Don't kids get enough stuff on the 25th?

My nephews and niece now think it's their right to have gifts on the 24th as well.

Where does it end?

Yes I know AIBU!
Yes it's probably been done on here already in the last few weeks!

FindingDotty yp I've just said it yourself, it's just giving them a couple of small presents they were already having, but a day early. How does it put financial pressure on parents when it's not buying extra gifts, just spacing them out?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/12/2018 08:11

Wasnt that one person were ?

I think you have a talent for hyperbole

Smile

I hope everyone on here has a lovely Christmas though, it can be a hard season

LaurieMarlow · 17/12/2018 08:12

It is a shame to not think of the pressure it puts on families who can’t afford it though.

I can't do much about the inequality of the world I'm afraid. Do you apply the same logic to family holidays? Expense tech? Big family houses? Lovely days out?

There are much bigger pressures on those struggling than a few quid on a Christmas Eve box.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 17/12/2018 08:13

Aw, you're the type of person who thinks books are boring. Poor you - I hope one day you realise they're not, though it sounds like it's too late.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 17/12/2018 08:16

Oh no Rufus! It was definitely more than one! But I will go with the accusation of hyperbole. It is just so British to take offence at that, and I love it! (Homesick) so enjoy your Christmas Eve boxes! Yawwwwwwwwn 😂

HeadfirstForHalos · 17/12/2018 08:17

I think it's better to do something a bit boring relaxing Christmas Eve evening anyway, anything more exciting than a film/book/colouring/board game and they will never sleep! That's kind of the point of the relaxing bath, pjs and film etc to wind them down a bit in the hope that everyone will get some sleep 😊

Childrenofthesun · 17/12/2018 08:18

Some people may have been doing it for years, but you can't deny it's only become a widespread trend recently. I'd never heard of it when I was a kid and you have only seen Christmas Eve boxes for sale in the shops for the last few years.

JacquesHammer · 17/12/2018 08:19

than they are that I accused them of being boring fuckers

Says the person spending time posting about how boring other people are.

Imagine having such an empty life...

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 17/12/2018 08:30

Oh it's ok. jaques it only took moments. I am a quick thinker and a quick typer. I can quickly get back to my very important life. I am currently choosing cotton pajamas for my children. Exciting!

JacquesHammer · 17/12/2018 08:43

I am a quick thinker

Shame not so much with the reading eh?

I feel so sorry for you. I mean is your life so paltry that you really have to mock other people to feel superior? Have you thought about exploring that further, it must be miserable.

JacquesHammer · 17/12/2018 08:45

I love the idea that my Victorian granny who baked treats and left them as a surprise on the hearth for her 13 siblings - many of whom were working 12hr shifts in a mine from age 13 btw - was a chavvy purveyor of tat

Love reading this!

My great-grandmother did Christmas Eve gifts when my father was small.

Damn these modern customs!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/12/2018 08:47

I dont generally pay attention to what other people do

I haven't seen much in the shops but to be fair its mot something i would notice unless it was right under my nose

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/12/2018 08:48

were

Accusation!

Well it certainly wasn't intended as that

Supposed to be a jokey comment but obviously missed the mark

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 17/12/2018 08:50

I'm in my mid 30's and when I was a child we were always allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve, which was always pyjamas or a dressing gown and a book which we would then read together at bedtime. It was nothing to do with "greed" or "rampant consumerism". It was just a little family tradition that I loved and so decided to carry on when I had my own DC.
I understand it's not for everyone but what I don't understand are the posters getting so worked up about what other people do. If you don't want to do a Christmas Eve box don't do one. We choose not to do Elf on the Shelf but I don't get angry with other people for doing it!

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 17/12/2018 08:50

Aww Rufus, I knew you were joking!

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 17/12/2018 08:53

Oh Jacques, I love you too. ❤️

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/12/2018 08:59

Oh thats a relief were Grin

They’re not worked up. They just like to think they’re just that little bit better. It’s a particularly tiresome MN “thing”.

Shednik · 17/12/2018 09:09

We had a tradition of new pyjamas and a book on Christmas Eve before this became a thing. DH's parents did the same forty five years ago. I thought it was lovely so kept it going.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 17/12/2018 09:20

Excuse me, chavvy?

DS pyjamas are from John Lewis, thank you very much.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 17/12/2018 09:21

Oh Lonny thank fuck for that.

LaurieMarlow · 17/12/2018 09:59

I don't even get the criticism that it's boring and unimaginative.

Because chocolate and a DVD is a boring way to spend an evening?

Not to my 4 year old it isn't. I'd be a touch worried if he was pressing for something more exciting.

Because lots of people do it?

What like Christmas trees, puddings, wreaths, carols, nativity plays, roast dinners, crackers and reading The Night Before Christmas (like a good mumsnetter Wink)?

Most of our Christmas traditions are shared and then we tend to personalise them round the edges.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 17/12/2018 10:11

You would be a touch worried if your child wanted something more exciting than a dvd?

If you want to do your little Shitmas Eve box, go ahead. No one cares

Uh huh. You care so little you spend time posting to say how little you care Grin

Oh bless
