to think it's not right that I have to keep paying for Microsoft Office?

I've just payed £76 to have it for the year. Previously it's been a one-off payment. Surely it's not right that , just because they have a monopoly, they can demand this?

Bunnybigears · 29/12/2018 16:56

GreenTulips · 29/12/2018 16:56

You can purchase Microsoft Office 2018 for a fixed price but if you go for Office 365 (which I assume is what you have done) then it is an annual subscription.

Elfsie · 29/12/2018 17:01

See whether you're entitled to a free download through work.

xTinkerhellx · 29/12/2018 17:02

You can buy a lifetime subscription for around £120.

Or download Open Office for free.

stilTesting · 29/12/2018 17:03

Don't use it - don't pay for it.

Your attitude sadly sums up society.

bridgetreilly · 29/12/2018 17:05

They don't have a monopoly. There are plenty of alternatives which are much cheaper or even free. But they are perfectly entitled to move to a subscription payment rather than a one-off purchase if they want. You don't have to subscribe if you prefer to use an alternative.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/12/2018 17:05

There's no monopoly. You can pay yearly, pay more for lifetime, or use a free or cheaper alternative. They're all compatible.

Microsoft Office may be the most well known, but it's not the only option. If you don't want to pay that much for it, look for alternatives.

Dothehappydance · 29/12/2018 17:06

We use open office.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 29/12/2018 17:08

Open Office is exactly the same and free. Compatible too. Pretty much every software package out there has a free alternative. I haven't paid for software in years. I think the last time I paid for antivirus was over 10 years ago.

Just because they have a monopoly

They don’t have a monopoly, nor anything like one.

Libre Office. iWork (Pages, etc). Google Docs. LaTeX, Beamer and emacs. The last perhaps not for the uninitiated. Microsoft do not have a monopoly; forty years in computing and never used any of their products.
