To HATE the whole idea of Christmas Eve boxes

Don't kids get enough stuff on the 25th?

My nephews and niece now think it's their right to have gifts on the 24th as well.

Where does it end?

Yes I know AIBU!
Yes it's probably been done on here already in the last few weeks!

Meh. I'm in my late 30s, and we always got new pyjamas and hot water bottle cover as kids, so it's not new.

stoplickingthetelly · 16/12/2018 19:53

I like christmas eve boxes, but we keep ours very simple. Dc share one box and it just has pj's, hot chocolate sachet each and some sweets or popcorn. Don't see the point of adding more such as dvds because we have loads on sky, Netflix and Amazon.

FestiveNut · 16/12/2018 19:53

I like the idea of new pyjamas at Christmas every year, too. Not festive ones, so they can be used all year. Pyjamas are always useful.

missfliss · 16/12/2018 19:53

Why do you think the pyjamas only get worn once?

TeaAndBisquits · 16/12/2018 19:53

We use it to get the kids to have some down time before going to bed on Christmas Eve.

They share a box and it contains hot chocolate, marshmallows, new pyjamas and a Christmas DVD.

There wasn't any Elf on the shelf or Christmas Eve box when my dc was little and I have to say I wish there had been.
I miss the little person excitement these days. I loved all that stuff, used to do reindeer footprints and all that kind of nonsense for her to find on Christmas day.
I have already told my dc that if she has kids every Christmas must be spent with us or she will be disinheritedWink

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 16/12/2018 19:54

Yet another thread about what other people do. If you hate them, don't do them. It's a really simple concept.

They're not new. My Christmas Eve box is over 70 years old. DS gets a book, Christmas PJs and a bath bomb.

Neverunderfed · 16/12/2018 19:54

Pmsl at the disposable pajamas 😂

Cubrrt · 16/12/2018 19:55

I always got new PJs on the 24th.

And I didn't outgrow them overnight either.

missfliss · 16/12/2018 19:55

rufus that is hands-down the best elf ever

HolesinTheSoles · 16/12/2018 19:55

Never heard of it! I know some European countries traditionally open one present on Christmas eve (and on the 7th or 5th?) but not an entire box on xmas even then more on xmas day surely?

ShowOfHands · 16/12/2018 19:55

My Victorian granny did it. No box but treats on the hearth on the 24th. We do it too. My children don't get heaps of gifts on the 25th and we spend £3 on a book and decant some hot chocolate/bake treats on the 24th. It is not consumerism or diluting the magic or expectation. It's tradition and makes us very happy.

And yes there have been at least 4 threads already, all equally derisive of other people's choices.

Hoopaloop · 16/12/2018 19:56

Just another excuse to buy wanky plastic tat.

Blueemeraldagain · 16/12/2018 19:56

Why on earth would you only wear pyjamas once? I can see why you think it’s wasteful nonsense if you believe that!

ShadyLady53 · 16/12/2018 19:56

We all got new pyjamas on Christmas Eve as kids round here so that we’d look nice in our Christmas morning pictures 😂. They were worn many times and were always in the next size (usually out of M&S).

I just hate all the pressure that is put on parents in general these days and how Christmas has become so racked with consumerism and pressure.

YellowPirate · 16/12/2018 19:56

If you don't like it, don't do it?

We have a home made box, pyjamas (avoid fleecy ones so that they can be worn all year), hot chocolate and stockings/santa plate etc in ours. We all love it!

MilkyCuppa · 16/12/2018 19:57

The box is filled with stuff we have on Christmas Eve anyway. Pyjamas, socks or slippers, hot chocolate, snacks, a story book (same book every year), “tickets” for a Netflix film, and a game (usually one that we already have). Adults get pyjamas and a bottle of wine Grin

MrsStrowman · 16/12/2018 19:57

I thought the boxes contained a film, Christmas PJs and hot chocolate, we used to do this as a family after Christmas Eve carol service way back in the eighties just not in a box. I don't see how this is any different, if you don't like it don't do it

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/12/2018 19:58

I’m pretty ancient but we always got new Pyjamas at the end of Christmas Day. Moving that to Christmas Eve actually makes even more sense. They are a practical gift so doesn’t seem that problematic really.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 16/12/2018 19:59

I don't see the issue, DD gets one every year - contains the same stuff I got on Christmas Eve many moons ago - it's just presented in a box.

Couldn't get wound up about it tbh

ShowOfHands · 16/12/2018 19:59

LOL at wearing pyjamas once. When people do the "I don't get it" schtick I assume they're being disingenuous and tutty but apparently, some people really don't get it.

Thesearmsofmine · 16/12/2018 19:59

We do it, new pj’s(worn all year and then passed down) and hot choc are the only new items in it. It also has our copy of Tge night before Christmas, Father Christmas plate and glass, his key and reindeer food(birdseed) to sprinkle outside.

SnuggyBuggy · 16/12/2018 19:59

I'm hoping if this hasn't died by the time DD is old enough to want one we can adapt it. Our family has a DVD we watch every Christmas Eve and I wouldn't object to some nice hot chocolate. Maybe a Christmas scrapbook we could look over and add to.

I don't get buying Christmas PJs that you can only wear in December

Iruka · 16/12/2018 20:00

When I was little Christmas Eve boxes were designed as a ritual to get over excited kids to calm down and go to bed at a reasonable hour. New pjs, meant kids didn’t argue over getting ready for bed, a new book or dvd and hot chocolate, involved sitting down quietly.

All got a bit overblown now.
