Facebook Posts about unable to pay for shopping so the lady behind paying...?

WhatsUpHun · 14/12/2018 22:23

i keep seeing posts on FB saying things like

I was in SUPERMARKET around X yesterday eve and was at the scan and go check out ready to pay when I entered my pin incorrectly 3 times blocking my card. There was a lady next to me who saw what happened and asked if I was ok. I explained what had happened and without question she put her bank card into the machine and paid for my shopping. I told her I would transfer the money straight into her account and she said no and would not give me her details to do it. She said merry Christmas. And walked off. I would love to find this lady even if it’s just to show my appreciation as she didn’t have to do what she did. I am very grateful for what she did. There really are some amazing people around

but i cannot work out if this is some kind of spam? thats going around, and whats the point of it? (unless its trying to get people to be nicer to each other?)

Just drove past a bloke with blood pissing from his head on a main road. Went back to him, really confused, called him an ambo and waited till they arrived. Number of cars who were ignoring him was ridiculous...he wanted my name & number, nope. Not going on shitbook either.

SimplySteve · 15/12/2018 10:53

I'm now parked outside Tesco, disabled woman just fell coming out the store. Happily she was surrounded by people within seconds. She's had people stay with her until her taxi arrived too. Oh. It wasn't her taxi, it was someone else's. The someone else just paid the driver to take her home. Brill.

I want to know why GreenKangaroo was CARRYING £185.
Why would you have that much cash on you?

WorraLiberty · 15/12/2018 11:04

TherightsideofHERstory your Tesco post cracked me up Grin Grin

MarklahMarklah · 15/12/2018 11:19

To be honest, I'd drop Rihanna's her new single/Ariana's new video. Straight into the bin.

CecilyP · 15/12/2018 12:21

Me too, Trills. It is an unusual amount to have in a purse in an age of card payments. I would only have that much cash on me if I had withdrawn it to pay for something specific.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 15/12/2018 12:24

I want to know why GreenKangaroo was CARRYING £185.

It's obvious, isn't it? It was so that they could hand it to someone 'in great need' who they hadn't even engaged in conversation with.

Doesn't everyone carry a large wad of cash for such an eventuality?

Polarbearflavour · 15/12/2018 12:29

Well I walked past a homeless person so I gave him the shirt off my back, my car keys, my bank details so he could use my ISA and also my house keys so that he could move in,

Mouseville65 · 15/12/2018 12:30

I tried to pay £6 for a guys milk bread toothpaste and other basic items in the petrol station the other day and the cashier refused to let me - it became very awkward 🙈

She basically said he was in the night before buying booze whilst bragging some gullible mug would pay for his shopping the next day 'because they always do' - this made me think and it made me kind of sad that nice people are screwed over.

I didn't share it on Facebook lol

fibonaccisequins · 15/12/2018 12:30

A similar message is doing the rounds on my Facebook, but it ends with 'I helped her put all the shopping back on the shelves, just took a minute and now I feel great!' Grin Grin my friends are ace!! Xmas Grin

SimplySteve · 15/12/2018 12:31

So unreasonable Polar.

Shoes? Trousers? Bank cards & pins?

fibonaccisequins · 15/12/2018 12:32

Oops, really should RTFT Blush

CecilyP · 15/12/2018 12:34

A stranger did kindly help me out years and year ago when my petrol gauge had got stuck and I ran out on a busy junction in rush hour. I stayed with the car and he went off and got me a can of petrol. Put it in the car and off he went. Nothing sinister just a genuine act of kindness.

This happened to me too on the way to the petrol station. A van driver pushed my car into a side road the went and the drovr to the garage to get me a can of petrol. I told him I didn't have any money on my end asked for his address so i could pay him back but he said no need. He also did all this while managing to make me feel less embarrassed than I felt when it first happened. Didn't seem the type to boast about it on social media either.

Clankboing · 15/12/2018 12:39

My mum gave some money to a lady at a till. The lady started crying and couldn't stop so my mum looked after her for a bit. They then kept in touch and became really good friends. They are good friends even now. It does happen but I don't like it when people blab about it.

Ariela · 15/12/2018 12:46

If/when I pay for anyone else's shopping, it is on the proviso they tell nobody and it doesn't appear on social media.

Ariela · 15/12/2018 12:48

I gave someone my trolley yesterday and it still had the pound in. Off to write my FB post.

Reminds me of the time someone gave me a trolley and I handed over my £1 coin to her, only to find later that it had a foreign coin in.

Orchiddingme · 15/12/2018 12:59

I always give my parking ticket to someone else, and lots of people have done it for me, especially in the hospital where parking charges are outrageous to visit. I don't believe it to be theft in the slightest-you've paid for a slot for one or three hours, and it doesn't matter if a different car takes it half way through. I love it when people give me their ticket and I'm disappointed if I can't give mine away before I leave!

This is not a large act of kindness though, compared with giving randoms money!

OnlyaMan · 15/12/2018 13:12

Some posters may remember the little story sent into Ken Bruce on his Radio 2 show.
An old lady at a supermarket checkout was terribly disconcerted that she was about 50p short when the cashier told her how much she owed. The man behind her paid it for her, and she said to him "I am so grateful. I didn't want to break into a ten pound note".

AspergersMum · 15/12/2018 15:59

I don't like the newish trend of having a child who decides to help the homeless etc so you do a video, show homeless accepting the gifts, put it on youtube and facebook. Do they get consent from vulnerable people before splashing it on social media? Do they heck. It is all about how great the child is. Sadly it is also teaching a lesson about getting recognition for virtue, doing it for the Likes. Even worse, one of the mums I know who did this got donations from everyone first but still took all the glory in the videos for being so good as to buy everything herself.

LittleAlbatross · 15/12/2018 16:13

I can believe that it happens occasionally. There are some wealthy people who are also kind.

Family member lives in Dubai. She regularly posts pictures on Facebook about how she's donating some food or something to some of the workers from poorer countries. Makes me sick really. She's not only exploiting the slave workforce over there for her lifestyle but she's doubly exploiting them for Facebook likes. I wish we weren't related at times

tccat · 15/12/2018 17:12

Only today I was behind an old lady in Tesco who didn't have enough money to pay for her shopping, she was so upset and it made me think of my own grandmother, I decided to help her out of the goodness of my heart and we had all her shopping back on the shelves in no time Grin

ladydickisathingapparently · 15/12/2018 17:47

My son who is 14 has (unknown to me till recently) been buying food for a homeless young chap in town. Do you think I’m allowed to put this on Facebook too? I mean technically it’s his pocket money but I’m giving it to him. Can I take all the credit? Should I be expecting a call from the Vatican anytime soon?

ladydickisathingapparently · 15/12/2018 17:48

Dying at tccat’s comment!

Mummadeeze · 15/12/2018 18:52

Lots of people have helped me when me when I was struggling money-wise. I wouldn’t have minded if they had posted on Facebook. I was grateful and they were kind. People post about what they had for dinner, at least telling people about a moment they had that made themselves and someone else feel good is more meaningful!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/12/2018 19:02

It's the fake ones as well. Video of some guy card being declined or not having enough money to pay for a meal so someone steps in. Which is a nice gesture till realise someone knew to film that whole thing. Not suspicious at all...
