To be annoyed at people in large 4X4 pickups to complain that parking spaces too small

Hi, I had parked my car neatly within the lines marked out for the parking bay and was just returning back to it when a woman in a MASSIVE pick-up truck parks right next to me and so i have to wait as she gets out of her car.
She almost bashes my side of the car and then she gives me a look an says "Its not my fault these spaces are not big enough"
I had to really bite my tongue as she had two school age children with her as i would have loved to have said "well, most people drive normal cars and we don't all have a fat arse like you"
Because, no kidding, she was a fat arsed lady, almost totally round, no wonder she can't fit in spaces.
God help her if someone blocks her in, should be a funny sight trying to crawl in the boot to move the car.
Sorry about the rant, but she really got on my goat.

women can't park for shit anyway. for that reasn alone wome should be banned from driving large vehicles unless te pass a specal "i can park evn though i am a woman" test.

Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:11

silly you for walking, i say... you should get a 4x4 they're really safe.

Boco · 27/06/2007 11:13

Top 10 reasons not to drive an urban 4x4

  1. You're not a farmer

Or a tree surgeon, country vet, wind turbine repairer, dry stone wall engineer or mountain rescue specialist. Unless you are (or in a handful of other occupations) there's really no need for you to get a big 4x4, particularly if you live in an urban area. Four wheel drive gives you better traction in snow or deep mud, and that's about it. It does not make your car safer, more manoeuvrable, or enable you to stop any quicker.

  1. Your family fits into a saloon car or people carrier

Most families and their luggage can in fact fit comfortably into a small hatchback. Even if you have lots of kids (and a big dog), an estate car or MPV often has more space than a 4x4 and can fulfil all your daily needs. What did your dad drive you around in when you were small?

  1. You will breathe cleaner air

Pollution studies have demonstrated that, in slow traffic, the dirtiest air isn't being breathed by the cyclists in the gutter or the people waiting for the bus on the pavement, but by those inside the cars in the middle of the road.

  1. You will save money

Data at www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk show that it costs around £100 more per month in petrol costs alone to run a 4-litre Range Rover compared with a 2-litre estate car. Currently road tax stops increasing at just 225 g/km of carbon dioxide, so drivers of smaller cars are effectively subsidising the 4x4 drivers. Two-thirds of people support higher taxes for 4x4s and British insurance companies admit that 4x4 drivers are not yet charged premiums that reflect the cost of their claims, so the bottom line could get even worse.

  1. You won't have to lie to your grandchildren

Our descendants will be left to deal with the effects of climate change caused by our profligate use of fossil fuels. Drivers of 4x4s should start editing their photo albums now.

  1. You will be less likely to kill a pedestrian

Most accidents involving pedestrians are caused when they stray onto the road without warning, so your superior driving skills may not help to avoid an accident. However, a better designed car could make all the difference to their survival chances. The greater height and weight of 4x4s, as well as their flat fronts and stiff bonnets, means they are bottom of the class in Euro-NCAP crash tests for pedestrian safety.

  1. You might see a small child early enough to avoid backing over them

Big, tall 4x4s have far bigger rear blind spots than normal cars, making it impossible to see a child for more than 15 feet behind them, and much further for short drivers. Check out the facts about the increased dangers to pedestrians from taller cars at www.kidsandcars.org.

  1. You will be less likely to injure people in other cars

The high bumpers on 4x4s can override safety features on other cars, such as side impact bars and crumple zones, and the extra weight of big 4x4s is a hazard in itself. The spare wheel on the back of many 4x4s often takes the place of a rear bumper and increases damage to other cars and the 4x4 itself in a 'shunt' incident.

  1. You will have a better time driving

Big 4x4s are notoriously difficult to park due to their poor visibility close to the car. When cornering, the high centre of gravity of a 4x4 reduces the responsivenesss and takes all the fun out of it. Don't expect to nip away from traffic lights either, due to all that extra weight.

  1. People won't think you are an 'idiot'

In an ordinary car, you won't get dirty looks from all and sundry when you drive around town, won't have to avoid eye contact with bus passengers, and cyclists won't mouth obscenities as they squeeze past you in a queue of traffic. As an extra bonus, other drivers might occasionally let you pull out ahead of them.

'Tanya in her 4x4'.

Anyone watch 'Vroom, vroom'?

DH does and I love this sketch.

