AIBU to have a filthy house?

So many threads on here where people's houses, towels, linen are spotless - am I the only one who's the total opposite? My house gets cleaned once a week. We have a large dog who goes on muddy walks and then lies on the furniture. The sofas are old and stained anyway. After a couple of days past the clean, the floors are covered in a light patina of dirt and bundles of fur and dust can be found in most corners. That said, we're never ill and are fighting fit in our fifties. So I know I'm not BU but just hoping there are other like-minded slatterns!

In my 50s, fit, seldom ill but like a tidy home, I can't rest if the place is messy. Different folk for different strokes I guess.

TheMythicalChicken · 24/12/2018 07:43

My house is a tip today and it wish it wasn’t ☹️. I’ve been so busy working full-time, running a business, 2 DC, one with SEN...

I’m bloody exhausted. And wish I had the motivation to get up and clean but I just don’t.

PickAChew · 24/12/2018 07:44

There is a middle ground. My house would never be a show home but letting it get filthy just makes it a not nice place to be, so if I see it, I clean it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/12/2018 07:45

Mess is fine but actual dirt I couldn’t handle.

adaline · 24/12/2018 07:45

I think it's a bit grim to be honest. I have a dog who likes muddy walks but it takes minutes to spray him down in the shower - he certainly isn't allowed on carpets and on furniture when he's just come in from a walk!

Singlenotsingle · 24/12/2018 07:46

I like my house clean and tidy but I prefer it if someone else can do it! I do a bit when it becomes impossible to ignore. The ddog and dcats do nothing to help which I think is unfair.

EmUntitled · 24/12/2018 07:46

We don't have a dog but our house is pretty untidy. I do things like laundry and dish washing every day but actual cleaning like hoovering and cleaning the bathroom once a week.

The main problem in our house is clutter. We just have a lot of junk which doesn't have a home. We juse had a new living room carpet and sofa so wr got rid of loads of junk in the living room and its so much better. Nicer to be in, much easier to clean and tidy and I don't miss any of the stuff.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 24/12/2018 07:48

The way I see it, it’s your house, more than that it’s your home. Live the way you’re comfortable, whatever that means. If that means cleaning top to bottom daily, fine. If it means not doing that, fine.

I don’t have to live in your house and you don’t have to live in mine.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 24/12/2018 07:48

Well if it works for you and you are happy to live in a grubby tip then I suppose YANBU but don't expect other people to enjoy being there.

Loopytiles · 24/12/2018 07:48

Your house, your choice.

As a guest am fine with pet hair, but wouldn’t enjoy mud caked on furniture.

Nanny0gg · 24/12/2018 07:52

@MissElaineNeus

So if your muddy dog is allowed on the already grubby furniture, do you often have guests?

And the trouble with houses with muddy dogs is the smell as much as the dirt.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 24/12/2018 07:52

I think using words like grubby tip are unecessary and a bit mean.

I keep my house the way I’m happy with it, which is to clean daily. OP keeps hers the way she’s happy with it, which isn’t. Neither is wrong!

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 24/12/2018 07:55

Oh OP, you posted too early, all these people bounding out of bed and cleaning their homes! Wait for the people who can’t get up yet because they were out last night having fun. I bet they won’t care if you have a clean house. I am in a different time zone so have not been to bed yet, but I totally have better things to do than clean more than once a week, and anyway, I have a DH that can do that shit!

WanderingTrolley1 · 24/12/2018 07:55

It’s your home, whatever you’re comfortable with.

Juanbablo · 24/12/2018 07:56

Everyone is different. I know I am anxious and stressed in a messy home. I prefer it clean and tidy.

Wonkysack · 24/12/2018 07:58

The problem is the dog.
I could never have an animal in my home, hair, fleas, poo crumbs, urine. The thought of sitting on a sofa after a dog makes me want to heave, it's disgusting.
A home where someone is lazy and can't be arsed to wash up and the lounge is grubby is one thing-though I wouldn't drink a cup of tea-but dog smell and a dirty bathroom is the other end of the spectrum and totally unacceptable if you want visitors. I have a family member like this and we dread her visiting as she stinks of dog and once she's gone you need to open the window for half a day to get rid of the smell.

Charles11 · 24/12/2018 08:00

My home is no show home either but I hate it when it gets messy and try my best to keep it fairly decent.

Petitprince · 24/12/2018 08:05

It's funny how some people get in a moral panic about strangers' homes. 'Grubby tip'? Really? Your house sounds fine OP.

DeepanKrispanEven · 24/12/2018 08:07

YANBU. What is important is that you're comfortable, not that you live in a show home.

My SIL think she's superior because she washes her kitchen floor twice a day. I think about the hours of her life she has wasted washing the same patch of floor and know that she's wrong.

FickleFingers · 24/12/2018 08:07

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox I didn't go to bed until 2am last night, drinking prosecco whilst wrapping kids presents and having a few good films on in the background...... Lots of fun 😁
Guess what? My house is still clean and tidy.... it can be done!

brummiesue · 24/12/2018 08:08

Do you have many visitors??

saveforthat · 24/12/2018 08:11

FFS wonky. Bit over the top. Millions of people have dogs. They are wonderful companions, unlike I suspect, you.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 24/12/2018 08:13

Wrapping presents and watching films? It’s ok, you will get your life back one day. And you really won’t give a shit how clean your house is. 😜

pictish · 24/12/2018 08:15

Ach I’m missing the housework chip. Wish I’d had one installed but I haven’t. I struggle with it and often contemplate getting a cleaner even though we’re skint.
My house is usually untidy. It’s small, we have three kids, full time jobs, cats and a thousand things we would rather do with our time than housework. We do it but it’s the bare minimum required. We’re currently renovating and I am trying to throw everything out except that which we love or need. Too much stuff...more than I can cope with.
I am not a natural housekeeper by any means.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 24/12/2018 08:16

Some people who have dogs aren't dirty you know. Have you SEEN Mrs Hinch's home? Grin
