AIBU to have the TV on all day long

I literally turn it on when we get up and then I have it on all day long. I'm at home with my 10 month old and I use it for company. The radio or podcasts just don't have the same comfort for me, despite being more interesting Hmm

Am I alone?

@grissini no, it's all screens and had nothing to do with weight. He mentioned lots of studies which have shown children are producing too much cortisol which doesn't get dispersed through exercise and there is a strong rise in cancers etc. I haven't got the studies to hand as I am at my youngest's Carol service, but I can post them later.

(I've remembered it was the AMA who have recently issued the guidance and the NHS may follow suit)

PrincessButtockUp · 18/12/2018 18:12

I can't have it on in the background, I find it too distracting. Radio is ok. Music or silence are best if I'm actually trying to concentrate on anything. But I guess we are all wired slightly differently.

Lettermethis · 18/12/2018 18:16

Urg, no. Doesn't go on until 6pm earliest and off again at 10pm. But each to their own!

Mia111 · 18/12/2018 18:21

Me too with my 10 month old! Grin

Vitalogy · 18/12/2018 18:24

I used to do this, now the silence is the comfort. Constant distraction/stimulus takes you away from being.

Mummadeeze · 18/12/2018 18:24

I have always done this too. I don’t see it as a problem at all. We have it on as background noise and don’t really watch it. When we decide to watch it, we watch it properly. My daughter and I both know how to differentiate because we have always lived like this. We are not glued to it at all.

KoshaMangsho · 18/12/2018 18:27

Well it depends on what you want to hear. We are a no screen (as much as possible family)- kids are 7 and 2. We watch sport and the older one watches the Bake Off final etc. Otherwise no screen, no iPad nothing. The background noise does my head in. It is constant.
Yes the AAP has screen recommendations. And there are studies about children who are exposed to screens and their vocabulary. There was also a really interesting NYT article about how all the Silicon Valley bigwigs are all anti screens. Our oldest did have some screen time as a toddler and we noticed a real deterioration in his concentration even with that. People will have all kinds of anecdotes about their kids who watched TV all day and have PhDs from Oxbridge though so this debate tends to get heated.
Now if you are lonely and bored (and being a SAHM to a 10 month old can be isolating) then we can perhaps help with that?
But I just hate the ambient noise. Personally it drives me nuts.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 18/12/2018 18:28

I grew up in a house like yours. It was a blessed relief to move out and live differently. The tv goes on if there’s something to watch. If there isn’t, it stays off.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/12/2018 18:29

Always have the tv or radio on, I hate a quiet home.

poppoppop100 · 18/12/2018 18:30

You should be talking to your child

grissini · 18/12/2018 18:31

@poppoppop100 Who says I don't talk to him?! I literally talk and sing to him alllll day.

Run along.

KoshaMangsho · 18/12/2018 18:33

But your voice is competing for attention with the noise that’s on. I am doing bath time but I’ll find the studies in question that suggest that this is exactly what the problem is- that your voice/interaction tends to become second best to the more easily digestible passive images on the screen.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 18/12/2018 18:34

It's on all day here. Plus I sleep with it on at night.
Cannot be without noise, especially since my mum died.

My DD doesn't take any notice of the screen though. Her vocabulary is perfect, her speech is coherent and her concentration levels are excellent for a 3 year old.
She's also very active.

I have zero concerns about it.

Do what you need to do OP!
YANBU.

grissini · 18/12/2018 18:34

@KoshaMangsho Yes that makes more sense. I didn't like the PP just assuming incorrectly that I don't talk to my son!

maddiemookins16mum · 18/12/2018 18:35

I used to put it on for bbc breakfast and then turn it down low, it was like having someone in the house. I’d watch the lunchtime news then Neighbours 😳😳, then turn it off until DP got home to watch the news on C4 with dinner (tea etc). It kept me company during those early months.

Lazypuppy · 18/12/2018 18:37

I'm the same its on pretty much all the time when we are home

NerrSnerr · 18/12/2018 18:40

You should be talking to your child

Thank goodness someone has suggested this to the OP. I bet she doesn't utter a word to her child all day!

Costacoffeeplease · 18/12/2018 18:41

I much prefer the radio, particularly 4 extra, I have it on if I’m baking or batch cooking, there’s a wide variety of programmes from drama, comedy to documentaries. But once I stop it goes off, and the tv goes on about 6:30/7pm. We rarely watch anything live but choose from programmes we’ve downloaded

Costacoffeeplease · 18/12/2018 18:42

So if I’m not listening to 4 extra, I have silence during the day - couldn’t bear to listen to the Jeremy Kyle/this morning/loose women crap, even in the background

Lazypuppy · 18/12/2018 18:43

The tv goes on if there’s something to watch. If there isn’t, it stays off.

Friends is always on tv so that's normally what is on.

Lazypuppy · 18/12/2018 18:44

Jeremy Kyle/this morning/loose women i agree with you about those shows, but you know there are more programs than those?

BlueJava · 18/12/2018 18:47

We don't watch TV much and only put it on to watch something specific, then turn it off. So personally I think YABU!

grissini · 18/12/2018 18:48

I watch in this order every day:

GMB
The I have to put up with Lorraine until;
Jeremy Vine on Channel 5
Then maybe I'll put on This Morning but I'm generally out from 10:30-12:00 ish
Then it's on in the background during lunchtime on Channel 4 so something like Four in a Bed or Come Dine with Me.
The baby goes to bed then and I'll be on here or on Netflix.
Then around 3 Come Dine with Me goes on until Tipping Point on 3.
Then The Chase
Then the News
Then baby's bedtime and I'm back to Netflix.

The routine is comforting and boring. And I go out a lot in the afternoons shopping or catching up with friends etc

OP posts:
Ragwort · 18/12/2018 18:49

I have complete silence, I love being in a quiet and peaceful house, much prefer being on my own as well Grin. TV goes on only if I am watching a specific programme, and I can only watch one show per night; I couldn't cope with focusing on two different programmes in the same evening.

But we are all different, do whatever suits you.

Hefzi · 18/12/2018 18:49

What @Vitalogy said.

I have never owned a TV and can't stand watching films etc I don't even watch it through the Internet.

I do have some low tastes in fiction, though Grin
