DPD driver stole money from my porch - AIBU?

I left £190 in cash under a plant pot in my porch for a delivery of logs today while i took the dogs for a quick toilet trip (15 mins). I live out in the sticks and no one has any reason to be on my property unless they are delivering something.
My neighbour saw the delivery driver behaving suspiciously, spending far longer than needed at my door and lifting up the pot in question.
My parcel was then put in a weird place next to a drain.
When I got back 5 mins later the money was gone.
OK I know it is not a secure place and I certainly won't be doing it again, but I live in a tiny little village with no through traffic.
I am trying to report to the police, but DPD are not interested.
AIBU to expect them to question the driver?

he is loaded he has no reason to nick money from me

Unless you have regular access to his bank statement, how can you know this? Appearances are often deceptive. And rich people steal believe it or not.

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 17:56

Andthatswhytheycallittheblues lol are you accusing me of stealing my own money?
It was a parcel for my husband - i had no idea it was even being delivered today

Was the money poking out? Visible?

I dont understand why he would walk into the porch & start snooping.

Did he absolutely know you were out?

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 17:58

Read the thread - i already explained.

Police said they are looking into it and will consider dusting for prints but it's been passed to an investigator to decide.

Dusting what for prints? Confused

The pot that you've admitted a lot of delivery people move, to put a parcel near it? Confused

Sounds like the police were just trying to get you off the phone by telling you what you wanted to hear.

There's not a judge in the land who wouldn't agree that the delivery person could have touched that pot and then decided to leave the parcel elsewhere.

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:01

He must have knocked first and got no reply - so i was obviously out.
They always leave parcels behind this pot - its big-ish and it keeps parcels out of sight and is the only thing in the porch.
He then spent a few mins pretending to deliver to make sure i was not in and then swiped it - if you move dthe pot 2 inches it woudl have popped out

AND YES - I know i've been stupid.
I'm not even entertaining it being my neighbour.

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:03

I know Worra - it's a long shot
they said if he has any kind of history or other accusations then it's more likely they'll check but as you said - it's just fingerprints and doesn't prove anything.
Maybe he will feel guilty and put it back haha!

Andthatswhytheycallittheblues · 14/12/2018 18:03

I'm saying YBVVVVU

I also bet for the sake of saving face you'll come back and say driver was caught somehow

Andthatswhytheycallittheblues · 14/12/2018 18:05

Why didn't you give your neighbour the money if he is so invested in your front door activities?

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:06

Why would i do that - i already said there's probably no hope!
You may well be that sad, i couldn't give a monkeys what some random internet people do or do not think - I just wanted to have a consensus on whether i was AIBU to expect more from DPD.
Happy Christmas!

Everyone I know with log burners etc leaves cash out for deliveries, likewise farm shop etc. It sounds very much like driver moved pot to make delivery, spotted cash, dithered uncertain what to do, then pocketed it and put the parcel elsewhere to avoid it looking like he went in the porch. Really dim of him/her though.

LoobyLou1976 · 14/12/2018 18:09

If DPD track their drivers they will know how long he was at your door for. If he was standing about longer than it takes for a normal parcel delivery, then surely some questions need to be asked. I agree with you OP, it looks as though he left the parcel in a weird place in order to distract from the fact that he went near the porch.

OlennasWimple · 14/12/2018 18:09

If you’ve got a witness then the police should prosecute

If you've got a witness then the police should investigate

Pinkyyy · 14/12/2018 18:09

He then spent a few mins pretending to deliver to make sure i was not in and then swiped it

You can't make that accusation, you didn't see it happen. Do you realise you're trying to jeopardize someone's job (at Christmas) because of your speculations?

diddl · 14/12/2018 18:11

"He then spent a few mins pretending to deliver to make sure i was not in and then swiped it"

According to your neighbour!

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:11

yes but the difference between 20 secs and 2 mins at my door doesn't prove he stole it, it's 'allowable' dithering i suppose!

  • it's more likely than not, but unless the depot catch him red handed with the cash it's a harsh and cold lesson learnt by me.
I hope he spends it wisely.

He then spent a few mins pretending to deliver to make sure i was not in and then swiped it

So he WAS actually seen swiping it? Well this is excellent! You've got a witness for the Police when they investigate.

ClosdesMouches · 14/12/2018 18:14
Hmm
Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:17

Yes of course you are right - all according to my neighbour, i don't have proof - i can only suspect.
I did not see anything, but as far as i know he was the only person to have entered my porch in that timeframe.
Going to drown my sorrows now - thanks for all your replies.

Laughing at these people who think it is odd

I bought a house in a small village. There was no front door key and no-one could remember there ever having been one (listed). Didn't need one as my door was covered by the neighbours all who knew exactly who came and went when.

LimitIsUp · 14/12/2018 18:19

Whilst I am sympathetic, if I was a wrong 'un I would look under a door mat / under a plant pot / on top of an external door frame and under a wheelie bin for a house key etc. I live in the countryside too - we still get crime (mostly outbuildings, garages and sheds)

GreenKangaroo · 14/12/2018 18:19

Call the police and report the crime. Ask DPD for the driver details. Report DPD to the company that your DH ordered from.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/12/2018 18:21

Fucking hell your neighbour is very precise isnt he. He knows exactly what the delivery man was doing exactly how long he was there for. Did he not guve you a full description of him and his registration number.

Snorkers · 14/12/2018 18:23

Aye so Police just texted me and said they won't be investigating further.

OP posts:
CaliHummers · 14/12/2018 18:25

Wealthy people have been known to steal too. It isn't uncommon.

Often enough it's how they got rich.

You can push with DPD but you have no direct proof it was their driver. I live rurally and I leave cheques out or do a bank transfer. People I have to pay regularly are fine with either of those.
