Where oh where can I buy some for my Xmas roasties? Have tried Tesco and Sainsbury's with no joy!

I can't believe Sainsburys hasn't got any, their website even has a choice of coarse or fine!
Did you ask at customer services, they are usually very helpful?

SilverySurfer · 19/12/2018 17:27

Roasties don't need semolina. Par boil, drain and shake the pan vigorously so the outside of potatoes are fluffed. Place into preheated tray containing hot oil or fat of choice and cook on a high heat. Crunchy outside, soft inside - yum.

AdaColeman · 19/12/2018 17:30

Holland & Barrett or a similar style of shop might have it.

Or failing that you could use fine cous-cous or polenta or plain flour.

SconNotScone · 19/12/2018 17:34

I am so sure Tesco or Sainsbury’s must have! Sorry to doubt you, but have you looked all around? I would say it will most likely be in the pudding section (where the angel delight, jelly etc is), or else the “cooks ingredients” section, where the bags of pulses, cous cous, etc is.

AdaColeman · 19/12/2018 17:35

I agree with Silver that you don't need a coating.
Use the right type of potato, such as King Edward, par boil, rough up the surface, and use hot fat in a hot oven.

KathrynOfArrogance · 19/12/2018 17:36

Available at all care homes nation wide Grin

DeepIn40 · 19/12/2018 17:48

Ok, to be fair I didn't ask at customer services but did look down the pudding isles and baking isles.

My DM does lovely semolina roasties and although i don't usually coat my own I'm going to give it a try (if I can find the damn stuff) Grin

M&S do roast potato seasoning which has semolina and onion salt in it and tastes amazing

Chloe84 · 19/12/2018 18:14

Your local Asian grocer will 100% have semolina.

Lemoncurd · 19/12/2018 18:33

Waitrose stopped selling it years ago so I've been using ground rice, which is lovely. Happened to find a pack of semolina in the World Foods section of Tesco last week though.

Cadsuane · 19/12/2018 18:33

I found it in the international area of my local supermarket, rather than in the pudding section.

Luckingfovely · 19/12/2018 18:39

Waitrose always have it - I bought a bag last week.

And you're right - semolina roast potatoes are the BEST!

YoungLennyGodber · 19/12/2018 18:41

I bought some in Sainsbury’s yesterday.

Only time of year I ever use it! Not a big fan of the pudding.

Luckingfovely · 19/12/2018 18:42

Waitrose, sainsbury and Tesco all stock - links above!

2b1c51 · 19/12/2018 18:42

I found whitworths semolina in Tesco's at the weekend- it was in the section with custard powder etc. Using mine as a bit free alternative to almonds in marzipan!

DeepIn40 · 19/12/2018 19:03

I'll try Morrison's, M &S and Holland and Barrett during my lunch break tomorrow.

go to the indian food aisle in whatever place you go— it will be cheaper. Alternatively, cous cous is just wheat flour pressed into semolina— it can be used in roasties

DeepIn40 · 25/12/2018 19:56

So.... I never did find any semolina despite all suggestions. I went for couscous in the end, the roasties were nice albeit a bit to tough (the size the couscous!).

Where oh where is the semolina.....

I tried

Tesco
Sainsbury's
Morrison's
Holland and Barrett

??????
