To ask if you have ever eaten at Le Gavroche.....

......and what did you wear??

A relative has kindly bought me and my husband a dinner at Le Gavroche.

We're not posh, and tbh the height of luxury for us is dinner at Prezzo (yes really!).

It's apparently a very expensive,
Michelin starred place.

I don't want to embarrass myself or stick out like a sore thumb, so any suggestions on what to wear would be brilliant. Thanks!

We went recently. I love dressing up . Wore black dress and heels. There is a real mixture of people who dine there. Can't go wrong with smart casual

Rogueone · 29/12/2018 19:46

Wouldn't worry about going there. Its a nice restaurant, smart casual and remember not to feel anxious!. The waiters will look after you and let them guide you with food choices and dont feel shy to ask if your not sure what something is on the menu. When we go to places like that we are clear what we want to spend on wine and get them to talk us through options... enjoy

MatildaTheCat · 29/12/2018 19:47

Understated smart casual is the way to go. In central London you rarely see women in ultra glamorous frocks in restaurants. I haven’t been to La Gavroche but have been to quite a few London Michelin restaurants and have never felt out of place in a dress and boots.

The high court divorce hearing dress code advice is most odd!

Have fun.

meercat23 · 29/12/2018 19:55

I have always wanted to go to Le Gavroche since it was in its first location in Pimlico. One day perhaps. I am sure you will enjoy it OP.

Our daughter gave us a voucher for Roux and The Landau for Christmas so also lucky!

Bookishandblondish · 29/12/2018 19:56

I did the tasting menu for my 40th with family & best friend. Men wore chinos with jacket and we all wore dresses with heels - so smart casual. I don’t remember being guided to the loo but the staff were lovely and helpful. Have an awesome time.

HarrySnotter · 29/12/2018 19:59

Yes, have been a few times now and it's wonderful.

Last time I wore smart grey trousers and a grey silk blouse with nice belt/accessories etc. Have a wonderful time, you'll love it.

Rudgie47 · 29/12/2018 20:00

When I went I wore a bin bag with holes cut out for my head and arms. Nobody said anything at all.

Villanelley · 29/12/2018 20:01

I'm v.v. envious...have a marvellous time!

E20mom · 29/12/2018 20:03

Yes, you just need to be smartish but I know my OH doesn't wear a jacket to eat there.

TheFaerieQueene · 29/12/2018 20:04

Please don’t be stressed by it. Just relax. I’ve eaten in many many Michelin stared restaurants and often wear nice jeans and a shirt. A little black dress from dinner is fine too. Staff will be lovely and guide you through the menu.
Have fun.

MixedMaritalArts · 29/12/2018 20:06

Rudgie - by plastique fantastique ?

E20mom · 29/12/2018 20:07

Same here @TheFaerieQueene . I always enjoy my meal more if I know I can wear just jeans too!

santababyconvertible · 29/12/2018 20:09

Enjoy the cheeseboard "theatre" - I've been for lunch there with my father in law who is a regular, I was pretty pregnant so just wore a loose dress and probably flats. He wears a suit and tie everyday as standard so just that really.

I took the handbag holder home with me, and one of their hand towels

Dress code on here.

Have a great time!

Xenia · 29/12/2018 20:16

Dress, high heels. Man in suit with tie doesn't go far wrong.
Yes, places like this have prices for the person paying (which these days of course is often the woman)

Tupperwarelid · 29/12/2018 20:19

You lucky things, we went there before children and would love to go back. I wore a smart dress (from Hobbs I think) and heels. Enjoy!

GinUnicorn · 29/12/2018 20:22

Yes it was lovely. Just smart casual is fine. I just wore a plain dress with heals.

crispysausagerolls · 29/12/2018 20:22

I’ve been for dinner and I wore a nice dress and heels

Bringbackthestrioes · 29/12/2018 20:25

Is it fully paid? I would be more worried about ordering the wrong thing and accidentally ending up with £££’s to pay than what to wear Grin

I took the handbag holder home with me, and one of their hand towels
As in stole them? santababyconvertible or they have things you can buy? I’m assuming the latter Wink

IfNotNowBernard · 29/12/2018 20:26

Elasticated trousers.

Badadadum · 29/12/2018 20:48

Took the kids for lunch a few years ago as a treat to mark the end of primary - cannot remember getting very dressed up - sometimes places like this ask for men to wear a jacket, but that is becoming very unusual. It was very formal service but very friendly and relaxed despite this - the kids found it very funny and the waiters played along.
I'd just wear something understated, if you don't want to stand out....Londoners do not overdress for these occasions!

Hope you have a fabulous time and you feel spoiled rotten!

Fantata · 29/12/2018 20:52

The staff do not wait for to escort you back from the loo. I know this because I puked my guts up in said loos after eating a rich meal and sitting between two men who smoked cigars (work do many years ago).

FrowningFlamingo · 29/12/2018 21:29

I've been and it was lovely. I've been lucky enough to eat in quite a few fancy restaurants but I'd say that one is the more formal end of the scale and personally wouldn't wear jeans there - and I would at other similar places. As PPs have said though it's also not necessary to be dressed up to the nines on towering heels.
The staff there are excellent and will make you feel at ease whatever you're wearing. If it's the same as when I went (a few years ago) the menu is entirely in French but the staff will talk you through it.
Interesting to see their dress code says ties and jackets optional as that didn't used to be the case, they had a rack of spare jackets you could borrow if you weren't wearing one!

Badadadum · 29/12/2018 21:53

Requiring a jacket seems stuffy and old fashioned, I guess they've had to move with the times.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 29/12/2018 22:03

It’s smart more than smart casual, think nice work style dress. Jackes & ties for guys not necessary but won’t look out of place. Unless you went ballgown you’d be fine! It’s the more traditional end of fine dining (ladies menus don’t have prices- threw my mum something rotten!) but tbh they were lovely and not stuffy-Michele came round for a chat to everyone and was welcoming & gracious.

Have an amazing time & order the cheese soufflé!
