To ask if you have ever eaten at Le Gavroche.....

......and what did you wear??

A relative has kindly bought me and my husband a dinner at Le Gavroche.

We're not posh, and tbh the height of luxury for us is dinner at Prezzo (yes really!).

It's apparently a very expensive,
Michelin starred place.

I don't want to embarrass myself or stick out like a sore thumb, so any suggestions on what to wear would be brilliant. Thanks!

I wore a nice tunic dress, leggings and boots and all was fine. DH wore chinos and a short sleeved shirt. We were both allowed in.

Can I suggest next time you try to go to the Landau though? Far more casual but also yummy!

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 29/12/2018 19:11

I love it there. Parents are regulars - like monthly! They are much richer than me & dh. You are very lucky.

I wear black trousers, a smart tops. If dinner slightly dressier necklace than if a lunch. Have fun!!

And yes you are escorted to the loo but can’t remember if they wait for you to come out or not.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 29/12/2018 19:12

Landau is nice but I prefer Gavroche

My friend went for her 50th this year.
She said it was really great ; she met the owner and the food was delicious.
Sounds lovely ; enjoy yourselves!

kitkatsky Thanks. This is booked and paid for by someone so can't change it.

Please don’t dress up too much. There were 3 types... regulars (staff fell over themselves and knew their names), business types and the kind for whom this was a special occasion ...couples dressed up, nervous, taking pics. It ranged from sweet to cringey and embarrassing.

It’s been a while since I’ve gone (business type) but I do recall we took the piss out of the non price menus. Only the person paying was given a menu with prices. We had to stage whisper trying to pick out a bottle of wine as we had no idea if it was £50 or £500.

The80sweregreat · 29/12/2018 19:14

No idea what you would wear! Dressy/ smart casual I would imagine.

TinselandToblerones · 29/12/2018 19:14

I have been, I think I wore a dress but nothing OTT, more smart casual.

It’s a wonderful experience, have fun!

confusedandemployed · 29/12/2018 19:15

I'm exceedingly jealous.

AnnaBegins · 29/12/2018 19:16

I was taken there when DH proposed! I wore a cotton summer dress from monsoon and he wore a lounge suit, we didn't feel under or over dressed. Enjoy!

iamyourequal · 29/12/2018 19:17

What a fabulous present, you lucky thing! Go and enjoy (in a dress...😊).

Teenytinyvoice · 29/12/2018 19:18

If you are having the tasting menu, nothing tight! I’ve never been so full!

Ijumpedtheshark · 29/12/2018 19:19

I found it to be more relaxed than I thought it would be. I wouldn’t worry too much about what you’re wearing. I wore quite a casual dress and okay shoes when I went in the summer. I’d say whatever your smartest clothes are will be fine as they are not snooty; not necessary to buy anything new.

Tartyflette · 29/12/2018 19:22

We went this summer and I wore a light summery dress with heels, DH trousers and jacket. No tie.
The staff were lovely, friendly and super-efficient. The food was faultless and Michel was charming.

Tanith · 29/12/2018 19:24

How lucky are you!! Smile

I'm never likely to go but I've loved the thought of it ever since seeing Michel Roux on Masterchef.
Hope you have a fantastic time!

DappledThings · 29/12/2018 19:26

No, but I have babysat for some friends who were going there!

He was meeting her straight from work so went in smart work suit. She was wearing a black dress. Sort of slightly shiny so definitely eveningy but a normal knee-length.

If that helps!

Sedona123 · 29/12/2018 19:26

I've been there, although not in the last couple of years. Dress code really depends on whether you are there for lunch or dinner? Definitely smart casual (no jeans) as a minimum for lunch. For dinner a suit and shirt, but no tie for your DH, plus either a dress or black trousers and a top for you for dinner. Definitely no jeans or t-shirts. I have seen a couple of people ignore the dress codes at restaurants recently, and although they obviously don't seem to be turned away at the door, they have all stuck out like a sore thumb.

SimplyPut · 29/12/2018 19:27

We went for the EIGHT course tasting menu... I should have worn a tent as all so delicious.
Instead I wore 7/8 black trousers, cream silk v neck twist front sleeveless top, cream blazer, heels and tassel earrings with a very plain clutch bag.

Definitely guided to the loo but luckily no one hovered around waiting for me. Food was genuinely delicious.

ThatThingYouDo · 29/12/2018 19:29

SimplyPut That outfit sounds gorgeous!

A few times over the years - last about 5 years ago. I wore a plain silk shift with medium heels and DH wore a suit because he came straight from work. Enjoy !

JojoLapin · 29/12/2018 19:33

Don’t overthink the dress code (smart casual is just that) or overly hype up your expectations. It is a nice restaurant and a lovely gift to receive, enjoy it.

SimplyPut · 29/12/2018 19:34

@ThatThingYouDo thank you. I felt good in it, definitely understated is the way ahead.

prisscalledwanda · 29/12/2018 19:40

I've been and echo what everyone else is saying - no jeans but don't feel the need to go over the top or be uncomfortable. It's quite old school (stiff tablecloths etc) but it isn't stuffy and unfriendly and everyone will want you to enjoy yourselves. I also remember it being fairly dark and discreet so no-one will notice what you have on anyway.

When I went DH wore chinos, shirt, jacket (no tie), and I wore some fairly simple dress with cosy black tights - definitely not a full on evening dress/ cocktail dress. Above all, nothing too tight around the middle, you will eat a LOT and it is ALL delicious. Have fun!

MixedMaritalArts · 29/12/2018 19:43

Just simply smart [ put that outfit you were saving for Elton's Birthday back in the cupboard ] Grin I enjoyed it, should have borrowed Joey's thanksgiving pants for the Degustation menu. Not that I choose by price but Mr MMA's menu ( as he was the host ) had the prices on, not mine as I was his guest - how quaint! Stairs down to dining room ( to help with your footwear choice ) Have a lovely time.

JustBecauseYouAreUniqueDoesNot · 29/12/2018 19:44

It's absolutely lovely and the service is wonderful. You'll have a great time. I wore a black dress and black heels. My husband wore chinos, shirt, jacket and tie. As PP have mentioned men have to wear a jacket and he should also wear relatively smart shoes.
