Looking to take DP, and our 2 children (7 years and 8 weeks) away for a weekend somewhere in the uk early January.

AIBU to think I can do this on £300 ish? That would be just for accommodation. It'd be Friday- Sunday.

Any suggestions? It's for DP's birthday. Or am I being totally unrealistic? Not looking for anything fancy or to go abroad etc...

We often stay in a PI if we go for a city break in the UK. Also stay in them near airports. Never had any issues in them - much better than Travel Lodge and similar ime.

Usually for a weekend we are just wanting a base and spending most of the time out and about, we just need a decent bed and a place to sleep. So, we don't need the benefits of a more luxury type hotel.

Aragog · 17/12/2018 17:39

It depends on your priority - is the hotel break itself that is key, or is a city/location visit more your thing?

40andfeelingit · 17/12/2018 17:45

Ribby Hall - just looked and you can go for £314 weekend of the 11th.
Cottages are toasty warm and clean, free swimming in an ace pool with slides etc. Ask to stay near the leisure complex so you’re not walking too far and you’re sorted x

Bath, bed and breakfast under £120!

AviatorShades · 17/12/2018 17:55

Ooh! So many good suggestions OP. I'm getting excited for you ! Grin

hellswelshy · 17/12/2018 18:17

Try Hoseasons, they often have some brilliant deals in January! They do some really lovely lodges on a variety of sites, I've used them many times.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 17/12/2018 20:57

Love the irony of someone for whom a PI wouldn't be good enough suggesting a caravan.

Vinotinto78 · 17/12/2018 21:05

We have recently done two London mini-breaks as a family of four staying in Premier Inn. Reliable, clean, family-friendly and tons of locations to choose from. And a great breakfast.

www.stayplayexplore.co.uk/

Hope this link works..cheap, good hotels and choice of a few attractions to do over the weekend. Friends have done this and have highly recommended it.

donajimena · 17/12/2018 21:12

Don't forget holiday inn express.
You get breakfast included in the express ones and the family rooms are good. Cardiff is 2 hours away. Free museums here too and the seaside which my Midlands friends love

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/12/2018 21:24

Love the irony of someone for whom a PI wouldn't be good enough suggesting a caravan.

I know! "Don't stay in that crappy hotel where someone makes your bed and cleans your bathroom each day! Stay in a caravan and do it yourself!"

safariboot · 17/12/2018 21:39

Sure. Haven would be in budget but I'm not sure I'd want to go in Jan, the caravan will be cold and ditto the usual seaside locations. Youth Hostel family room is a good bet for a rural location, or chain hotels like Premier Inn or Travelodge might come in budget if you want something closeish to a city or town.

Allabitmuchisntit · 17/12/2018 21:50

Easy. Go on booking.com and filter your search to holiday cottages, apartments, chalets for the dates you want and loads should come up. Enjoy!

OneStepMoreFun · 17/12/2018 22:04

You definitely can. We had a gorgeous AirBnB for four of us for less than that for five nights in Kent. Can't fidn the exact place we stayed - it's sometimes on long temr rental, not air bnb, but loads of places along the Kent coast well within your price range.
Also places like this in Herefordshire countryside

bonfireheart · 17/12/2018 23:13

If you're travelling by train google national rail 2 for 1 - keep your rail tickets and get into many places two for the price of one.

Am also in the west mids and this place is amazing, ideal for young children. Indoor heated pool, jacuzzi and spa. There's an outdoor play area, tennis court etc and a play club on site where u can drop the kids off and have some time to yourself!

I've got a Monday to Friday break at centreparcs in January. It was £319 pounds..... that's a 2 bedroom lodge

defineme · 17/12/2018 23:21

I would highly recommend www.stayplayexplore.co.uk you get a night (add extra nights for a discount price) in a nice hotel like a Marriott with a swimming pool and family entry to 3 Leicestershire attractions including things like Tywcross Zoo, The International Space centre, Twinlakes Family theme park etc for £149

Random18 · 17/12/2018 23:35

We did London a couple of years ago. We stayed in Premier inn and got really cheap train tickets. Family and friend railcard is you friend and you can use Tesco vouchers if you have them.
Haven Burnham inn Sea is good and not far from you but I don’t think it will be open in Jan.
What kind of weekend are you thinking of? Been in the West Midlands you have so much under 2 hours away.
problem is it’s January. A lot of places are shut.

Random18 · 17/12/2018 23:40

I had forgotten about the Elms!!
We had afternoon tea there a few years ago.
Now going to google and see what deals I can find.

DinoDave · 17/12/2018 23:48

Dino - lucky you! My family have a low income so a PI with the breakfast for a weekend felt like a real treat. We visited National Trust places away from home and had an amazing time. Sorry it wouldnt feel good enough for you

JustKeep no I really didn’t mean it the way I’ve realised it sounded!

I like a PI well enough - they’re my first port of call when we need a room somewhere. We’ve also had some nice enough stays.

But if I had X to go on ‘holiday’ i just wouldn’t consider a PI tbh. I’d far rather a cottage/lodge/caravan which have more space, with onsite facilities etc if for more than a night (or 2) and would probably be the same price in January!

Nothing to do with PI not being ‘good enough’ - different preference is all.

bonfireheart · 18/12/2018 06:39

DD10 and I quite often "holiday" in UK cities by staying at PI. The prices some hotels charge is ridiculous. PI is great value.

bonfireheart · 18/12/2018 06:41

But i know what u mean about "preferences" I wouldn't consider self catering as being on holiday, I'm on holiday i don't want to be cooking! Then we did it once and it was ok:)

lostandconfusedd · 18/12/2018 06:44

I did haven holiday for £265

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 18/12/2018 06:50

Darwin forest in Matlock and their sister park in Ashbourne are lovely. They feel like they are in the middle of nowhere but aren't really. There is a free pool or soft play centre depending which one you book. And the locdal towns have a nice park, cafes and lots of places to visit.
There is one at Darwin forest on the 11th for £315 but you could play with dates and location. I just had a quick look for you.
Have a lovely time

Interesting to see views on hotel vs selfcatering.

We havr a 2 year old and I would never choose a hotel because a) we would all have to share one room and b) we would have to sit in the room in the dark for 2 hours while she naps.

I love self catering holidays (although I wouldn't pick a caravan in winter)
