Looking to take DP, and our 2 children (7 years and 8 weeks) away for a weekend somewhere in the uk early January.

AIBU to think I can do this on £300 ish? That would be just for accommodation. It'd be Friday- Sunday.

Any suggestions? It's for DP's birthday. Or am I being totally unrealistic? Not looking for anything fancy or to go abroad etc...

We did a weekend in the top end caravan at Haven for about £180 a couple of years ago.

We were only 40 miles away from home so didn’t lose much time on travel, and we just did a shop on the way there.

It was the first weekend they opened - maybe March?

It was nice. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery even if you’re just watching movies in a warm caravan while it pours down outside!

amazing place.
depends where you are though

Fontofnoknowledge · 17/12/2018 14:05

Airbnb at half the price in some amazing places. 6 of us stayed in a beautiful water mill in Shropshire in Feb for 3 nights at £100 per night. Gorgeous!

1hello2hello · 17/12/2018 14:06

Another one who says Premier Inn is your friend. Two nights in a family room last weekend of Jan in the centre of Manchester is £135. Leaving you money for a celebratory meal in Chinatown! The science & industry museum is free and fab for your 7 yr old.

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 17/12/2018 14:06

Haven etc does mega cheap breaks in january

TheDogsMother · 17/12/2018 14:09

You will definitely find something great on Airbnb for that budget. Many hotels do good deals during Jan/Feb. One of our favourites are The Pig Hotels. Mid week Jan £145 per night inc breakfast and they give you a bottle of wine to take home included in the price. We were given a room upgrade too. The hotels are boutique style and in fab locations.

Mammyloveswine · 17/12/2018 14:11

We did mon-fri at center parcs in feb last year for 329!

DinoDave · 17/12/2018 14:13

You can definitely get a caravan/lodge/cottage for that.

I can’t understand people saying a PI - PI to me is where you stay for a night or two out of necessity (like far away day trip or visiting relies). I would never think of a PI as ‘a holiday’.

Aridane · 17/12/2018 14:14

What is the cost of transport likely to be?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 17/12/2018 14:17

I literally just booked three days at Presthaven Sands for £186 last weekend in March. Ties in nicely with mother’s day.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/12/2018 14:18

Premier Inns are perfectly nice and many are located in cities or tourist areas, and have family rooms for little or no extra cost, which is good when on a limited budget.

You also get free breakfast for children in the attached restaurant when an adult pays, so can be a good option for families.

Although as the OP has said nothing about what sort of holiday she would like or where she is in the country, PI may or may not be a good option.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 17/12/2018 14:20

Dino - lucky you! My family have a low income so a PI with the breakfast for a weekend felt like a real treat. We visited National Trust places away from home and had an amazing time. Sorry it wouldnt feel good enough for you.

LongtimeLurker29 · 17/12/2018 14:22

I have got a weekend in Edinburgh, flights and air BnB came to 250 in total so it's doable. That was for 2 adults 2 children x

MissMotoGP · 17/12/2018 16:12

So much advice. Thank you! Checking out premier inns as we speak :)

I'm in the West Midlands but can travel anywhere that's two hours ish of Birmingham. Sorry I should have included that in my OP. I'm willing to do anything really!

First weekend in January, family room at the youth hostel in Stratford upon Avon, £38...

SleepingBooty · 17/12/2018 16:22

We did this Q Hotels Warwick Castle weekend last year. It's a nice hotel with a pool and includes 2 day tickets to visit the Castle. It was about £250 for our family of 4 and includes breakfast and dinner. I'd recommend it.

OnceUponAGiraffe · 17/12/2018 16:28

This place has a pool and is well under budget, just for starters.

Forest holidays have sites all over and have deals. They have a hot tub which is nice.

Pootlebug · 17/12/2018 16:43

Loads on Airbnb. Put in your dates and people numbers, filter on max price per night, choose 'england' as place and see what takes your fancy! I put £100 per night max for last weekend of Jan just to see and there are so many lovely places

Birdsgottafly · 17/12/2018 16:46

Price apartments, they are really cheap out of season. So are B&Bs.

Hostels can be hit or miss, I've had good experiences and breaks ruined because of a lack of sleep and the cleanliness.

Imalittleelf · 17/12/2018 17:04

Whitemead in the forest of Dean has apartments for about £211 for 3 nights.

There is a swimming pool onsite, more for playing in than doing lengths but lovely for children. It's a small version of centre parcs. Forest of Dean is lovely if you have a car, lots of places to visit and explore. Pm me if you like the look of it and want some ideas of places to go :)

newplacenofriends · 17/12/2018 17:18

I'm doing 4 nights for £225 in snowdonia. This is for an entire cottage using airbnb

He11y · 17/12/2018 17:30

Bluestone Wales is lovely and just a little over your budget.

He11y · 17/12/2018 17:31

Ah, Bluestone isn’t within two hours of Birmingham.
