I'm not engaged but always fantasies about my perfect engagement and how it would happen/if I'd cry/what the ring would look like etc.

So tell me, how did you get engaged?

  • been with dp ten years lol.

Neither of us are flashy engagement story types. Smile

namechangedtoday15 · 16/12/2018 20:36

It was crap and I had dreamed of a romantic engagement. Went away for my 30th birthday. Eve of birthday, gorgeous restaurant, 7 course meal. After every course I thought "this is it, he's going to ask'. No. Had to walk thought flood lit grounds to get back to room. A-ha this is it. No. Got back to room, thought he was waiting for my actual birthday so started to get undressed. Said I was just going to give my mum a call and he said "wait a minute, will you marry me?". I was half dressed with my phone in my hand! The complete opposite of romantic. Turns out he'd spoken to my parents and told them he was proposing so knew they'd think I was phoning to tell them the news!!!

Bastardingcough · 16/12/2018 20:37

It wasn't hugely romantic, but we've been together 21 years, married 17years, so he must be doing something right Wink

peachgreen · 16/12/2018 20:42

We knew we were going to get married from the day we met so had talked about it often. About a year in, he suggested we start looking for a ring so that he could propose when we were ready (I'm a jewellers' daughter so he knew I would want to be involved!). We chose the stone (a beautiful peach sapphire) and worked with a designer to design a setting. They told us it would take about 8 weeks to be finished. Sneakily DH had asked them to say this and actually he collected it a fortnight later. Took me to my favourite place in the world and proposed there. Even though I knew he was going to propose I had no idea it was coming at that moment because I assumed the ring wasn't ready. We then had a lovely day of being engaged without telling anyone - had a lovely lunch in the Shard, went to the theatre etc. It was perfect - romantic, intimate and surprising. And I still have never seen a ring I like half as much as mine.

Huntawaymama · 16/12/2018 20:45

Out walking in one of our favorite beauty spots he got down on one knee. I knew it was coming, I'd been suspicious when he'd taken dd to the the shopping centre twice in the space of 3 months since he never shops and if he does we shop together. The day before Id asked his mum to have dd so i could go christmas shopping and suddenly he wanted to come with me and said we'd have a walk first. The whole walk he was acting fishy which turned out to be him looking to see if anyone was watching 😂 he wanted to come Xmas shopping as he hadn't been able to find the perfect ring on his own. I'm so glad he didn't have a ring first cos I've tiny fingers and always wanted something different to the usual solitaire diamond and he'd have got the wrong thing

abcriskringle · 16/12/2018 20:47

Mine was totally unexpected which made it all the more enjoyable. It was a sunny bank holiday and we went out for a walk to a local area that is very pretty with lovely views. Sat on a bench to enjoy the view and DH asked "do you like this spot?" Thought he meant to have lunch as we'd been discussing grabbing a sandwich and eating outside due to good weather. I said it was and he promptly got down on one knee, whipped out a ring box and asked me to marry him! I said yes and burst into tears - fairly sure a family walking past us at that point thought we were arguing as they looked over in a concerned way! It was nothing spectacular but felt brilliant and I was very impressed at both how he had managed to keep it a secret and also at the lovely ring he had chosen, somehow managing to get the correct size!

PickettBowtruckles · 16/12/2018 21:01

He surprised me with booking a weekend away in a town we’d been to and really enjoyed before. We went for dinner and he suggested we walk the long way back to our hotel via the beach. It had just started to rain and I protested saying we should take the cut through alley instead! He insisted and we did the beach walk, it was dark and the rain had got fairly heavy by now but he still got down on one knee in the sand bless him. I was only just 18 and honestly terrified how our parents would react - thankfully everyone was very excited and we had a 5 year engagement before actually getting married.

MaMaMaMySharona · 16/12/2018 21:02

I got engaged earlier this year - my DP and I had talked about marriage but he’s incredibly slow with everything so I thought he’d never ask (I was actually preparing to ask him Smile)

We went on holiday and he proposed at the bottom of a waterfall, I was completely stunned! We didn’t tell anyone for about a day - mostly because we didn’t have signal but also because I quite liked having it as a secret Grin

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 16/12/2018 21:04

We met on holiday in Turkey and got engaged in Zante a couple of years later.

We’d talked about it a lot but I didn’t think it would happen. He’s older than me and to be completely honest at this point I wasn’t sure what the future held.

Sat in a restaurant on the beach, gorgeous evening and he asked me if I would ever marry him. Realised he as serious and said yes. He obviously hadn’t planned it though as no ring, so we brought matching silver friendship rings and never replaced them until we got married three years later.

Shoxfordian · 16/12/2018 21:10

I surprised him with a trip to Paris for his birthday and he surprised me by proposing on our hotel roof terrace looking at the Eiffel Tower

WhatelsecouldIbecalled · 16/12/2018 21:11

We went away for the weekend to a little cottage in Wales. Went for a walk down the beach it was freezing and only just us there. Turned away to take a picture and when I turned back around he was down on one knee in the sand. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The ring he proposed with is the one I have worn ever since and have had my wedding band made to fit with it. We are both beach babies so was the perfect setting for us. He was actually planning on proposing months earlier in Edinburgh but got sent away with work for 4 months instead (military) but actually this way was perfect. Grin

AmandaBuffamonteezi · 16/12/2018 21:21

We got lost on a hike on holiday. DH had planned a surprise picnic in a romantic place and we were trying to find it but somehow got lost. I made a dramatic comment about being Frodo from lord of the rings walking to Mordor and he shouted back that he was the one with the ring. Then got all flustered and said "Ah fuck it" then proposed.

