To not understand why the 'Fat Controller' is still called the 'Fat Controller'?

It's cringeworthy, and, tbh, he's not even THAT fat? Wtf, how is this still OK these days??

In America he's call Sir top and hat or something like that.

gimmeadoughnut123 · 22/12/2018 19:27

He isn't. He is called Sir Topham Hat. I watched it with my 2 year old nephew recently.
Unpopular opinion - I don't personally see the issue with him being called the fat controller. It's a show for little kids.

HairyToity · 22/12/2018 19:28

I don't think they should change it after so many decades. The Fat Controller doesn't seem offended. He let's it roll.

forforkssake1 · 22/12/2018 19:29

He is. It was on tv today

Drogosnextwife · 22/12/2018 19:30

He's not that fat? He's literally a ball in a suit 😂.

Ploverlover · 22/12/2018 19:33

It distinguishes him from the thin controller.

Lazypuppy · 22/12/2018 19:33

Because that's the character...the fat controller

Queenofthedrivensnow · 22/12/2018 19:34

Fat shaming what is....a toy. Is that a thing now?

Raver84 · 22/12/2018 19:34

Not that fat? Are you sure about that?

HermioneWaslib · 22/12/2018 19:35

Because he’s the controller of the broad gauge railway... the thin controller controls the narrow gauge railway.

Bluelady · 22/12/2018 19:36

Are we getting "woke" about Thomas the fucking Tank Engine now? Seriously? He's fat, deal with it.

Intohellbutstayingstrong · 22/12/2018 19:36

What's wrong with calling him the Fat Controller?

minisoksmakehardwork · 22/12/2018 19:41

His name is sir topham hat. His nickname is the fat controller. There is also the thin controller (Perigrine Percival) on the narrow gauge railway with skarloey etc. It's the author's way of differentiating between the two without using full titles each time.

Quite frankly obvious -isms aside, I am sick of today rewriting the storybooks of the past.

It is not fat shaming any more than calling the thin controller such is shaming him for being skinny.

I do quite like the description of the names being because of the full size/narrow gauge tracks and would simply use that if my child ever thought to ask. He's 8 and knows all of them by name.

PaintBySticker · 22/12/2018 19:43

I thought he was still the Fat Controller in the U.K. and Sir Topham Hat in the US where they’re more sensitive about calling poeple fat. I am fat and I am not offended by his name.

ElspethFlashman · 22/12/2018 19:45

In fairness, he's morbidly obese. Spends all his time in a train or in his blue car, very sedentary lifestyle.

crispysausagerolls · 22/12/2018 19:46

Oh fuck off

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 22/12/2018 19:46

He's a fictional character. Are you actually serious?

PotteringAlong · 22/12/2018 19:46

is it cringeworthy?

abbsisspartacus · 22/12/2018 19:47

They have slimmed him down a little though the original was definatly morbidly obese this one not so much perhaps they sent him to slimming world?

hoki · 22/12/2018 19:49

In the new noddy Big Ears is called "mr.squeaks" and I actually think that's better. It would be mean to call someone Big Ears in real life so why do it in a kids show. Same goes for the fat controller. Sir Topham hat is better, or just 'The Controller'

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 22/12/2018 19:50

are we getting "woke" about Thomas the fucking Tank Engine now? Seriously?

This ^
People who get annoyed about this stuff clearly have too much time on their hands

gimmeadoughnut123 · 22/12/2018 19:50

Hmm perhaps we saw an American version then. Either way - Iong live the legacy of the Fat Controller.

HildaZelda · 22/12/2018 19:52

When my friend's little boy was small he was obsessed with TTTE and used to say FC's name really fast. His grandmother thought he was saying "The fucking troller". His other favourite, instead of a knife and fork, he always said fork and knife.
You can guess what Granny heard Grin

Mossyhill · 22/12/2018 19:52

It’ll be interesting when people run out of things to be offended about.

Biancadelriosback · 22/12/2018 19:53

He's sir topham hat in our Thomas book. Tbf we don't watch it so I have no idea what he is called.

Although I have seen that episode where he brick up one of the engines for ever and ever as punishment for something...