'Despite having owned several of these behemouth vehicles, Tanya is never quite sure how long/wide/high the car is . . .'

Boco · 27/06/2007 11:14

(that was from that website too - there really is NO good reason for driving an urban 4x4 at all. Not at all.)

IcingOnTheCake · 27/06/2007 11:15

custardo how funny

quadrophenia · 27/06/2007 11:15

Good post Boco

I am thinking of buying myself a lorry, am going to bypass 4x4's altogether

McDreamy · 27/06/2007 11:17

Totally agree with Boco's post (although would like to add rural GP to the list ). Good post!

Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:17

lol boco, you speak the truth. well, you copy and paste the truth but it amounts to the same thing...

expatinscotland · 27/06/2007 11:18

I think they should be banned in cities. I really do. Because otherwise they'll just proliferate.

Boco · 27/06/2007 11:19
  • oh i did say in the next post up that i'd copied it from that site - not taking credit or anything - ahem, but it is all very true.
Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:21

i was joshing ya, bocs.
and expat, i know it'll never happen as it represents an assault on people's civil liberty to be selfish and stoopid (mind you, they said that about smoking) but i really do agree with you. people from the country would be allowed passports, though.

IcingOnTheCake · 27/06/2007 11:21

My dp's jeep is a diesel and he gets 50% more miles from it then you would a petrol. Plus most people don't think of the cars engine size, they just assume that because the cars big, the engines big which is not always the case.

I have already explained why my dp has a jeep, mainly because he doesn't fit in a small car comfortably.

McDreamy · 27/06/2007 11:22

The thing is though if you do need a 4x4 for reasons Boco has mentioned and it is your only car you will need to drive it in urban areas albeit from time to time so I guess you'll never be able to ban them.

expatinscotland · 27/06/2007 11:23

I was once a judge's assistant, Aitch. The good judge would often say, 'Nothing illegal about being stupid. If there were, half the country would be in jail.'

I see the wisdom of his words more and more .

Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:25

it's not just about that, though. in fact i think that some 4x4s have better emissions etc than some people carriers, to be honest. and someone, i think clutteredup, made the point earlier that her car was smaller than a galaxy.

it's the mentality that's the problem, i feel. the more these cars become fashion accessories (which is waht they are in a city, let's be honest) the more of them will appear. and the fact that some aren't so bad in terms of emmissions etc will cease to be relevant because Everyone will have one, regardless. that's why i can't be bothered with the argument 'i did my research and the model i chose is okay etc etc'. by participating in the trend you make it worse for everyone, you should have chosen another car... it's just A Bad Day for Society, that's all.

Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:27

passports, mcdreamy, passports... we've got it covered.

McDreamy · 27/06/2007 11:27

Like it!

expatinscotland · 27/06/2007 11:28

This is exactly what's happened in many US cities, Aitch - with greater than 50% of the vehicles on the road now being 4x4s.

mymama · 27/06/2007 11:28

Haven't read whole thread, so sorry in advance if already mentioned.

I have a 4x4 and it is the exact same width and length of my previous midsize sedan. I had to measure the 4x4 before buying it to see if it would fit in the garage and the only difference in size was the height. So I don't take up more room on the road although my big fat a*se probably takes up more of the seat

Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:29

lol, ust read the last few posts, mymama.

IcingOnTheCake · 27/06/2007 11:31

I know what mentality your talking about, the drivers who buy big expensive 4x4s to do the school run in etc. My dp really isn't one of them. His jeep cost him £5500 which when you think of the price of cars is fairy cheap, it's a year 2000 modal too so it's not all brand new and fancy. He's only had it a couple of months cause he used to drive a really old 1993 modal jeep which he used till it was hangin', so it's really not about having the latest, trendiest car. He has one because he needs it,not to look good.

Aitch · 27/06/2007 11:36

the ones round where i live don't have mud on them, let's just say. some guy, a really rich architect, has one of those pickups that the ad has children's toys wetting their pants over. never seen it dirty or with stuff in the back. it takes up two parking spaces on an already crowded street. the one upside is that he tends to use his other car because he knows that if he moves the pickup he'll never get it parked again. mind you, he is a Colossal Wanker.

Boco · 27/06/2007 11:37

I think there should be a big wall around the cities, and the 4x4 drivers have to stop at border control, leave their 4x4s there, and then catch a bus. Bit like park and ride, but with more of a russian border control feel to it.
