AIBU to have the TV on all day long

I literally turn it on when we get up and then I have it on all day long. I'm at home with my 10 month old and I use it for company. The radio or podcasts just don't have the same comfort for me, despite being more interesting Hmm

Am I alone?

@Celebelly but the TV isn't blaring? 😂 do you think I make my guests scream over the telly to talk to me? It's just a bit of background noise

And for all those complaining about screens and the damage they're doing to us, you should probably get off mumsnet and go and sit outside with the nature to prevent your eyes going square

bringincrazyback · 18/12/2018 20:11

Oh, the piety from some of the anti-TV posters on here. Reminds me of the people who used to say the only programme they allowed their children to watch was Blue Peter. Personally I'm convinced some of this stuff is class-driven.

OP, YANBU as far as I am concerned (mainly because I'm the same. lol)

themoomoo · 18/12/2018 20:11

but why do you need something visual if you have people round? you want visual, go out to the theatre or cinema together. or a specific come round to watch this with me. Not come round for a chat whilst holby city drones on in the background.
really bad manners

gladiatorgirl · 18/12/2018 20:13

TV on most of the waking hours to counteract hubby's tinnitus but if someone comes round then TV goes off. It drives me daft some days and I long for the days before daytime telly. Light years ago Iknow!

Junkmail · 18/12/2018 20:14

I occasionally put something on Netflix while I’m cleaning during the day, just for some background noise to make chores go faster. But it’s not an automatic thing. I watch very little tv these days—used to have it on all the time. But I can’t be fucked with the noise anymore. I don’t even have the radio/music playing except in the car. I like my silence now.

Zoflorabore · 18/12/2018 20:15

I hate the TV with a passion but live in a household of TV lovers so when I'm on my own which is every week day I never ever have it on. Drives me crazy.
The adverts for sick donkeys etc make me sad and the news is depressing.
JK makes me want to throw the tele out of the window.
And I'm the one who pays the TV license Grin

grissini · 18/12/2018 20:18

Can someone recommend which radio stations at which times are worth listening to please?

Our telly is on constantly. I'm never watching it so it's usually some kids channel or another or Sky News. Or the Disney movie channel. Both my 1yr old and 4yr old dip in and out, will both watch a whole programme they're interested in then potter off to do colouring/ reading/ playing in their bedroom/ etc. Both have walked early and like a good run about. We spend a lot of time out at the park, soft play, library, swimming. Both can entertain themselves with toys. I have friends who don't have the telly on a lot and their kids are obsessed with it and can't entertain themselves at all. And friends who rarely have it on whose kids aren't fussed at all. I think it depends on the family/ child a lot. Mine have no problems sleeping (mostly!) or sitting down for meals where they can't see the tv.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/12/2018 20:25

Always on here.
Partly my tinnitus so struggle with silencd
Party growing up in a haunted house so struggle with what I might hear in the silence

I will put music on but never the radio, too much talking and adverts.

All CBEEBIES etc in daytime, not sure where these images of zombie kids come from though, mine certainly never gets that still. He'll Potter off to get the appropriate toys and they'll normally play on the telly table. There's very few shows where he'll sit and fully watch as he's happy pottering.

He does comment off tellies are "broken" but as a point of fact rather than complaint.

We spent a lot of time in hospital when he was tiny, I sowed the telly bug...

Neverender · 18/12/2018 20:32

Turn it off...

Atalune · 18/12/2018 20:32

Op what are you interested in?

grissini · 18/12/2018 20:33

@Atalune I think radio4 sounds good. I like debates, politics, topical issues etc

squadronleader87 · 18/12/2018 20:35

OP have you tried listening to podcasts? There are some really fascinating ones out there. I like In Our Time, Serial and Women's Hour.

I also like Radio 4 for cultural stuff and Radio 2 for chit chat.

PersonaNonGarter · 18/12/2018 20:38

You know this is crap - that’s why you started a thread on it.

GogoGobo · 18/12/2018 20:39

Yabu. Imagine how much crap your child is drinking in from the "background" noise. Adult themes, soaps with shouting/row drama programs with stressful storylines, news, adverts adverts adverts, charity appeals, starving children with phone numbers flashed up - why on earth would you want your baby/toddler/pre schooler exposed to this?
Get some great playlists/radio 4/selected tv viewing sorted for company - not free flowing daytime tv

Neverender · 18/12/2018 20:57

Grissini why the Biscuit? She's clearly concerned about the amount of time the TV is on...so...turn it off. Have a conversation with your child.

Why does that deserve anything but applause?!

Tanaqui · 18/12/2018 20:57

It’s very hard to have background noise (radio or tv) during a conversation if you have any level of hearing loss. I would always turn it off- including car radio- to make hearing conversation easier.

Neverender · 18/12/2018 20:57

Agree with personanongrata

Russiawithlove · 18/12/2018 20:57

Im a Radio 2 junkie. The only show I dislike is Chris Evans and he is leaving on Fri Smile

Neverender · 18/12/2018 20:58

Radio 4 is amazing btw

Atalune · 18/12/2018 20:58

Radio four-
Dead ringers
The news quiz
I’m sorry I haven’t a clue
Just a minute
Desert island discs
Women’s hour
The long view
Clare in the community

Pod casts
The Adam Buxton podcast
Late night women’s hour

If you like current affairs and Jeremy vine, try you and yours on radio four too.

I fairly recently remembered I love classical ballet scores and so have been listening to tchickovsky! Also I want to like opera so have been trying to educate myself.

In the kitchen I listen to a mix of radio 4 and 6 music.

I want to hear some cookery:foodie ones if anyone has a recommendation?

Lastly TED talks. The app is downloadable and easy to use.

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/12/2018 20:58

I couldn't have the tv on all day but I rarely have it on at all . I love a bit of peace and quiet in the evenings.

Russiawithlove · 18/12/2018 20:59

I'm going to try Radio 4 tomorrow now.

Neverender · 18/12/2018 20:59

And sorry Grissini for not dedicating my evening to read the whole FOUR PAGES of people trying to help you work out what else you could possibly do...when you asked for advice?! Ridiculous.
