"Hate" in front of children

My husband just listed the Christmas songs he "hates" in front of our 2.5 and 5 year old kids. I told him "hate" is a very strong word and he shouldn't use it in front of the children. He said I'm being ridiculous and it's fine to use it in the context of Christmas songs.

Who is right?

Your children can't be sheltered from words you don't approve of think of when they're in school and a child curses...

I have a relative who doesn't allow the word "hate" around her children. I've slipped up a few times and put my foot in it. Then there are the endless questions from her children upset that I used that word and wanting to know why "why does Calamity hate Parsnips?" Why does Calamity hate it when cars splash her?" Why does Calamity use horrid strong words?"

I think it depends how he said it, the tone of his voice and expression on his face. Kids copy grown ups, you don't want them going around saying vehemently that they hate something with a nasty, vicious look on their faces.

If he said it mildly, no more than if he said, "I'm not fond of these", that's OK. For you to judge, OP.

If he was calling all the singers thundercunts I could understand your concern but people hate songs. It’s ok to hate things. Totally normal emotion. Repressing emotions now that isn’t normal

I tell my DDs that I hate pop corn; I've never been able to stomach eating the stuff. They love it, so them hearing me say that I hate it doesn't hasn't influenced them at all.

I know some people who have banned the word "hate" in their house. Their children aren't allowed to say it and as a result are shocked if they ever hear it. "So-and-so said the h word!" Personally, I think it's a perfectly good word, useful and expressive. Not at all ban-worthy IMO.
