DPD driver stole money from my porch - AIBU?

I left £190 in cash under a plant pot in my porch for a delivery of logs today while i took the dogs for a quick toilet trip (15 mins). I live out in the sticks and no one has any reason to be on my property unless they are delivering something.
My neighbour saw the delivery driver behaving suspiciously, spending far longer than needed at my door and lifting up the pot in question.
My parcel was then put in a weird place next to a drain.
When I got back 5 mins later the money was gone.
OK I know it is not a secure place and I certainly won't be doing it again, but I live in a tiny little village with no through traffic.
I am trying to report to the police, but DPD are not interested.
AIBU to expect them to question the driver?

No not really - he is directly opposite my house, we look out for each other and this is a really quiet road - if someone comes down it you know about it, we are in the middle of nowhere
He just said that he noticed the delivery driver hanging about and wondered why he did not drop the parcel with him as he was out working on his car

Yes Cali i will be doing the same in future. I am an idiot as i could have just waited for the log man but wanted to go into town, i could have done it any time

yabu, you suspect hes the one whose stolen it, however have no proof, and you wont get far with the police, they are understaffed, you will get a letter 10 months down the line saying nothing can be done, as no proof

Ds wallet was stole on an Asda counter with all his birthday money in, caught on CCTV putting "something" into her back 8 months later they interviewed her under caution, she denied it, and no evidence, case close by letter.

Sugarsnappy · 14/12/2018 18:27

That's rubbish. Sounds like it was the delivery driver, but as you say unlikely you'll see the money again. It'll hopefully deter him doing it again though. Maybe one last ditch attempt to DPD and say you have CCTV footage to see if he admits it

Cassimin · 14/12/2018 18:28

I believe you.
Don’t think you’ll get the money back and don’t think police will help you.
Chase it up with their customer services, send emails.
If he does it again they will know he’s done it before.
I often leave my window cleaners money, £20, under a vase in my porch with the corner sticking out.
If a delivery driver came they could definitely see it.

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:28

I don't really want to lie about CCTV as if they ask to see it and i don't have it they'll think i am making the whole thing up.

Yes Cass exactly - he won't be able to do it again - once you can get away with but two or more accusations is too much of a coincidence

I ordered an upgrade to my phone and ir did not arrive at the time it was due. I checked online and the status was delivered. Complained to Vodaphone that the contract would be cancelled. DPD were unable to contact their driver but when they did phoned me to say it was at 27. The driver had made an error and guess who had signed for it? The driver came back at 7 PM to retrieve the parcel for me. ( I knew no 27 well and she couldn't find the parcel when we looked for it)

So do I believe you '- yes sadly I do. My phone was a basic smartphone but could have been a dearer one.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/12/2018 18:33

The reason i am doubly suspicious is that the parcel was left somewhere it's never been left before, almost as if they did not want to draw attention to the fact they had even been near the usual place
Well, either that or someone else moved the parcel to make it look suspicious. Or maybe I’ve just watched too many detective shows.

diddl · 14/12/2018 18:33

"wondered why he did not drop the parcel with him as he was out working on his car"

Why would he though if it's so quiet & usual to put things behind the pot?

cheesywotnots · 14/12/2018 18:35

Did the driver move the pot and put the parcel behind it as they usually do, why didn't your neighbour go over if he thought it was suspicious. It may have been the driver but without proof what can you do, at least you won't do it again.

CaliHummers · 14/12/2018 18:36

It's horrible when your trust gets broken OP. And it's all too easy when you live rurally to trust that people will respect your property. Miserable lesson to learn this close to Christmas!

christmaschristmaschristmas · 14/12/2018 18:37

Are you sure it wasn't your neighbour - trying to cover themselves by saying it was DPD?

diddl · 14/12/2018 18:37

Hang on, your neighbour was outside & could clearly see the driver & the driver still nicked the money?

diddl · 14/12/2018 18:38

I can't help thinking that the parcel was left with the neighbour who spotted the money when he took it over!!

Tinkety · 14/12/2018 18:42

So you’re basically saying the driver lifted up your plant pot & stole your money all the while knowing your neighbour was witnessing it?

JimCricket · 14/12/2018 18:45

I know what you as i am also very rural and would do the same. Bluff you have CCTV

LimitIsUp · 14/12/2018 18:45

I have a similar tale of woe. Dd's designer trainers (a GCSE present) stolen from her locked hotel room whilst on holiday this year. Hotel didn't care ("our staff would never do that") and no restitution

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:47

No that is not what I am basically saying.
the driver was the only one my neighbour saw.
there might have been someone else - i presume his eyes were not glued to my house and he was not outside the whole time
In theory it COULD have been my neighbour.
I don't believe it was.
I will never knwo for sure.

GreenKangaroo · 14/12/2018 18:47

Aye so Police just texted me and said they won't be investigating further.

Hmm. So you call back and insist. They will come out.

Rural policing is actually one of the few areas that is still functional.

So maybe I don't believe you now.

Purplehammer · 14/12/2018 18:48

I smell a rat and it dose’t drive a van.
Might drive a car though.

OutragedERIC · 14/12/2018 18:48

I don't really want to lie about CCTV as if they ask to see it and i don't have it they'll think i am making the whole thing up

As well as it being, you know, morally repugnant to put someone's livelihood at risk by lying and saying you have hard evidence of them stealing, when in fact the only thing you know for certain is that they delivered a parcel.

combatbarbie · 14/12/2018 18:48

I've lived rurally OP, I completly get what you say....it is normal to leave cash....

For those saying the neighbour.... come on really....OP has said the leaving money is normal and never had an issue.

Gotta remember these drivers are paid per delivery, this close to Xmas I'm not surprised if he chanced it....I also gather he's not your usual driver.....I know most around here by face but last 2 weeks it's been a round robbin of many faces on the street delivering.

Can uber rich neighbour lend you some logs....Christmas spirit and all that!!

And invest in a cctv in the porch, we got a cheap one off Amazon that's connected to an app and is motion sensored.

cuppycakey · 14/12/2018 18:49

I cannot see how if the neighbour had such a clear view of what was going on, the DPD driver would steal the money right in front of him.

Clearly neighbour has come up with a very plausible story that OP has swallowed whole.

Heartofglass21 · 14/12/2018 18:52

Are you absolutely sure you left the money there? Sometimes, when I'm rushing around, trying to 101 things in 10 minutes before leaving the house, I can think I've done something, and then realised I haven't. Probably just me though.

I would have left the money with the neighbour in this instance.
