I write to you by candlelight. Had new electric oven fitted today by well known high street retailer. In the process the main fuse board was blown. Left with no heating or electricity. As the fitters left there was no solution offered. AIBU to think a company of such a size should offer better care? Off now to empty freezer and fridge and ask neighbour to boil kettle. We have an electrician coming tomorrow to fix problem for £450 any helpful thoughts welcome.

Does you home insurance cover home emergencies?

GertrudeCB · 16/12/2018 20:49

Complain to the retailer and demand that they foot the bill.

LIZS · 16/12/2018 20:50

Surely it should have just tripped the kitchen circuit? Have you tried isolating it and resetting?

RCohle · 16/12/2018 20:53

Was it currys? When they tried to instal our new cooker they managed to break our boiler and we were without heating or hot water for days. They were wholly unapologetic.

Zbag · 16/12/2018 20:55

Im going to guess it's either currys or JL?

Bringbackthestripes · 16/12/2018 20:58

I hope the retailer are footing the £450 bill and compensating you for the loss of food/heat/light.
If not, try a very public tweet naming the retailer. That generally gets their attention.

Thanks for swift replies. I will contact the company. Apparently the “motherboard” has gone according to electrician. Yes insurance is a possibility. It was more the service or lack of that was concerning. May not reply again as phone running out If charge

It's AO isn't it?
Their fitters don't give a shit and neither does their customer service. Awful company.

Hopefully, it'll get sorted quickly for you.

Mascarponeandwine · 16/12/2018 21:08

Try tweeting. Why should you claim on your home insurance and have the premium go up next renewal

skippy67 · 16/12/2018 21:08

Op has confirmed it was Curry's

Yabbers · 16/12/2018 21:09

Motherboard on a fuse box? Never heard of that one.

TruffleShuffles · 16/12/2018 21:13

Is the oven too powerful for your electrics? We had that issue when we had a new kitchen recently, we had to have the wiring to the oven changed. I’m not sure if anyone is really to blame if that’s the case.

Janek · 16/12/2018 21:16

Leave your freezer - it will easily stay frozen until tomorrow if you leave the door closed.

Ariela · 16/12/2018 21:21

Are you sure they've not just tripped the kitchen circuit? Have you tried ensuring the kitchen circuit is off and resetting ?

blackteasplease · 16/12/2018 21:22

Hotel tonight and charge them for it!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 16/12/2018 21:23

domestic electricity supplies don't have motherboards. what an odd thing for them to say.

LIZS · 17/12/2018 19:09

Hope you have had it resolved today.

seventhgonickname · 17/12/2018 21:49

Have you looked at the fuse poardyourself as unless it is very old wiring it should only have knocked out whatever is onthat fuse. The main switch can trip out but you should be able to turn it back on yourself.

Sitranced · 17/12/2018 21:56

Can't you just turn off the cooker off and switch the tripped switch back on?

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/12/2018 00:13

I paid to have a new electric oven fitted by Curry’s. They came with the new oven, tested the circuit, said there was a fault with my electrics and walked out leaving me with an oven sitting unconnected in the middle of the kitchen floor. I called an electrician who carried out the same test, said it was perfectly ok and connected the oven. He told me that the fitters working for these companies have had just very basic training and are not qualified tradespersons.
