To complain to tesco about date

Butterflysprinkles · 22/12/2018 21:12

So I've just had my Tesco delivery. And I pre ordered the turkey and desserts.

The chocolate desserts which I paid £20 are out of date xmas eve.

Should I complain? Are the pre orders supposed to have a date until xmas day? Im not sure.. Never pre ordered the christmas entertaining food before..

You really can't check every item! But just call Tesco and explain. I'm sure they'll sort something out for you.

EmUntitled · 22/12/2018 21:35

Just eat the desserts on christmsas day. 12 hours over the use by date isn't going to do any harm, especially on something like a pudding (I might be more wary about something like seafood I suppose). The dates are always "err on the side of caution" for the supermarket, they give them shorter dates than necessary just in case.

Bluelady · 22/12/2018 21:36

It's a few hours, they'll be fine.

BertieDrapper · 22/12/2018 21:37

I ate a cheesecake with actual green mould on it today Envy.....not knowingly I might add.... and I'm fine.
I think eating the dessert one day past sell by date will be fine!

BrokenWing · 22/12/2018 21:38

If they send with a date earlier than stated on the website you can call and they will refund over the phone. But in this case they said 3 days and delivered 3 days so you can't complain.

UhUhUhDennis · 22/12/2018 21:39

They'll be fine. Filled with so much sugar that 1 day won't matter!

Butterflysprinkles · 22/12/2018 21:39

Thanks all for your in.

Ok so I called but its a 20min wait I got bored.

I will risk it for one day.

I assumed the 3 plus was 3 days after ordering but I can see how they could include today.

At least I know not to pre order the desserts again!

Another one here who would eat them even later than 1 day over.
Once I ordered some sliced ham, and when my order came it was substituted for a whole ham on the bone! Delicious mmmm

Jenny17 · 22/12/2018 21:42

YANBU it was a xmas shop. Very few people buy a xmas shop to be eaten on xmas eve.

You should not give to guests if they get sick and find out the use by dates it will end in tears. I would never eat processed food out of use by date from anyone as if it's not been stored properly it will accelerate the bacteria growth.

rubaduhlo · 22/12/2018 21:42

Ah it is annoying I agree. But they will Honestly be fine on Christmas day. It's such a busy time of year I wouldn't sweat the small stuff.

Troels · 22/12/2018 21:43

Annoying, but not unusual at this time of year. I was looking at mince pies in Aldi last week, they were all dated use by the day I was looking. I was also in Marks, my mother was buying turkey crown for Christmas. All the non frozen ones had a use by date of 20/12 so would have been 5 days out. She got a frozen crown in the end.

rubaduhlo · 22/12/2018 21:43

There's always one who thinks that food has an internal clock and the clock strikes midnight and will suddenly make you ill.

rubaduhlo · 22/12/2018 21:45

Seriously if the desert makes you ill by eating it on Christmas day, it would have also made you ill on Christmas eve. It will NOT be to do with the use by date.

rubaduhlo · 22/12/2018 21:46

And sorry just to add one last thing. It's people who have this attitude who contribute to the Massive food waste!

CloserIAm2Fine · 22/12/2018 21:46

Can you request a refund online? With Asda you can, including for things that have a shorter than expected use by date.

Unfortunately I wouldn’t expect they can redeliver a new longer dated item though. But they definitely should give you a refund

Nobody checks the use by date on every single item in a delivery when they accept it! Especially a big order like at Christmas. The drivers wouldn’t get through all the deliveries if everyone tried to do that! So ignore those saying that you’re screwed for not noticing at the time

Oysterbabe · 22/12/2018 21:48

I'd just eat them on 25th, they'll be fine.

ChocolateWombat · 22/12/2018 21:49

Its a bit disappointing.
I would probably send an email - not stroppy but just pointing out that you are disappointed, especially as it was expensive and it is clearly a Christmas range and had wanted to use the stuff on Christmas Day.

I'd expect that you will be t a refund or some kind of goodwill gesture, as they are keen to maintain goodwill.

At the same time, it will be fine to eat and enjoy.

PattiStanger · 22/12/2018 21:49

Seriously there is no risk, you don't think food magically knows when it's midnight and goes off do you? Nothing is going to happen to you.

No wonder there is so much food wasted.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/12/2018 21:53

You can specify a date on a pc. It gives you the option.
Personally I stopped ordering fresh food from Tescos as the picker always gave items to close to off date.

Welltroddenpath · 22/12/2018 21:54

I wouldn’t be too chuffed either tbh.

But I’m still waiting for Tesco to deliver. They said they would be 5, then thirty then 50 minutes late.

Cheeeeislifenow · 22/12/2018 21:56

Erhm just eat them on the 25th...things don't magically spoil on the stroke of midnight. Just keep them in the fridge.

2choose · 22/12/2018 21:57

Just had my Tesco Christmas delivery. I ordered 3 Christmas desserts weeks ago. Only one of them arrived. One substituted for bog standard desert, one not substituted at all. Not the end of the world but not impressed.

Skittlesandbeer · 22/12/2018 21:58

Ummm is ‘Tesco chocolate dessert’ such an obvious product in the UK that everyone knows the ingredients already? How can people be judging how safe it’ll be to eat unless they know what’s in it?

OP, if you post a pic of the ingredients list, someone on here with food science knowledge will likely be able to give you specifics.

Smoothyloopy · 22/12/2018 21:58

As a result of this thread I've just checked my Belgian Chocolate Trees, £10 for 4, they're use by today! I pre ordered & did click & collect yesterday evening. They are 3+ days on the website so should have been all good for Christmas day.

Just rang Tesco customer services, they will refund & have credited my account for £5 off my next shop. The only thing is I don't know have any fancy puddings for a Christmas Day.

Off to eat all 4 (can't waste them), may leave some for OH when he gets in!

rubaduhlo · 22/12/2018 21:59

2choose the problem is, the people who do your delivery just do what everyone else does but instead of you. So they go around with a trolley and pick everything up from your list. So if they're out if deserts then they are out of deserts. It's really tricky. But this time of year the shelves are often empty of certain things and they can't magic it from nowhere.
