"Hate" in front of children

FSPea · 21/12/2018 15:20

My husband just listed the Christmas songs he "hates" in front of our 2.5 and 5 year old kids. I told him "hate" is a very strong word and he shouldn't use it in front of the children. He said I'm being ridiculous and it's fine to use it in the context of Christmas songs.

Who is right?

Lol you are crazyyyy

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2018 15:56

And this is why I love Mumsnet

Some threads are just absolutely batshit Grin

Cachailleacha · 21/12/2018 15:57

YABU.
You would have a point if he was saying he hated a person, but Christmas songs?

Crazyfrog007 · 21/12/2018 15:59

Yabu

BumbleBeee69 · 21/12/2018 16:00

I like your husband

adultchildofalcoholicparents · 21/12/2018 16:02

YABU - as PP say, do you forbid the use of love in similar contexts. If you do then that is consistent but not necessarily reasonable.

I reserve the right to change my mind depending upon his selection of Christmas numbers that he dislikes/loathes.

FlamingJuno · 21/12/2018 16:02

This is already on the Mumsnet Madness twitter feed Grin

Dimsumlosesum · 21/12/2018 16:05

Oh, OP...."hate" is the least they're going to hear. Your husband is right. Teenagers going past my young kids on the way to the secondary school say far worse. It's not a swear word, fgs.

multiplemum3 · 21/12/2018 16:05

What the fuck?

Underparmummy · 21/12/2018 16:07

I like to be careful about using that word for people with kids and explain to them why its so powerful in that context. For songs and other inanimate objects I think we can all cope with that.

The songs don't mind so much essentially...

badlydrawnperson · 21/12/2018 16:08

I've heard this kind of thing before - usually from the same kind of people that say stuff like "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything". It's bollocks YABVU OP.

Lizzie48 · 21/12/2018 16:09

Yes YABU, hate isn't a swear word. And your DH is allowed to hate Christmas songs, some of them are very annoying.

HopeHopity · 21/12/2018 16:10

Anyone else wants to agree with the OP just so she has someone on her side?
Grin
Sorry OP buy YABVU

supersop60 · 21/12/2018 16:11

OP - I kind of get where you're coming from. Hate is a strong word, although it's not a swear word, and I have heard little children say things like "I hate Nana/the dog/my friends" etc. They don't really mean 'hate', but I still don't like to hear it.
However - there are much worse things they are going to hear in life before they are very much older, so you'll have to bite your lip, I think.

NKFell · 21/12/2018 16:11

I totally get where you're coming from OP but, I'm with your husband on this one!

I think like a PP just said, as long as they're not 'hate' is a powerful word then I think it's fine. In the context of songs, I'm OK with, in the context of a human or probably even animal- I would challenge it.

NKFell · 21/12/2018 16:12

High 5 supersop60!

Rhiannon13 · 21/12/2018 16:18

Said about a person: definitely not good in front of children.

Said about Christmas songs: completely reasonable.

supersop60 · 21/12/2018 16:25

Which songs?
Currently, my least favourite is Michael Jackson screeching "Saaaanna Claus is comin' ter taaaoown"

ravenmum · 21/12/2018 16:27

He should expand their vocab and use "detest" or "abhor"!

badlydrawnperson · 21/12/2018 16:27

Any person? Would Saville or Hitler be OK?

ravenmum · 21/12/2018 16:30

Children, gather around, there's something I want you to know. I hate Hitler.
