AIBU to think the holiday starts tomorrow?

So, talking to DH and kids (18 and 20) about Boxing Day and they were saying what a let down it is. No, I say, tomorrow is when the work is done for me and the holiday starts. They thought I was being a bit miserable.

I do 90% of the present shopping and wrapping, plan and buy the food and drink, organise and host a big party for friends and family, prepare a Christmas Eve buffet and organise lunch on Christmas Day. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy doing it and DH and the kids do help, but there is a real sense that when I wake up tomorrow morning I can relax with nothing to organise or plan.

Anyone else with me?

Boxing Day has the best bits of Christmas without the faff. There’s tons of food and drink, everyone can fend for themselves, no wrapping, no present drama etc. I intend to lounge about on the sofa ALL DAY

bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 19:40

I'm only taking until tomorrow off from my work, but I have to say the mummy work is never done in my house

However I will have my most relaxing time once the kids are in bed tonight. Bubble bath, baked cheese, leftovers, a good book.

TchoupiEtDoudou · 25/12/2018 19:44

I agree. We've recently had some building work finished so this weekend was the last bit of tidying away of stuff, then a full clean of the flat, lots of wrapping of presents and food shopping. The 24th we celebrated French style. The 25th, British style. And finally tomorrow I can relax. We're just cooking simple stuff (hardly any leftovers here) and enjoying being together

Highfever · 25/12/2018 19:45

Yes we are doing bacon butties, step children coming to open presents, off to mils to be fed and generally cared for ( I cooked and did same for her today) the little ones will play with each other and cousins.

I'm going to get dressed up , put make up on and chill. Can't bloody wait.

CmdrIvanova · 25/12/2018 19:47

I used to love Boxing Day the most except now we have to go to the PILs every year, it's too hot too small and there are a million nick nacks irresistible to 1yo DS. Le sigh.

No; I think today is the best. We'll go for a walk tomorrow; go explore things!

I'd encourage my family to help enough that I could enjoy today rather than wait for tomorrow, if I'm honest.

bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 19:51

Mummy work is all the work mums do as opposed to "work" which usually means a place of work or a series of tasks you are paid for?

So mummy work is Christmas duty for instance which is paid for in love, whereas work is what you receive a pay cheque for in money 😊

madvixen · 25/12/2018 19:51

It will start on the 27th for me. I've got another huge family meal to cater tomorrow but Thursday will see the start of my holiday.

bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 19:52

Not to be confused with "house work" although there is often far too much overlap

I am totally with you OP!

I enjoy Christmas Day, but it is knackering. Tomorrow I will mostly be doing bugger all.

Nicketynac · 25/12/2018 19:57

We are having a birthday party tomorrow and I am back to work on Thursday so no “real” holiday for me.

x2boys · 25/12/2018 19:58

Well no because its ds1 birthday tommorow so its cake at presents all over again.

Frogletmamma · 25/12/2018 20:00

I like the dead zone between boxing day and new year. I just sleep and read as I'm not working. Bliss

bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 20:04

That would be "daddy work" wouldn't it?

currentcake · 25/12/2018 20:06

Yes that's me too! Boxing Day is my day!! I do everything you have done and then come to work on Xmas day after all that palava

SparkyBlue · 25/12/2018 20:11

I agree 100% OP. This past week has been stressful with DH having a business trip abroad and sick DC and trying to get last minute stuff done. We had my family over for dinner today which DH cooked and it was lovely but now that they are gone and the kitchen is cleaned I really feel my holidays are starting.

Mudmonster · 25/12/2018 20:17

I love Boxing Day.
I’ve cooked dinner and DH has entertained the dc and our guests today, he’s also cleared up after dinner and done most of the washing up, we split the gift buying, because he’s not a dick and is capable of shopping and picking presents for the dc himself.
Tomorrow the kids will play with their new toys and we will eat leftovers and watch a film or two and I possibly might get dressed but I can’t guarantee it Wink

KonaMum · 25/12/2018 20:21

Boxing Day is easily my favourite day. Better food (buffet and loads of grazing!), less pressure and just feels like a lovely family day.

notacooldad · 25/12/2018 20:23

For me the holiday started at 15.00hrs on Friday to be honest
We've had people round every night since then so although good fun it's been tiring.
I haven't done much today.

It's been nice though.
I'm planning on a big mountain walking day tomorrow.

keenkaren · 25/12/2018 20:23

Totally agreed although if Christmas Day is that hard work it's probably because you're making it so. You don't have to be a martyr on Christmas Day. Most DC and DH are more than happy to slob about so lean into it and stuff tradition

DonaldDucksTowel · 25/12/2018 20:26

It’s the day after Boxing Day for me, we see family again tomorrow but in the 27th we hunker down, stay in pjs, eat too much and just lol around all day, I love it!

Although tonight is the end of all the night time work (the elf and then the late night santa-ing last night) so I’m looking forward to relaxing and just sleeping - no anticipation, no pressure, no secrets, just sleep Xmas Smile
