My brother and SIL are very well off and are the worst to buy presents for. They have very specific tastes in EVERYTHING. I've tried buying them expensive lovely things and I've also tried handmade things and everything in between. All receive the same shrug reactions and it's just so annoying. It would be nice to get them something that actually bought a smile to their face for once.

(Also despite their shit reactions to everyone's gifts they are nice people and always buy AMAZING gifts for everyone)
Wtf do I buy?! They are expecting a baby soon, maybe I should just get something for the baby!? But I know they have very specific taste in baby clothes too. Nightmare

Wtf do I get!

Do they not say thank you at all? Do they literally just shrug and don't even smile? They'd be getting nothing from me ever again.

BakerBear · 19/12/2018 09:49

Surely the simple answer is ... nothing!

They come across like they dont really want gifts. Some people are like this, they have such particular tastes in things that if anyone ever buys them anything it will never be exactly what they want.

Santababyclaus · 19/12/2018 09:50

John Lewis voucher

hibbledibble · 19/12/2018 09:50

Could you get John Lewis vouchers? That way they can choose what they want for the baby. Or ask them?

BreakYourselfAgainstMyStones · 19/12/2018 09:51

I would suggest to them not doing gifts next year.

If not just get vouchers.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 19/12/2018 09:51

Vouchers for where they like. Or a charity goat, depends how pissed off you are and how pointed the present is meant to be.

AtrociousCircumstance · 19/12/2018 09:51

Not sure how they can be lovely and such rude arseholes at the same time...

Vouchers. And make sure you shrug when you receive their gifts.

Santaispackinghissleigh · 19/12/2018 09:52

An Oxfam goat.

UhUhUhDennis · 19/12/2018 09:52

I'd just start giving token gifts like chocs or biscuits etc. Sounds like a waste of time and money to keep trying to please them. Or start giving vouchers for places you know they like if you feel like you need to give something relevant then they can buy what they want
They sound rude though!

gamerchick · 19/12/2018 09:52

Vouchers or alcohol.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 19/12/2018 09:52

John Lewis voucher yes that.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/12/2018 09:52

Oxfam goat or similar.
Wine/chocs etc.
Voucher
And a big gift for yourself of not giving a shit.

lau888 · 19/12/2018 09:53

Sponsor a reindeer or a tree, in their names. x

ChoudeBruxelles · 19/12/2018 09:53

PIL are a nightmare to buy for. Fil is so fucking ungrateful. I only ever buy vouchers now. Got theatre vouchers this year.

loubluee · 19/12/2018 09:53

Is your budget very different to theirs?

dangerhighvolt · 19/12/2018 09:53

@TeaPot496

Quite often they leave all the gifts they don't want when they go home 😂

OP posts:
Disfordarkchocolate · 19/12/2018 09:53

Apparently I'm hard to buy for, despite dropping hints that I love certain books, afternoon tea and Susie Watson stuff. John Lewis vouchers are one of my favourite things, something there for every taste.

SantasBassoon · 19/12/2018 09:58

They clearly don't want presents, but you've been ignoring their very unsubtle hints. Why?!

Why not make them happy by not giving them anything, or a token gesture of some booze or a promise of a good dinner out in the new year.

LaundryHepburn · 19/12/2018 09:58

Quite often they leave all the gifts they don't want when they go home

That's so rude! I'd ask them if they want to stop with the gifts, because they never seem to like what they get.

AnnabelleLecter · 19/12/2018 09:58

You could buy the loveliest things in the world it won't make any difference. It's how they are.
Don't bother trying to get them something perfect, they're ungrateful, nothing will be right and you already know this.

PrettyLovely · 19/12/2018 09:59

Wow they sound really rude.
What they have in money they lack in manners.

I wouldnt get them anything.

Micah · 19/12/2018 10:02

I admit i’m also a nightmare.

What i like for presents is fairly mundane stuff that i hate spending money on, and a bit nicer than the bog standard.

So socks. I had a nightmare time persuading people i actually did want socks for christmas, but now i get enough to last me all year. Soft, quality every day ones in nice patterns :)

Chocolate. I limit my chocolate for obvious reasons, cadbury, green and black, nestle et al have all gone to shit so I rarely eat chocolate at all. A proper box of hotel chocolat, montezuma etc is a real treat and i savour it, and feel completely justified in telling everyone else to fuck off and eat the cheap stuff as it’s mine!

Expensive soap, ethically sourced products like bee wraps to save on plastic, quirky gift sets like flavoured coffee or hot chocolate syrups. I’m after a reusable takeaway coffee cup this year...

Janecon · 19/12/2018 10:04

Hotel vouchers or vouchers for a meal in a nice restaurant.

TeaPot496 · 19/12/2018 10:05

Wow @ the leaving of the discarded presents!

Well they've made it obvious so I'd ask them outright exactly what they'd like (if anything).

JulieBindelAteMyHomework · 19/12/2018 10:09

Leave the present buying for in-laws to your partner. I don't buy for my in-laws and he doesn't buy for my family. Life is too short to waste time on ungrateful people.
