I'm not engaged but always fantasies about my perfect engagement and how it would happen/if I'd cry/what the ring would look like etc.

So tell me, how did you get engaged?

OP posts:

My (now ex) DH had invested a modest sum of money in a British movie (that never saw the light of day). The premier was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow and was a full evening dress affair. After watching the (quite frankly awful) movie and draining the place of champagne he took me outside and said, “I’ve got something for you in my sporran”. As I sniggered he got down on one knee and took out a box with a beautiful platinum and diamond solitaire. Of course, I was mad about him and said yes. He hadn’t thought further than that and we ended up celebrating in a dodgy curry house. We married but ended up splitting up because he turned out to be gay, but we still get on really well, and reminiscing about the engagement still makes me smile.

My husband wanted to marry me 3 months after we met and spent a long time thinking about where to propose apparently. We were living in different states in Australia (me in Queensland and him in Victoria) during our courtship. He came to visit me - we had an upsetting time as I was going to postpone my move to Victoria by 6 months (which worked out to be the best in retrospect). I was crying and he started to cry and then proposed! We went to an amazing antique arcade the next morning and found the perfect sapphire vintage ring. We have been married for a year and three months and are very happy.

TagHeuer · 17/12/2018 03:56

Our engagements rings were identical men's TagHeuer watches. I've worn mine every day for twenty-six years, wearing it now as I write. DH dies a few years ago and I still have his watch.

Mine was pretty much a business deal. We weren't even dating.

We had gone to the same boarding school, so had lived together for a few years in the same boarding house, so knew each other well enough and were friends but not really. Then when we were 19 one night we were hanging out with everyone else from school and were the only two hungry so went to go get food and that was the first time we really spent time alone together and talked and bitched for two hours and then got onto the topic of marriage and Dh was like 'we should get married because of x,y,z. It could benefit both of us.' And I was like that's a good point. And so we meet a few days later and sat and went over the details and each others terms, went to cartier and brought a ring that afternoon (which was later replaced with something vintage that I liked more) and bam we were engaged. Got married with the big society wedding 7 months later. Still married almost 31 years later with no plans of bowing out any time soon.

DH and I LARP. Basically, two or three times a year we get kitted out as a ragged sorcerer (him) and a dwarven cannoneer (me) and beat the seven bells out of 150 or so likeminded people for a weekend. Excellent fun, highly recommend it. We play on different teams, because we enjoy trying to assassinate each other. We also have a fully licensed demountable mediaeval tavern in which everyone gathers after the game formally ends for the night. It's usually packed to the gunnels and incredibly noisy, but the beer is cheap, plentiful, and cold.
So, last October, I'm in the tavern with the rest of my squad getting nicely rat-arsed on cheap beer, when DH and his squad come in and I totter over to say hello and catch up on the day. Eventually his mates go to get their drinks and DH and I are just standing there chatting when he leans down and goes "Hey, will you marry me?" I said something awfully romantic like "All right, then,"
After some great lot of snogging, I turned around and snagged a friend and basically screamed in his face "OH MY GOD I'M FUCKING ENGAGED"
Word obviously got around, and the night ended up with the same friend at one end of a trestle table, me at the other, working our way through twenty pints. DH was doing similar with his squad and the keg that the barman dragged out from somewhere.

We were married in May...the weekend after a LARP.

Meal at a restaurant owned by a friend (we now would kill each other), champagne, flowers. When we got home, I gave her a jewellers bag with two rings in it. Proposed and said this ring is for you, the other is for your son who is as important to me as you are.

barbiegrl · 17/12/2018 05:19

We had a very brief whilwind courting, two weeks in he took me to dinner at a very swanky place and I just KNEW he was going to propose-he didn't, in fact he had a hard time even looking at me let alone talking to me (I had gotten all dressed up-make up,hairdresser etc. I was gutted. The next night he wanted to see me again-I was full of cold and just three on a hoodie, he took me to a beach bar and he asked me to marry him-no ring,no getting down on one knee...the day after that he was supposed to leave, we went ring shopping then went down to the beach and he got down on one knee, 5 steps away there were three old codgers-looked like something out of last of the summer wine! All the time he was fielding calls from relatives who wanted to wish him bon voyage. That evening we had a meal with my mum and his parents-he turned up with his suitcases, and left my house to go to the airport. I woke up the next morning with a ring on my finger and an absentee fiancée. A few weeks later I flew to join him and we haven't been apart since-16 years in August

We got engaged last month- 3.5weeks in to a 4 week holiday, so any thoughts I had of him proposing had disappeared. We were on a small island just of the coast of Mumbai, we’d been to see the main tourist attraction there, and then walked up a big hill, where it was much quieter. He got me to sit on a big cannon (not a euphemism) so he could take a photo, then he came over and said to close my eyes because he had a present for me. Then he held out a black plastic cat shaped ring (Tatty Devine Halloween Cat ring) and asked me to marry him - he couldn’t get down on one knee as I was so high up. He has since replaced the ring with a (beautiful) formal one, but the cat ring feels like the proper one!

