Hi Lovely mumsnetters
I wonder if i could advise me please ? I havent been abroad for many many years and I have been lucky enough to have been bought a holiday to Spain for May time,We are going full board for 7 days but my question is how much money will I need whilst there? Have no clue how much drinks and meals out are or the extras i need for excursions as there is a few places we would like to visit,Any ideas on roughly how much spending money would be needed would be really genuinely appreciated.
Many thanks

How many people?

What do you like to drink?

What sort of excursions would you like to do?

Where abouts in Spain?

NailsNeedDoing · 27/12/2018 16:28

Lucky you!

There isn't a definitive answer because it really depends on what and how much you want to do. You could spend fairly little if you stay in the hotel full board. Can you price up some of the excursions now as they're likely to be your biggest expense. You could probably do most excursions cheaper on public transport rather than through a tour operator, but if you'd rather have the convenience of everything being organised, then it will be more expensive.

Assuming there's two of you I'd budget around £50 for the airport before each flight for drinks and food, but could be done cheaper.

If you say which part of Spain, someone who has been there recently might be able to tell you what the food and drink prices are like compared to here.

We are going to Santa Suzanna and there will be 2 adults and 1 child aged 7,,the excusions would probably be to barcelona and maybe a glass bottom boat ride...Dont usually drink alot so maybe a bottle of wine with dinner and a beer and coke with lunch ,,,plus the numerous obligatory ice creams and odd evening meal out ...thank you

I think you can spend as little or as much as you like...

For instance their are still bars in Spain that offer €1.50 per pint, wine €2-3 per glass. However, if you wanted the sea view, nice surrounding etc I'd expect to pay more €3-4 per pint/wine.

For context we spent £250 All inclusive for a 6yr old and baby on ice creams, occasional drinks out. I'd probably take £500.

Pippa12 · 27/12/2018 16:54

You could always find the Santa Susanna forum on trip advisor and ask average prices for drinks/excursions. I always do this before a trip, i find the advice invaluable.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 27/12/2018 17:14

Thank you so much for the suggestions...It must be over 15 years ago since I went abroad!! I don;t want to skimp but then again we are what i would call a normal family so I dont tend to do the high life thing either! Will go and look on trip advisor now ! In fact thinking about it they used pesatas not euros last time I went!! oh heck! Have to say it is such a lovely xmas present to us I am a bit overwhelmed to say the least.Thank you all for the replies I am really grateful

Ice creams budget 3€ each.

Glass bottomed boat ride budget 20€ per person.

Bottle of wine budget 15 to 20 € however remember that in Spain wine is more typically sold by the glass and is not more expensive that way (2 to 2.5€ per glass, max. 3€ for something very fancy. Glasses are smallish).

Cwtches123 · 27/12/2018 17:29

Do you have travel insurance? If not book it NOW, it doesn't cost a lot and it is really important to get cover as soon as the holiday is booked.

starzig · 27/12/2018 17:32

I would go with 1k per person to be not worrying about cash but you will have credit cards anyway for any unexpected big expenses.

junebirthdaygirl · 27/12/2018 17:34

I would save 1000 for it. Great if any left over but worrying about money on holidays if ye don't go often is a pain. My dh and l go to Spain regularly and usually go through 1000 euros in the week and we are not big drinkers. Stuff like taxi from the airport is expense if its not included in your holiday package.

Pippa12 · 27/12/2018 18:07

£1000 is alot of money for 7 days OP when you are full board (breakfast, lunch and tea already paid for?).

Trip advisor is a great place for infomation, suggestions and advice. The forums are fab. Last time we went self catering in Spain we spent £650, but we eat breakfast and lunch in the apartment.

youarenotkiddingme · 27/12/2018 18:14

Get the train or bus to Barcelona. Much cheaper than organised trip. Beware of lock pockets though.

Boat trips usually about 20E/ per person. Maybe better getting one from Lloret and bussing to there first.

Pedalos etc are about 15E per family.

Eating our can be really cheap. Especially if you eat in Spanish restaurants rather than central resort.

You can buy drinks for room etc or to take out. Cans of Pepsi are only 50c and a bottle of Aquarias (ready made squash!) is about 1.50€

ThePinkOcelot · 27/12/2018 18:18

Starzig- 1k per person for 7 days?! Are you kidding?!

youarenotkiddingme · 27/12/2018 18:28

I think there are people who probably do spend 1k per person (or at least adult).

Whenever I go to Spain I'm surprised sometimes at how people seem to keen producing notes from their back pocket like it's an atm Grin

DinoGreen · 27/12/2018 18:33

We are a family of 3 and usually go self catering and budget about £100 per day (that’s to cover one main meal out per day, sandwiches/panini at lunch, ice creams, souviners etc) plus £100 or so on a large shop for breakfast/snack items/alcohol for the villa. If you’re going full board you can probably get away with quite a bit less but depends on how expensive your tastes are!

bridgetosomewhere · 27/12/2018 18:38

I'd say £500

Branleuse · 27/12/2018 19:06

if youre going full board, then you can spend as much or as little as you like. You dont have to go out to bars. You can always get really cheap wine - cheap spanish wine is fine, its not shit like cheap wine in the UK. Ive bought 1 euro wine in spain and enjoyed it, in fact ive never found a bad spanish wine yet.
Excursions, you dont have to do them, and I wouldnt bother with a glass bottom boat tbh. I went on one in majorca once and we saw bugger all. I think further down the med, in a rocky area you might see stuff, but not if its sandy, and in May, the sea might be too cold to dive off the boat and swim, even if its nice and sunny. Id stick to playing on the beach, having cheap icecreams, having looks round shops/museums, and making the most of your full board meals.

I also wouldnt bother taking out spending money. You can use your UK debit card as normal. Its not going to cost you any more than a week away in the UK, in fact a lot of stuff will be cheaper

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 27/12/2018 19:16

Thank you all for the fabulous advice its all been so helpful just to get a perspective on everything. We have transfers included in the package and insurance ..my son who purchased this for our christmas present really did think of everything..It was just me really who was a bit out of touch with all things spanish! youarenotkiddingme · 27/12/2018 19:19

Glass bottom boats are with it in costa bravo if you go down the coast towards tossa de Mar etc as it is a beautiful rocky coastline.

MissCalamity · 27/12/2018 19:19

We normally take 200€ when going all inclusive (2 adults, 2 kids) and that's enough for us.
If we were going full board I would probably budget about 500€ for the week.

Paddington23 · 27/12/2018 19:20

Google holiday money calculator I think Thompson have one very handy it asks a few questions like how often you drink will you eat out a lot and gives you an answer

junebirthdaygirl · 28/12/2018 04:43

Sorry when l said 1000 l had failed to notice full board. Thats how much we spend when not on full board so eating out every meal.
Its nice not to scrimp but 500 would definitely cover it.
Fab present to get from your ds.
