Is it wrong to correct someone who uses the wrong there, their or they’re

Or Your and you’re?

I know of a few friends who use the wrong ones and I’ve always had the urge to correct them, but never do because I feel it would make me look like I am being mean.

What do other people do?

I'm a stickler for using the correct grammar but I wouldn't dream of correcting anybody else's.

It would indeed make you look mean. And a bit of an arrogant twat, tbh.

Trills · 18/12/2018 21:40

Depends on the context.

Will they feel better or worse if you mention it? (and do you want them to feel that way)

3boysandabump · 18/12/2018 21:40

I correct my dh and dc but not anybody else although i really have to bite my tongue

Jsmith99 · 18/12/2018 21:41

Obvious spelling and punctuation mistake’s annoy me intensely, but I ususally manage to bite my tongue and mutter to myself in despair about standards of education in basic literacy.

Nobody likes a pedantic smart-arse.

PositivelyPERF · 18/12/2018 21:42

I think your doing nothing wrong by correcting there mistakes. 😁

SylviaAndSydney · 18/12/2018 21:42

I’d only correct my children, anyone else would be rude.

ThePinkOcelot · 18/12/2018 21:42

Yes you would be. It bugs me too when people use the wrong there, they’re or their or whatever. However, wouldn’t be so rude as to correct someone.

Hazardswan · 18/12/2018 21:43

It is wrong. I can't say anymore then that as I am afraid you will end up wanting to correct me!

It makes people self conscious Blush

Lovingbenidorm · 18/12/2018 21:45

I agree it’s a total wind up but I think pointing it out to friends would be offensive.
I would point it out to close family (along with mispronunciations) in a private setting to save them looking like twats

Faerie87 · 18/12/2018 21:47

@PositivelyPERF 😂 your funny!

I don’t ever correct anyone, I’m too polite! And I know my English skills are not always 100%

The only time I’ve done it was at work when a colleague asked me to double check a letter he was sending out to a customer x

PositivelyPERF · 18/12/2018 21:47
Grin
PlainVanilla · 18/12/2018 21:48

Could we also add correcting 's when used as a plural?
It is just ignorance.

PositivelyPERF · 18/12/2018 21:51

My Sil constantly makes memes on Facebook with fucking there instead of their. I sometimes agree with her sentiment and respond along the lines of “you’re right and I think they should walk their dog.....” 😉 😇

Polkapjs · 18/12/2018 21:53

I know someone well who does it all the time. I daren’t say anything as I know she’d be upset

Redcrayons · 18/12/2018 21:54

Unless I've been asked to proof read then no. No matter how much I want to.

Polarbearflavour · 18/12/2018 21:55

What about at work?

MaisyPops · 18/12/2018 21:56

Unless it's worl or something you've been asked to proof read then don't correct.

Personally I find pendants who love correcting other people horrendous bores. Maybe because I teach English so ibsoend my day correcting SPaG so couldn't really give a damn if there are errors/typos out of work in informal contexts.

Christmasisforadults2 · 18/12/2018 21:57

Are there no people on mn who are dyslexic?
I see posters correcting people all the time, usually when disagreeing about a topic.
It's rude and unnecessary- and to do it to friends, well I would be careful that they don't have a few things you do that they don't like.

MrsPinkCock · 18/12/2018 21:59

I do it to my best friend.

He’s incredibly academic and has a brill sense of humour so just finds it funny Grin wouldn’t do it to anyone else though.

Faerie87 · 18/12/2018 22:00

@Polarbearflavour - if a colleague asked me to double check their work I tell them, especially if it’s letters that are going to customers.

To be fair I never knew the difference while I was in school, it was only when a smart arse corrected a post on Facebook when I decided to look at the correct usage xx

OP posts:
Cuddlykitten123 · 18/12/2018 22:01

No I'm crap with them, help me remember what use to use when!!

PositivelyPERF · 18/12/2018 22:03

My middle child is severely dyslexic and an shocking pendant. I think it’s because he puts a massive effort into using the correct SPaG, though he would never correct those he doesn’t know well enough. His friends love winding him up. 😁 I do think it’s incredibly important to him because he works so incredibly hard at self teaching and is worried he’ll misremember the correct SPaG if he reads the wrong words, iykwim.

Lettermethis · 18/12/2018 22:03

@Jsmith99

Obvious spelling and punctuation mistake’s annoy me intensely.

Mistakes doesn't need an apostrophe.

Sincerely, from pedantic smart-arse.

PositivelyPERF · 18/12/2018 22:03

and an shocking pendant Blush

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2018 22:04

Ah, at work I would & do correct grammar & spelling. It's important to get it right.

I thought OP meant on Facebook or something because she mentioned her friends.
