But overweight? (Like more than 3-4 stone overweight.) Nope. Sorry, but given the choice, most men will not want an overweight woman.

Once again, Kate looks great.

EmeraldShamrock · 29/12/2018 23:19

She has a beautiful warm smile. I bet she is beautiful lady inside and out.

WinterfellWench · 29/12/2018 23:20

'I mean Apart from fat being unhealthy'

CatnissEverdene · 29/12/2018 23:20

Her mum and sister are both very slim too.... so I'd say some of it is genetic. However I always think she looks so much younger and prettier when she's pregnant and carrying a little extra fluid/weight on her face.

She must have incredible discipline is all that I can say. I kind of envy her.

IdaBWells · 29/12/2018 23:20

I also don’t think you have to work really hard once you are back to your natural healthy weight. If you are active and eat healthily there is no reason for you to automatically gain weight as you age.

Look at Princess Anne she had a couple of children and must be close to 70 as PC was 70 this year and still wears outfits she bought in the 1970s and 80s! Growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s anyone being overweight was still the exception rather than the norm. I think “normal” in the UK and USA has edged upwards. However in France and Italy women still expect to be what was considered healthy in the 1970s and 80s. I think people just consume a lot more calories and snack a lot more than we ever did a few decades ago.

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/12/2018 23:20

To answer the OP and ignore the "You're just jealous/do you not have anything else to worry about/we are all too fat" comments.....

The key thing for me is how her face looks. I was very ill at one point but I only measured as a size 10. I have a large frame so being a small size 10 had me at skin and bone, I looked terrible. My teeth and eyes looked too big for my face, my hands and feet and head all looked massive compared to my body. With her, she looks to be in proportion, not dangerously underweight at all. I doubt it would be ok in the Firm to be skinny to the point of illness, image is all. Remember poor old Fergie who was slaughtered because she was overweight?

But she doesnt need to lose anymore, I think she is about as slim as she should ever be. Losing more would have her too thin I think.

PineapplePower · 29/12/2018 23:21

People are so gullible and want to believe in the fantasy I guess. I can’t say if she’s too thin but photos from her uni and single days are out on the Internet, and she was heavier, what we’d call a normal weight.

I get there’s intense pressure to be thin, but other women in the family are at a normal weight (Sophie, Autumn Phillips, Zara) and no one picks on them in the media. The York sisters do get a bit of flak, but mostly for their rather odd fashion choices.

Kate was also always getting papped with her PT so definitely has loads of discipline when it comes to maintaining her weight too bad she can’t have that same work ethic on her royal duties

MissusGrinch2018 · 29/12/2018 23:21

Formerbabe I suggest you look back at the first page

Personally I think she looks incredibly thin....far too thin

Lets not play with words - far too thin is judgemental bollix - and the same bollix as if I'd posted 'worringly fat'