We eventually found the right place and it was absolutely incredible. He decided to propose again. I said "Ah fuck it" before saying yes.

Engagement photos taken of us looking sweaty and sunburnt with scratches and bruises from falling on the hike drinking warm champagne are up in the house. They are awful but I love them!

Poshjock · 16/12/2018 21:23

DH has been married twice before and told me he'd never do it again. One night, at the end of February, we were talking and I said "if you asked me to marry you, I'd say yes". He was genuinely shocked, I joked that he'd have to wait until a leap year so I could ask him and he said if I did he'd say yes. Then it occurred to us that we'd actually just got engaged! We picked a date there and then and decided we wanted to marry abroad and picked New York. We had an outline plan for the wedding that night. A few days later we bought a ring and went to a National Park because he wanted to do it properly. We had fish and chips on the way home.

Alarae · 16/12/2018 21:30

He took me for a surprise weekend away to the lake district, about six hours drive away.

As soon as we got to the hotel he took out a picnic basket he had prepared and led me to a private lake a short walk from the hotel.

He got down on one knee there and asked Smile

Unfortunately even though it was August it was blowing a storm and torrential rain... Makes the story better though!

trinitybleu · 16/12/2018 22:01

Within about 2 weeks of us getting together we both said we knew this was it. Spent 10 months looking for rings. Both saw it in the jewellers window and said "that one" at the same time. Wore it that weekend but as no one else knew (I was v young) we hid it for ages but still, officially engaged after 11 months.

Still together 20+ years later.

Neverunderfed · 16/12/2018 22:11

We were due to go out for dinner on the 1 yr anniversary of the night we first got together (already living together) and he was at work during the day. He came home and I was sat on the sofa doing my make up etc. He went off to shower etc, came back, dropped on both knees in front of me with a bit of a stammer and asked me to marry him. 😂😍 Said he had planned to do it over dinner but was too nervous and didn't think I would like the attention, which was spot on. So very laid back, and low profile.

We got married 6 months later and are now three kids in and having our 10 yr anniversary next year.

Neverunderfed · 16/12/2018 22:11

I'm not a crier, no tears at engagement or wedding.

cunningartificer · 16/12/2018 22:13

Asked me what I was thinking (was thinking this is going nowhere I should finish it though I adore him he clearly doesn’t feel the same), then on one knee asks me to marry him. Clearly misreading stunned expression says ‘don’t say no’ and spends an hour telling me why I should say yes. I really enjoyed that hour. Smile

DramaAlpaca · 16/12/2018 22:15

DH isn't the romantic sort at all but he wanted to ask me when I'd least expect it. He took his driving test one day, came home & told me he'd passed, then in the next breath asked me to marry him. He knew I wasn't going to be expecting it then. We went ring shopping the next day. He knew I'd want to choose it myself as I'm very fussy when it comes to jewellery. We're still together 30 years later.

ImogenTubbs · 16/12/2018 22:21

On one knee at midnight in the foot-deep snow in the middle of Lords Cricket Ground (right next to the wicket) a couple of weeks before Christmas. He had planned to ask me the following week but we'd been invited to a friend's wedding there and he said the emotion of the moment just took him! There was no one else around - we'd left the wedding and snuck onto the pitch. It was that winter when there was major snowfall in London in December and running through the virgin snow in the dark was pretty unforgettable. He never did get round to getting me an engagement ring though... Grin

BeanTownNancy · 16/12/2018 22:25

We knew from pretty early on that we were going to get married. We'd discussed rings in conversation (I wanted him to surprise me when he eventually did propose but felt strongly that I didn't want a solitaire, which is the norm so I felt I needed to tell him). About 10 months after we met we went to the zoo for a day. It was raining heavily so there was noone around. We got to a quiet spot and there was a Peacock perched on a glass wall and I wandered over to get a closer look and when I turned back around he gave me the ring. He didn't kneel because he was standing in a big puddle, but it was surprising and intimate and sweet and I loved it.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 16/12/2018 22:35

I was away for work on the other side of the world over our anniversary, and he showed up at my hotel room and asked me. To say I was surprised would be the understatement of the century!

He told me that he had been planning to propose on that day for the best part of a year, so when I announced I was going away for work he just had to adapt the plan Grin it was amazing!

QueenofmyPrinces · 16/12/2018 22:45

When it was my birthday my DH told me he’d ordered a present but it hadn’t arrived yet but it should be there the next day. I asked him where my birthday card was and he said he’d left it at work. I was not impressed.

Anyway the next day I was sitting in the living room when he came home from work and as he walked into the room he asked me whether I wanted my card or present first. He knew I would say card because I always do.

Anyhow, I opened the card and on the front it said happy birthday to my fiance and my brain felt really confused. I opened the card as automatically as you’d open any card and inside in big letters it said, “What do you say?” and then when I looked up he was just standing there with an open jewellery box with the ring in it.

I know it was done in our living room but it was completely unexpected and really, really romantic. I’m really glad there was no cheesy big grand gesture because the normalcy of the living room makes it even more special Grin

BettyBitchface · 16/12/2018 23:07

I told him, "we are getting married next Saturday". I borrowed £200, then I went to the registry office to get a special licence and arranged two witnesses.

Sorted.

Picknickers · 16/12/2018 23:29

We were having a rare but pretty big row q. I sarcastically said " I guess that this is the point where you ask me to marry you." He said " Great idea. Marry me." I stormed out of the room, he followed me and said " Seriously. Will you marry me?" I'm a stubborn mare and didn't say yes until 9 days later Grin
