To ask if you have ever eaten at Le Gavroche.....

......and what did you wear??

A relative has kindly bought me and my husband a dinner at Le Gavroche.

We're not posh, and tbh the height of luxury for us is dinner at Prezzo (yes really!).

It's apparently a very expensive,
Michelin starred place.

I don't want to embarrass myself or stick out like a sore thumb, so any suggestions on what to wear would be brilliant. Thanks!

We had a meal there last New Year. I wore a plain navy dress & D H wore trousers, casual shirt & jumper. Boring Smart casual. Normal going out for a meal clothes. No need to dress up like you're going to a wedding.
Have a lovely time OP!

OyOy, I’m sorry you’re so offended that you have to resort to name calling me and personal attacks. In my opinion, I don’t think eating at any restaurant can be called a once in a lifetime experience because in my opinion it’s only food. I do find it cringey when others elevate it to something other than a lovely meal out. I wouldn’t call being gifted and owning an expensive handbag a once in a lifetime experience either.

You thinking you called me out on anything did give me a good laugh. Thanks for that.

What a lovely gift. :) I’ve not been but I’ve been taken to somewhere similar and was so worried. It was summer and very warm, I wore a floaty dress and I don’t do heels so I wore smart but flat shoes but I felt I fitted in.

Not eaten there but have eaten at Royal Hospital Road and I wore a long black evening dress.

Check the website as they sometimes have a dress code on there.

This was meant to be a fun lighthearted thread, so it's a shame there have been arguments.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've decided, based on what most people have said they wore, to wear a casual leaf print Phase Eight dress, knitted tights and brown leather high heeled ankle boots. Will dress it up with some nice jewellery and a nice bag.

FWIW I don't have a huge amount of money. This is considered a treat for my husband and I, as since having our children every penny has gone towards them, or into buying our house.

I'm not embarrassed to say that this is a once in a lifetime experience for me, because it most likely is.

Not everyone can afford to eat in these restaurants regularly and if I happen to meet Michel Roux that night I'm sure he would be delighted to have someone who was so looking forward to trying out his restaurant rather than it being an every day occurrence taken for granted.

Yes, just once, many years ago, with someone very high profile at the time (now dead). It is very discreet. The staff are lovely. I was very young and overawed and they were incredibly kind (you know that scene in Pretty Woman with the snails?)
I wore a white silk trouser suit (a la Bianca Jagger) and it was still white when I left (VERY big napkins :)
The food is Amazing.

Enjoy.

Your outfit sounds lovely. It would be a once in a lifetime treat for me as well. Ignore the chippy trollers and enjoy it to the full. I hope you report back on your meal!

Yesitwasmethistime · 30/12/2018 17:24

Enjoy OP!

We have been twice in the last five years, once for the tasting menu and matching wines in the evening and once at lunchtime. Met Michel the first time, he was charming.

Clothing was fairy smart, I wore pencil trousers and a floaty top, DH wore a suit without tie (in the mandatory jacket days).

We like nice meals out but this is a once in a lifetime event for many people who go (including us, who has £500-600 free for a meal for two on a regular basis?!?!)

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 30/12/2018 18:20

Yes but it was years ago and I can't remember what I wore! Something very smart but not too formal would be suitable, with a little bit of bling without going over the top.

ARoomSomewhere · 30/12/2018 19:13

OP I hope you are happy with your outfit - it sounds lovely.
Hope you have a fabulous time :)

TSSDNCOP · 31/12/2018 12:23

OP I reckon from my experience Michel is far more interested in whether you've had a fabulous dinner than what you've got on. He made a complete and delightful fuss of a very young couple on their engagement night even though the chap said, without any embarrassment (rightly), he'd had to save up. It was lovely.
