To ask whether you would use this ‘best before’ icing?

15.08.18. Royal Icing. Was hoping to use it for my Xmas cake. It is best before, and it’s really just for me and DP (cake probably a bit too alcoholic for DS 16 months).

What do you think? What’s your cut off point for best before?

I wouldn’t ever check the best before on sugar, it can’t really ‘go off’ it’ll be fine.

I'd use it, in fact, I have used more out of date icing quite recently! It was fine. Enjoy your cake!

If anything it just won’t roll and be a bit crumbly. Sugar was put into things to preserve them (where condensed milk comes from) so it should be ok.

BB is a quality guide - so you'll come to no harm however old it is.

Sugar 3 months out of date wouldn't even cause me to blink.

Busybusybust · 16/12/2018 14:15

it will be fine - use it.

Imnotaslimjim · 16/12/2018 14:15

Is it still sealed? If so it will be fine. If it's open make some up and taste it first as it may taste a little stale.

Thank you. That’s what I was hoping to hear Wink

Check whether it has egg in it. Proper royal icing does, though I suspect the ready-made kind does not.
