If you can personalise other aspects, like the colour of her kit then why not her skin tone?

You cannot customise those elements though, just the size of the image, apply filters and change the name.

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 17:22

@ChesterGreySideboard your “if” is important. You can’t personalise the kit colour - unless the site isn’t optimised for mobile, or I’m being particularly blind!

You can change colour of the overall fabric, and you can change the size, angle and position or the complete cartoon image. You can also change the text - wording, size, position, font.

But from my phone, I can’t see anywhere where you change the specific elements of this image.

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 17:24

@JudasPrudy but that’s the OP saying she thinks the marketplace Zazzle only allow it! Not Zazzle saying it. And the OP is wrong - there are other products even from the same seller with African American images.

nessus · 19/12/2018 17:25

YANBU. But I am someone that gets excited about being able to change skin tone on WhatsApp emojis!

Try having a look at culture / people pages on websites of companies so see just how little diversity is reflected. Just the norm sadly.

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 17:25

Why are you making an account to tweet them
They’ve solved your problem, it’s a small trader who has neither the resources nor the obligation to provide an image of every possible race / mix of races for their home designed products.

What do you hope to gain from tweeting at them?

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 17:27

Ah, @JudasPrudy I think I totally missed your point! Blush
You were saying that the OP was being ridiculous in saying that and you (or Zazzle) would be offended at receiving it.

Got you, and with you 👍🏻

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 17:28

@nessus but this seller is one who does have African American cartoon products.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 19/12/2018 17:31

What do you hope to gain from tweeting at them?

Who the heck knows, I doubt even the Op knows. Surely if she wants to send a message she should contact the seller of the product. However she thinks this is unreasonable because it's extra effort compared to ordering one with a white person on it.

I am sure if she messaged the seller they would be only too happy to accommodate the request, but then the Op wouldn't be able to claim they were racist and discriminating Hmm

Singlenotsingle · 19/12/2018 17:34

So this designer has only produced images of white girls with the bags. Aren't there any other designers who HAVE produced pictures of black girls with bags? Maybe some designers only use black girl images.

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 17:41

The OP is correct that people of colour are woefully under represented generally - and specifically in this designer’s one product.

What’s the answer?

To berate this seller who actually does have African American images in her portfolio, just not this image?

To enact legislation that forces Zazzle to show every human product in a minimum of the 4 most populous races of the world?

What I would like to see Zazzle do, is mailshot all its designers and say “heads up guys: 23% of our country is not white. From a survey we did, it seems that 15% of our customers are not white. What does this mean for you?

  • we, and you, are missing 8% of our potential customer base
  • we get x complaints per day about lack of alternative skin tones
  • and money aside, this isn’t right!
  • we would like to address this by encouraging you to offer multiple ethnicities in your designs - and to help with this, where a product listed is identical to another except for skin tone, we will make no additional charge for listing that product
vuripadexo · 19/12/2018 17:46

Ellisandra

That's exactly right!

But I'm still waiting for KickAssAngel who is arguing that this product is illegal.

ScrantonTheElectricCity · 19/12/2018 18:13

I never claimed to be clever but like most people on this thread I saw there was several very simple solutions and recognised that your complaint was unfounded. So which solution are you going to apply to the situation because if the answer is none of them then I stand by my comment you were just looking for something to shout and complain about.

moredoll · 19/12/2018 18:31

I don't think YABU.

Certainly call out the designer on twitter, and ask the Commission for Racial Equality for it's view on Zazzle's stance. If Zazzle is making money from hosting these designers you'd think it has to ensure they're operating within the law.

Last census in 2011 81.9% of the UK population was white. So 1 in 5 is non-white.

PickledChutney · 19/12/2018 18:32

YABU - do you expect them to have pictures of people of every possible skin tone and nationality? Why would they when you can add your own?

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 18:34

@moredoll what do you think about the designer selling other artwork that does have African American images?

Do you think all designers should have to include all races? Or just certain ones - if so, which? Should US designers (as this lady is) include First Nations people’s?

CoughLaughFart · 19/12/2018 19:27

When H&M sold those sweatshirts with the monkey comments on, people complained to/boycotted H&M, not the producers. I know that websites are different, but surely neither the producer nor the website should be promoting a product that's for white people only?

Who are ‘the producers’? Do you mean the actual factory that manufactured the tops - which will have been approached by H&M to produce a design THEY chose, and which will have had zero input into it? That receives designs and makes them to the client’s spec?

If you can’t comprehend that this is totally different, you’ve seriously misunderstood the issue.

MaisyPops · 19/12/2018 19:36

Yes sellers should have more diversity.

Complaining to Zazzle and essentially suggesting it's not that hard to Google an image of a black girl is silly and needlessly confrontational with a company not linked to the product.

ihatehoney · 19/12/2018 19:38

@ScrantonTheElectricCity ooooh thanks, I get it now OP. Yeah I agree that's definitely not good!

Ellisandra · 19/12/2018 19:54

@ScrantonTheElectricCity you came back to the thread, but you didn’t confirm whether this seller offered the option to change the kit colour but not the skin colour. Because I can’t see where they do that.

And what do you think about this seller offering other images of black girls on the same site?

ChesterGreySideboard · 19/12/2018 20:45

Sorry, I thought the op said that you could specify the kit colour.

moredoll · 19/12/2018 20:49

@moredoll what do you think about the designer selling other artwork that does have African American images?

I think the point is that we live in a diverse society and images should reflect that. It is a fact that the people who are most concerned by immigration are people who live in areas which are less diverse. Reflecting the make-up of society helps people appreciate that white is not the norm. Of course it's good that the designer shows that in other images.

This applies to the UK where racism is an issue but not the massive problem that it is in the US. I have no idea how America could start to tackle its racism.
