I had no idea it was illegal to buy someone a drink if they were drunk

I knew it was illegal to serve them but to buy a drink in rounds...?

Buster72 · 20/12/2018 12:04

Also an offence to be drunk in a pub....

StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 12:06

Really? Wow

Surely onle enforced if other behaviour makes it necessary

TrickyD · 20/12/2018 12:07

If it was obvious that they were drunk, why would you even consider buying them another drink or including them in a 'round'?

BoglingToAswad · 20/12/2018 12:07

It's not just illegal, it's also a bloody terrible idea.

ViragoKnows · 20/12/2018 12:08

Yes, rgyre not rigorously enforced are they?

If they suddenly were, what’s left of the UK pub trade would halve overnight.

Not everyone is as genteel as you Tricky. 😏

Drunk people can turn very quickly, so it's best not to serve them when they are clearly drunk, but I doubt anyone's going to report you unless you are forcing it down their throats!

Littleraindrop15 · 20/12/2018 12:11

I didn't know either

StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 12:12

Rubbish. After two glasses of wine I'm merry. Are my DH or parents really breaking the law by buying me a third

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 12:13

And after two glasses of wine I'm not going to turn. That's utterly ridiculous

Because you're also drunk so aren't contemplating the consequences?
Because your "drunk" is someone else's tipsy?
Because a lot of the culture around going out IS to get drunk, relax, dance, sing, whatever it is. Rightly or wrongly when we used to go out we'd drink til we were drunk because generally being drunk is fun.
Getting drunk doesn't have to mean vomiting in the gutter, fornicating in the alley and fighting in the street

Buster72 · 20/12/2018 12:14

Also illegal to be drunk in charge of a horse, or ride the bus with the plague

Did I say it did

OP posts:
TeaStory · 20/12/2018 12:17

Yes, it’s been illegal for a long time. The pub isn’t going to want to risk their licence. If a pub has refused to serve you, then you were drinker than “merry”.

TeaStory · 20/12/2018 12:18

*drunker

StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 12:18

Are you lot telling me you've never bought a third glass of wine for someone else? Really?!

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 12:19

Drunk to me is not sober. So it is illegal to buy a drink for anyone not sober. The application may be different but its the theory I'm amazed at.

There is a big difference between tipsy and drunk, and it’s up to the pub to make that call.

Hefzi · 20/12/2018 12:21

I was once "warned" by the police for being drunk in charge of a horse Blush (I hadn't even been drinking - it was just an awkward bugger Grin) - but apparently, the actual offence is "drunk in charge of a horse and cart" I didn't have a cart

DrunkOnCalpol · 20/12/2018 12:22

Is it actually illegal? Under which law?

StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 12:23

Lol I am not worried about being drunk in charge of a horse. If I ever get within a few feet of a horse, the horse is in charge

No, it is illegal to knowingly serve them a drink if they are clearly drunk or intoxicated. It is not illegal to buy them a drink if they have already had a drink.

'Merry' is not drunk in this situation.

www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/alcohol-and-the-law/buying-alcohol/

point 3:

To knowingly buy/get, or try to buy/get, alcohol for a drunken person on a licensed premises, e.g. a bar or club.
