Working in Retail over xmas

I'm dreading it. Not done Xmas in retail in many years. Going to be working a few hours boxing day any other retail staff dreading the Xmas rush.

You have my sympathy OP. I've done it in the past. The job itself was fine, it's the customers that think it's fine to treat you like dirt that's the problem.

Darkestnight · 15/12/2018 22:14

Exactly that's what I'm dreading. Some customers don't realise we're all in the same boat. Had one today be rude (swearing) so I just refused to serve her and she had to join another big queue.

Tbf some retail staff staff offer terrible customer service too. I don't know if it's a reaction to being treated badly by customers.

I worked in Boots and John Lewis years ago including Xmas, I enjoyed the buzz and loved to give good customer service.

I feel for you OP. I only worked retail once, over Christmas and it was vile. No intention of doing so again!

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2018 22:26

DD will be working on Boxing Day and the 27th. As there are no trains I will have to take her and collect her.

Darkestnight · 15/12/2018 22:27

Yes some are not good at customer care but I like to treat customers nicely and not be sworn at due to something out of my control.
But most customers are lovely and leave with a smile on there face which I like to see as I know I'm doing my job well.
One customer tonight had me in fits of laughter and it was just nice to see. But no reason be rude to staff who are doing there job but some staff don't care. But it's hard to smile all the time and sometimes I'm just quiet but obviously still serve my customers.

Worked retail for many years always dreaded christmas just think of the money. Customers will always be arseholes and expect the earth if they get difficult thats what managers are for.

louiseaaa · 15/12/2018 22:29

Working xmas eve and the day after boxing day as we're shut boxing day

First year. Enjoying the buzz. It helps that the store don't play Christmas muzzak.

Lornielou86 · 15/12/2018 22:31

I feel you pain I work in catering ConfusedGrin

Polarbearflavour · 15/12/2018 22:31

Some customers are rude/nasty/aggressive and think that they own you - because you work in a shop earning minimum wage.

I couldn’t work with the general public any more!

Darkestnight · 15/12/2018 22:33

Exactly but little do they know I'm over the minimum wage by quite a bit Grin

I don't work in retail but the nature of my job means January will be fucking manic, looooooooong days, home after kids are in bed. It's crappy but loads of jobs have cycles. And fwiw I'm working 27 and 28th.