SimplySteve · 17/12/2018 07:06

Not Gharapuri by any chance @MittensForKittens123 ?

MittensForKittens123 · 17/12/2018 07:09

@SimplySteve nope it was Elephanta- there are two big cannons at the top of the hill if you can brace it past the monkeys to walk up there! I also saw a dolphin following the ferry on the way there Grin

MittensForKittens123 · 17/12/2018 07:11

@SimplySteve I feel like such a bad tourist right now - just looked up Gharipuri and realised it’s the proper name for Elephanta Blush

WillowPeach · 17/12/2018 07:15

We got engaged last night and it was perfect. We’re on holiday in Germany at the moment and he took me up to Heidelberg Castle. The court yard was completely empty because it was late but we could see the whole of Heidelberg and the lights from the Christmas markets below. It was wired because we were literally in the clouds.

He told me he had a video on his phone he had been meaning to show me. A video of our very much spoiled kitties and he was saying in the video, what are you trying to tell me? Cats went to a piece of paper on the floor which said Mummy will you marry our Daddy? And then he got down on one knee and said will you marry me?

His voice was shaky and I was saying omg you’re doing it. We hugged and kissed and he had a wet knee from kneeling in the snow but it was perfect. I felt and still do feel like the luckiest woman in the world.

SimplySteve · 17/12/2018 07:20

Oh it's a fabulous place indeed. Congratulations on your engagement and my, what a stunning place to do it. I've only visited two I rate higher.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 17/12/2018 07:26

My DP took photos every day for almost a year of him, or the kids holding signs saying 'marry me' or marry daddy
He got quite brave and managed to put signs right next to me whilst I was sleeping.
He got friends holding signs saying 'best man' or 'join our married club'
He got his sister in on it too!
In my birthday he passed me the ipad and told me to press play. He turned all photos into a 20 min slideshow to all of the songs that are important to us!
First half of the video was our photos throughout our time together, the second half were the proposal photos.

amysaurus87 · 17/12/2018 07:41

We'd been together 7 years, living together for 3 years. I came home from Slimming World and found him on one knee in the hall way with Bruno Mars ' Marry You' playing in the background.

I said yes and we had pizza and champagne for dinner.

He always said it would be a random Tuesday...and it was.

I found out later that he'd been running all over the place, first to our friends to collect my ring (she designed and made it), then to his parents to let them know and then to mine to ask permission!

We've been married 20 months now and have a beautiful 8 month old son

AndBabyMakes3 · 17/12/2018 16:01

We had discussed getting married a lot over our 9! year relationship and it always seemed like he wasn't quite ready but I knew he was committed to me so I was trying to patiently wait... he passed his PhD viva in the January and discussions got more serious and I realised he was ready. We talked about setting a specific date for our 10 year anniversary so technically we were engaged. It was a leap year so I planned on proposing to him on Feb 29th, printed off loads of photos of the 2 of us and made a little box to put his ring in. Then bottled it on Valentine's day and couldn't wait any longer so gave him the box as an extra Valentine's present and got down on one knee as he opened it. He put his head in his hands and said oh god repeatedly....then I asked if he would marry me and he said alright then and that was that. Opened a bottle of champers I had hidden away and proceeded to get very drunk. Kept it a secret for over a month which was very special and then when we told people a lot didn't believe us!! 2 years one baby and another on the way and never been happier!! Grin oh turns out he had been planning on formally proposing to me but I beat him to it!!

stellavisionandunderstanding · 17/12/2018 16:47

In front of Angkor Wat's on the bridge leading to the temple, after we'd run a half marathon. My fingers had swollen so much that I couldn't wear the ring for ages afterwards. I'd picked out the ring before hand but didn't know when he'd propose.

Sophaloaf · 17/12/2018 17:15

We were on our way to Chester zoo for the day with DD for our 5 year anniversary.
I was peed off I was making the picnic and getting everything ready in a rush and dd shouted 'mummy' and handed me a bit of paper and a pen.
I was so busy faffing about I just put it on the counter thinking t was to tidy up until he told me to open it. Inside it said 'will you marry daddy' and little tick yes and no boxes. I turned round and he was on the other side of the baby gate on one knee with the ring!
He says he had planned to do it at my favourite spot at the zoo (we've been a few times) but was too nervous to carry the ring round all day Grin

SimplySteve · 17/12/2018 18:57

I've always wanted to go to Angkor Wat, I'm well jelly @stellavisionandunderstanding
