I'm not engaged but always fantasies about my perfect engagement and how it would happen/if I'd cry/what the ring would look like etc.

So tell me, how did you get engaged?

We was planning a big holiday so I said to him, 'oh if we are going there we could get married while out there'. He agreed, and so that is exactly what we did. Who said romance is dead Grin

TinkerSpy · 16/12/2018 20:18

Clearly a massive boast, but my now-DH proposed at the Grand Canyon while we were on a 6-week road trip across 11 states.

We'd hiked away from the crowds so it was just us and the stunning scenery - I turned to take a picture, turned back with a huge grin on my face and I couldn't believe he was on one knee, with a little box!

I couldn't stop giggling. He'd picked a vintage Edwardian ring that was absolutely stunning, I couldn't believe he had such good taste!

Very happily married now :)

PS We returned to the Grand Canyon for our wedding - just us! Great memories.

Bastardingcough · 16/12/2018 20:19

He took me out for dinner, but hadn't bothered to book anything. Once we'd (finally) found a pub with a table, he pushed a ring box across the table and said "There you go then."

Jubba · 16/12/2018 20:20

I actually just got engaged last weekend!! We’ve been together 10 years. Have 2 children. It was me who never wanted to get married actually. He’s wanted to for years

He took me away to London. The first night we got back and he’d set the rings (he got me 2. No idea why!!). One is an eternity ring. On the side table. Gave a beautiful speech got down on one knee. And proposed. We had the BEST weekend we’ve ever had. Michelin star restaurants. Cocktails! West end theatre. Spa. Oh it was truly wonderful and I’m very very blessed.

lastqueenofscotland · 16/12/2018 20:21

I’m not engaged but my friends DH came in to the bedroom drying his balls with a towel and said “it’s been 5 years shall we get married?” Grin
It’s one of my favourites cause it’s very them, very laid back

Jubba · 16/12/2018 20:22

And I adore my ring. We’re actuwlly getting one made. So he told me this was a temporary ring. Apparently it’s a big thing now. According to the jewellers!! To buy a temporary one. We’ve got such horrifically different taste. That I’m still surprised how much I adore it. It’s a marquises diamond with a halo. . With pave diamonds. And an eternity ring.

CMOTDibbler · 16/12/2018 20:22

We were in bed, and he just said 'shall we get married?'. We spent a few weeks choosing a ring together, then told everyone once we'd sorted what we wanted to do wrt a wedding

RubiksQueen · 16/12/2018 20:23

I got engaged a few weeks ago. At 33,000 feet in first class on a plane 💖 He had the ring and it was the one I'd seen and mentioned in a shop very far from home and he went all the way back in secret to get it (which involved various subterfuge and 2 international flights!)

Couldn't have been more perfect.

EmUntitled · 16/12/2018 20:24

We had been dating about 4 years, living together etc. We went to a family gathering (his family) and a few people asked whether we had plans to get engaged etc. We had discussed it quite a few times before and knew it was in both of our long-term plans. In the car on the way home we discussed it and decided we should get engaged. We went and chose a ring together the next day to "make it official".

I wouldn't have really wanted or expected some big grand gesture. We both knew we would get married so it was really just making a decision on when to start planning the wedding.

EmUntitled · 16/12/2018 20:25

@Jubba
Presumably the "temporary ring " is popular with jewellers as you end up buying 2 rings, so they are quids in. I don't really understand the reason otherwise.

cptartapp · 16/12/2018 20:26

Under a palm tree in Mauritius. He'd planned to ask the year before but my DF had died. We had been together nine years by then, we married the following year and that was seventeen years ago. I still have a piece of the palm tree!

TheEgyptianKing · 16/12/2018 20:28

It was my 25th birthday. DH had just got his vintage sports car back from the garage after having it restored and asked me to go for a quick drive. He stopped down the road on the beach and asked me to get something out of the arm rest. When I opened it, there was a box in there. I opened it and asked me to marry him. I said yes. The ring was incredible - he’d designed it himself, and had just picked it up from the jeweller.

diamondofdoom · 16/12/2018 20:28

@TinkerSpy that sounds so magical!

Yours is the best GrinGrin

Longdistance · 16/12/2018 20:29

It was our one year anniversary together, he proposed to me in Antigua, which is where we got my ring.

Eatmycheese · 16/12/2018 20:29

A deserted beach in America - Pacific beach in north west US at sunset.
A poem he had written and some prosecco and glasses were waiting for me in a heart he’d drawn on the sand.

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 16/12/2018 20:29

We had been together 8 years and decided to spend 4 months travelling around America, first stop was going to be Vegas and he said "well whilst we are we should just get married" my reply was "yeah might aswell" ☺ we had talked about marriage before but wanted to travel first so we hit 2 birds with one stone!

Chocolate85 · 16/12/2018 20:30

On holiday in the most beautiful place ever, but in a private little corner so everyone wasn’t staring, with our children singing a little song. It was truly magical and one of the very few romantic things he’s done in 16 years. I chose my ring a few hours earlier which annoyed me but the twat was adamant he’d get it wrong if he chose and luckily the actual proposal made up for it.

diamondofdoom · 16/12/2018 20:30

@Jubba oh wow, I'm jealous! I'm so glad you had a great weekend, love a good spa Grin

@lastqueenofscotland hahahaha that's brilliant! My fave story yet. I can definitely think of a few people I know that would do this!

Me: I'd like to get married
Him: OK, let's do that

weeblueberry · 16/12/2018 20:33

Been with DP, got two kids together and have a house together. Recently he said ‘next year is ten years since we met - shall we get married then?’ I said yes. And then we went on eating dinner. Smile

RagingWhoreBag · 16/12/2018 20:33

We were chatting in bed one night. He said he’d like to propose properly and I said I don’t need a big proposal, and that I had my mum’s ring that I’d like to have resized to wear when we finally did it. So he knelt by the side of my bed and asked me. Then he popped into the bathroom and got my eternity ring off the shelf and came back to do it again with a ring.

We fell out over it, because he told his friends at work about it the next day and implied that he’d planned it and had bought me a ring. I was annoyed that I’d have to lie about the ring when I saw them that weekend, and I was sad that our little moment wasn’t ‘impressive’ enough for him, so he’d had to embellish it for other people by pretending it was something more formal, not just a lovely spontaneous conversation.

We split up since, and then got back together, so I don’t know if it even still counts, but it was perfect at the time.

I don’t want the big public proposal, bells and whistles stuff, just me and him. Sad

PooleySpooley · 16/12/2018 20:33

My OH flew home for 24 hours as he was given a day off before he was deployed for 4 months somewhere he would be unable to contact me and he sent me a text in bed when we were lying in bed asking if I wanted to go and buy a ring today.

It was pretty romantic as he had said he would never get married again - although it took him another 5 years to actually marry me Grin
